Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 Released

Changelog for previous release (Thunderbird 2.0.0.12) | Changelogs for other Thunderbird releases

Released on 01 May 08, and this changelog was last updated on 04 May 08.

Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 has been released. Release notes are available. This post lists the improvements in Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 over 2.0.0.12. This list encompasses almost every single known fix that went into this release. Do check out the known issues as well.

The Gecko 1.8.1.x branch (Thunderbird 2.0.0.x series) will not include any groundbreaking features that Gecko 1.9 will bring, since it is based on Gecko 1.8. Additionally, in order to synchronize the version numbering with Firefox, 2.0.0.13 was dropped in favour of 2.0.0.14.

Impact key for security issues listed on the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisories webpage:

  • Critical: Vulnerability can be used to run attacker code and install software, requiring no user interaction beyond normal browsing.
  • High: Vulnerability can be used to gather sensitive data from sites in other windows or inject data or code into those sites, requiring no more than normal browsing actions.
  • Moderate: Vulnerabilities that would otherwise be High or Critical except they only work in uncommon non-default configurations or require the user to perform complicated and/or unlikely steps.
  • Low: Minor security vulnerabilities such as Denial of Service attacks, minor data leaks, or spoofs. (Undetectable spoofs of SSL indicia would have "High" impact because those are generally used to steal sensitive data intended for other sites.)

Changes in 2.0.0.14: (9)

Security issues: (2)

  • Fixed: MFSA 2008-14 - JavaScript privilege escalation and arbitrary code execution (Moderate)
  • Fixed: MFSA 2008-15 - Crashes with evidence of memory corruption (rv:1.8.1.13) (Moderate)

Crash: (1)

  • Fixed: 419035 - [1.8 branch only] "Random" crash when I want to display a mail

Attachment-related: (1)

  • Fixed: 411572 - Unnamed attachments reveal full local paths when forwarded inline or edited as new

Build configuration: (1)

  • Fixed: 416183 - add afrikaans to shipped-locales

Functionality: (3)

  • Fixed: 357172 - mail invitation text garbled (VCALENDAR not recognized as UTF-8)
  • Fixed: 415135 - Hang/lock-up on long From lines
  • Fixed: 419116 - Sending mail through SMTP server that doesn't require user:pass fails

RSS: (1)

  • Fixed: 375745 - Unsubscribing from feeds still shows in list until manager is closed

Hello,

I have a problem forwarding mail that has embedded pics/graphics to share with others. I looked through your help files on line and changed a setting that was suggested. It was to change to HTML rather than text. I forwarded another e-mail to someone who does and can receive HTML stuff, but he could not see the pics either. What can I do? Thanks for getting back to me as this is important. Alice

Hi Alice--I've overcome the problem by not forwarding the e-mail with pics etc; instead I "reply" to it; then change the address in the "to" window to the person I want

Hope this helps

My installation of 2.0.0.14 doesn't accept the button click from the account settings screen when I try to change the "Check for new messages" time... In fact, It won't accept it all, for ANY change .... It WAS for a while ...Any Ideas ? *** W2K SP-4 ***

Thanks !

Posted by: dave at May 3, 2008 12:28 PM

Also, I have it setup for two accounts, but the "Get all new messages" only checks the default account... I have to click each account separately when I want to check them both ... Am I doing something wrong ?

Thanks again, Dave

Re: my first post, that was the *OK* button click ...

Sorry, Dave

Posted by: dave at May 3, 2008 12:51 PM

lovely, not only did the automatic update not work but now tbird won't load at all and the new installer just gives a mozMapi error so I no longer have any tbird functionality.

Unable to send email using thunderbird. Netscape 7.2 works O.K. Have downloaded latest - no help.

Posted by: Ken Molly at May 4, 2008 12:59 PM

Now Thunderbird won't load. Just cycles through "Software Update Failed" endlessly. Thunderbird is "allowed" though Norton Internet Security 2007.

Posted by: Susan at May 4, 2008 8:31 PM

Update downloaded
The update was successfully downloaded and verified, and it will be installed the next time Thunderbird starts.
Restart Thunderbird now

One or more files could not be updated. Please make sure all other applications are closed and that`you have permission to modify files, and then restart Thunderbird to try again.

Above happens again and again until you click 'Cancel' in User Account Control.

The partial update could not be applied. Thunderbird will try again by downloading a complete Update

Download the complete Thunderbird
Install it; same happens as before

Posted by: Steve Hunter at May 5, 2008 4:19 AM

When I open the "email accounts" dialog, no matter what, clicking on the OK button does NOT make the dialog go away ... But after clicking the OK and then the CANCEL and then opening it again, some changes DO appear to have stuck ... Any Ideas ? Vers: 2.0.0.14, W2K SP-4.

PS. Is this the correct place to be posting these Issues? If not, Please direct me to where I should.

Thanks, Dave

What happened to "insert link?"

And why do my messages now get typed in plain monospaced text?

As soon as I opened up this latest release, it was missing features that have been around for a long time.

Why?

I have the same problem as Steve Hunter and Susan - it is very frustrating as the download keeps interupting thunderbird and then being unable to complete.
Is there a way of stopping the update from repeatedly downloading and attempting to be installed, until this problem is fixed?
Thanks

Posted by: Karen at May 6, 2008 5:05 AM

Exactly the same problem as Steve Hunter and co! "One or more files could not be updated. Please make sure all other applications are closed and that`you have permission to modify files, and then restart Thunderbird to try again." bla bla bla...all applications are closed, that can't be it. Don't suppose a complete re-installation would help, as it's a problem with the current version?

Frustrating.

First it, version 2.0.0.14, undated itself?? now it won't find or connect to the incoming or out going servers in the settings??, I did uninstall any earlier versions, then closed off the firewall and virus(kaspersky) still a no-go!

A second reinstall and along restart have not solved my problems. The steps on getting on the phone with the server providers where not the problem I am able to go online.

Your help is needed, my e-mail account for thunderbird is my business e-mail contact portal!!

yours,
Glenn Herious

I too have fallen victim to the update problem reported by Steve Hunter & others. The update repeatedly & continually fails, and it is therefore impossible to start Thunderbird! Is anyone going to helpfully reply to these messages?

Thanks!

Hi, I can“t attach pictures to Lotus Notes users beacuse the get them embedded in the mail, not attached.

Posted by: Leo at May 8, 2008 9:06 AM

I wnat to see the size to te attached files when i get mail with attachments. How can I do that?

Posted by: Leo at May 8, 2008 9:08 AM

I guess I should consider myself lucky because my update to 2.0.0.14 was smooth.

However, I was once again disappointed to see that two very annoying problems still haven't been fixed: the first is the bug that causes HTML email to open excruciatingly slowly unless the Address Book is open; and the second is the problem of TB being so painfully slow to open a new blank email to compose, or a reply to an email, when it's the first time to do so after launching TB (subsequent new blank emails and replies open quick as a lick).

These problems have been reported, and discussed, and discussed, and discussed, yet each revision comes along without their being fixed.

I realize that these problems are more annoyances than dysfunctions, but still I don't understand why they can't be fixed.

Thanks for listening.

With 2.0.0.14, I have a puzzling issue with filters. I create a new filter with 2 conditions, joined with "and". Desired action is to move the messages to a local folder. I save and hit the "run now" button. Nothing happens. I exit TB, run TB again, and the filter runs fine.

Although I have been trying to "teach" Thunderbird for over a year to send junk to the junk folder....it keeps letting through the same crap (viagra, all kinds of on line drugs and such) Am I doing something wrong. When I first downloaded it to my last computer...after a couple of weeks I was virtually spam free. Help!

Posted by: George at May 10, 2008 5:32 AM

I have 2 things problems with SETUP.
1) Software Update Failed: One or more files could not be update, please make sure all other applications are closed and that you have permission to modify files, and then restart Thunderbird to try again.
2) Mozilla Thunderbird Setup: Error opening files for writing C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\mozMapi32.dll clickRetry to try again, or Cancel to stop the installation. Everytimes when I install or Setup this programs and have fail and I can't figure it out with this problems and why??

Posted by: Robert Viau at May 12, 2008 1:24 AM

I updated yesterday.
The update seemed to work o.k., Thunderbird wanted to restart. Since then I do only see the spash screen. Thunderbird then fanishes. No error message, no nothing.
Any ideas how to get the thing up and running again?

Posted by: Joerg at May 13, 2008 6:00 PM

Had the same "Software Update Failed" error than some above. Downloaded the complete version from the website and installed over the existing. Now opens again fine.

Hi,
I have problems to send any attachment. In my send box the mail seems ok, but the addressee has some chaos as inline, but no attachments at all.

Do someone know this problem or has any idea? I tried two different email accounts. Both accounts show the same problem. Two months ago everything worked fine...
Up to now everything worked fine, no trouble with updating etc

I use Thunderbird on my office computer with no difficulty. However, I have downloaded it three times on my home computer, and with the same result: messages are superimposed on top of one another, in my inbox and in all other folders. How can I straighten this out?

Posted by: Brian at May 14, 2008 12:29 PM

To all who have issues with installing the update. The problem is with Thunderbird trying to delete the mozMapi32.dll What you need to do, is navigate to this directory. C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird Look for the file called mozMapi32.dll

Rename that file to something like mozMapi32.dll.bak (note you can't delete it, only rename it)

Then download the full release of Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 and install it. It will all work fine, and you won't lose anything.

Posted by: Paul at May 19, 2008 2:20 AM

First, I had a problem as many including Steve Hunter ("Partial update could not be applied", etc. Removed TBird, then reinstalled the full version 2.0.014 (20080421). All seemed to work fine until I started getting the warning like Mike - had the same problem..."One or more files could not be updated. Please make sure all other applications are closed and that`you have permission to modify files, and then restart Thunderbird to try again." Am running Vista 64bit and had the User Account Control (what was M.S. thinking with this?) turned off. Turned it back on and got the usual UAC permission prompt to the Admin. Acct. in all 3 other "limited" accts. The update was then applied. After this all seems to work fine - at least until the next update from TBird, then who knows? Will try the "mozMapi32.dll rename by Paul next time.

Posted by: Randy at May 19, 2008 7:04 AM

Tried Paul's suggestion but no luck. Update still fails in the same way as before.

For those having the mozmapi error, if you have a logitech webcam, try quitting the logitech tray application when updating. It seems that it locks the DLL, the problem is not thunderbird, but rather another application not playing nicely. Perhaps tbird developers can talk to the folks at logitech about this.

On Fri May 14, 2008 Brian mentions:" . . . on my home computer ... messages are superimposed on top of one another, in my inbox and in all other folders." I sympathize, when I tried to use TB the second time, after upgrading to version 2, this problem was so annoying I almost gave up on TB. All of the folder entries, the "To," "From," "Subject," "Size," "Sender," and "Date" fields are superimposed over and over, looking like a bad snapshot of a newspaper classifieds section, run off an old over-inked printing press, it hurts the eyes. The fix I found in the TB threads at Mozilla Forums was so easy, I could have cried, it was fixed in just seconds.

You need to go to your "Display Properties," the easiest way in Windows 2000 or XP is to go to your Desktop and 'Right-Click' your mouse, and 'Click' "Properties" in the context menu, or else go to >Start, >Control Panel, and then click on >Display Properties. Your Dispay Properties will have 4 or 5(or more) Tabs, depending on what extra display software (or hardware) you have installed, you want to click the very last Tab which says "Settings." Next click the button which says "Advanced." On the "General" Tab, you have three choices of what you wish for your Computer to do after you change your Display Settings, for this change I select "Apply the new display settings without restarting." Now I go to the Tab labeled "Troubleshoot." You will see a section labeled "Hardware acceleration" which includes a slider interface which can be moved with your mouse pointer. The far left setting will apply "None" Hardware Acceleration, and the far right setting will apply "Full" Hardware Acceleration. Because of limitations in the programming of TB 2, "Full" hardware acceleration will cause the Superimposed display on many installations. Simplay move the slider to the left one position, the text beneath the Slider Interface will change from "All accelerations are enabled. Use this setting if your computer has no problems. (Recommended)" to "Disable cursor and bitmap accelerations. Use this setting to correct problems with the mouse pointer, or to correct problems with corrupt images." On my computer, the box marked "Enable write combining" is still checked. At this point you should be ready to click "Apply" and then "Ok." If you opted to "apply changes now" earlier on the "General" tab, you should see your PC screen go dark for a few seconds, and then return to normal. Now when you view your Inbox and other TB folders, they should no longer have the annoying superimposed text. I applied this change in December 2007, and I have not noticed any differences in the appearance of my Windows graphical interface, or other software and graphics.

OK - solved. It was the logitech. Anyone having problems should check this (unloading the tray program)

I am unable to forward any emails inline. Instead I have to Forward as attachment or Reply which is a pain in the behind. When trying to Forward the message, I get a blank window. At first I thought the message was attached but once I sent it... there was no text attached.
I tested this on Windows XP as well as Linux Ubuntu 8.04. Any fix ideas ??

I am unable to get the latest version of Thunderbird to do word wrap on incoming mail, though when I hit reply it does word wrap. Any ideas?
