Sudan

And now, for a short break from your regular Mozilla programming.

The situation in Sudan has become an emergency. Estimates of deaths range wildly, ranging from the tens of thousands. The New York Times reports that more than a million have been forced to move from their homes. Despite this, we continue to drag our heels. The situation receives little press coverage and only last week did the US Congress go so far as to call the horror that has occurred acts of genocide. It's about time.

Years ago, the world said never again. It's time for us to act, not just with worthless Security Council Resolutions, but with action.

I post this not out of the sense that I feel I can actually cause change through this post, but at least I may play some small part in raising public opinion, or at least lessoning public apathy. At a minimum, at least I can feel that I haven't completely turned my back.

Here in the UK, the crisis has been receiving the coverage it deserves. There was a high-profile appeal by Joanna Lumley, and it was the top news headline every day for about a week.
