Pogue on Firefox

In David Pogue's weekly email-only column, sent out through the New York Times, Pogue writes this week on our favorite browser and has nothing but great things to say. The column is email-only, so you have to be on the list to have gotten it, but I've reproduced the section on Firefox here. Read on...

Pogue's column appears below:

I'd heard so many people talking about Firefox, the new, free Web browser
(for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and other systems), that I had to try it. And
man, it is GREAT.

It's always driven me nutty that when you type "ebay" or "amazon" into the
address bar of Internet Explorer for Windows, it thinks you're SEARCHING for
that term instead of taking you to www.ebay.com or www.amazon.com, like any
intelligent browser (including Internet Explorer for Macintosh!).

Firefox does it the smart way.

It's also sort of incredible that it took until 2004 for Microsoft to add a
pop-up blocker to the world's most used Web browser (as part of the Windows
XP Service Pack 2 coming later this summer). Firefox, like other smart
browsers, has it already.

On Safari for the Mac, I've always loved the Google search box built right
into the title bar. Firefox has it, too — and you can change Firefox's to
search using other engines. (You can download a Google search bar for
Internet Explorer, but it's nice not to have to bother.)

If you want to give it a try — believe me, if you're using Internet Explorer
for Windows, you'll never look back — you can download it from
www.mozilla.org .
