zachlipton.com: On the move

So I finally did what I've wanted to do for years and dump my cruddy web host for a real one. I also got the chance to do a big favor for a great guy who could use a hand and I didn't have to do anything I wasn't going to do anyway. It means that Jesse got cut out of the referral money, but what can you do? All this referral stuff creates all kinds of awkward situations.

In the spirit of the big move, this means that zachlipton.com is moving. Hopefully (which for those of you who know about my sysadmin skills, should really be read as "there is not a prayer in hell that"), I'll be able to acomplish the changeover without any outages. I have some pretty hackish scripts that will take some work to move over, including my mail processing rig which I really should package up and release since it's actually pretty useful.

Boring scratchpad notes to myself on how the transition should work are below. Everyone besides me: know that there may be some lost email and similar ungoodness, and please be patient.

zachlipton.com transition plan:

  1. Move subdomains from virt1f to scagnetti:
    • blog - redirect to weblogs.mozillazine.org/zach
    • devilsadvocate - staging area for a cgi script in development
    • gallery - currently redirect to 63.197.31.110/gallery, later to become host of gallery installation
    • chat - old summer project, to be removed
  2. Move main site content to scagnetti:
    • The following paths must not break as other sites expect them to work:
      • /cgi-bin/eachvote.cgi - petition page for eachvote.org
      • /cgi-bin/xanga.cgi - xanga rss feed to standards compliant rss feed conversion
      • email.png - image with my email address
      • /litmusmockups - mockups for Litmus
      • /resume - guess
    • By popular request, move over Planet UHS and setup accompanying cronjob
  3. Mail:
    • Create accounts:
      • zach@ - main mail account
      • all the various typo-catcher redirects
      • hiptop@ - already spam filtered with PopFile for my hiptop
    • Install my custom mailfilter package on scagnetti
    • Pipe all incoming mail on scagnetti to mailfilter.pl
    • Test setup
    • When working, redirect mail from virt1f to scagnetti
  4. Install nagios on zachlipton.com
  5. Move gallery from 63.197.31.110 to gallery.zachlipton.com
