The Thunderbird folks are organizing a bug day this Thursday, 24 April 2008. The schedule is located here. Generally, feel free to pop by outside of the sessions as well, some experienced folks should be around to help you.

How?
Triaging is easy! You don't have to be able to understand computer languages in order to triage most bugs.
You just have to try and reproduce the bug by following the steps written in the report. Add a comment stating whether the bug still applies in the latest supported version of Thunderbird 2 (2.0.0.12), or in the trunk nightlies (3.0a1pre) for the more adventurous.

THERE'S A "BIG PROBLEM" WITH "THUNDERBIRD" VERSION (3.0A1PRE). WHEN I START "COMPOSING AN X-MAIL" IT'LL COME-UP WITH THIS "ADD-ON MESSAGE", THEN WHEN I CLICK IT, THEN THE "WHOLE THUNDERBIRD PROGRAM CRASHES". I'VE ALREADY *UPDATED* TO THE "LATEST BUILD NUMBER" THIS MORNING, BUT IT STILL DOESN'T WORK @ ALL. IT STARTED YESTERDAY.

YEAH, I'VE CHECKED-OUT THAT "BUG" AND IT'S NOT FIXED. IN-FACT, YESTERDAY I'VE TRIED DOWNGRADING BACK TO "THUNDERBIRD" (2.0.0.12) VERSION TOO AND SAME THING. MY "THUNDERBIRD" VERSION (3.0A1PRE) WAS WORKING TOTALLY AWESOME ON LAST SATURDAY, BUT SUNDAY ON THROUGH TODAY STILL DOESN'T WORK EVEN "TODAY'S LATEST BUILD". PLEASE FIX THIS SOON, THANKS.
