Released on 07 Nov 06, and this changelog was last updated on 09 Nov 06.

Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 has been released. Release notes are available. This post lists the improvements in Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 over 1.5.0.7. This list encompasses almost every single known fix that went into this release. Do check out the known issues as well.

The Gecko 1.8.0.x branch (Thunderbird 1.5.0.x series) will only bring stability and security bug fixes. As such, no new features will be added.

Impact key for security issues listed on the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisories webpage:

  • Critical: Vulnerability can be used to run attacker code and install software, requiring no user interaction beyond normal browsing.
  • High: Vulnerability can be used to gather sensitive data from sites in other windows or inject data or code into those sites, requiring no more than normal browsing actions.
  • Moderate: Vulnerabilities that would otherwise be High or Critical except they only work in uncommon non-default configurations or require the user to perform complicated and/or unlikely steps.
  • Low: Minor security vulnerabilities such as Denial of Service attacks, minor data leaks, or spoofs. (Undetectable spoofs of SSL indicia would have "High" impact because those are generally used to steal sensitive data intended for other sites.)

Changes in 1.5.0.8: (9)

Security issues: (3)

Crashes: (1)

  • Fixed: 323531 - crash when deleting all attachments after detaching all of them from one mail

Why don't you guys fix the space bar issue. Half the time when writing a new email, the cursur doesn't move when you hit the space bar, this is so annoying I am about to dump Thunderbird.

Posted by: James at November 8, 2006 12:32 PM

What is the point of listing all the Security issues fixed here as hyperlinks when they can't be viewed by the general public?

The big red "You are not authorized to access bug #xxxxxx. To see this bug, you must first log in to an account with the appropriate permissions." is not very inviting - even Microsoft doesn't do stuff like this.

Posted by: Allan Mondor at November 8, 2006 6:00 PM

They can be viewed after a certain amount of time has passed between releases. E.g., the security issue bugs can be viewed for Thunderbird 1.5.0.2 because enough time has passed since its release for people to upgrade their Thunderbird version.

This is also to prevent any hackers from exploiting the bugs while people take their time to upgrade Thunderbird. It's something similar to a quarantine period.

If James is correct that the problem with the space bar not working (especially following insertion of an emoticon) still isn't fixed, I'd be tempted to go back to Eudora until it is. It's infuriating beyond words when it happens.

Posted by: Bob Parker at November 8, 2006 6:23 PM

why not make a adaptive filter, so it can be possible to right click a spam mail into it...

Posted by: cesar at November 8, 2006 7:11 PM

Until I read these notes, I didn't even know a spacebar gripe existed.

Re: spam management, it's too easy for obvious spam to open during the process of sending it off to the junk folder. How about allowing the choice of "mark as junk" to include "move to junk" in the marking process? That is, marking a message as spam automatically sends the message to the junk folder.

Posted by: Rick Emerson at November 8, 2006 9:14 PM

There's already an option in the junk mail handling to move mail to the junk folder when you mark it as junk. Just tick the "junk" checkbox and it gets moved.

I actually want the opposite - if I UNMARK junk, I'd like it to move it back to the Inbox...

Posted by: Patrick Aikens at November 8, 2006 10:58 PM

Re:spam management, look in Tools>Junk Mail Controls for the option to move the spam to the junk folder when you mark it.

NONE of the links work:

356215 -- no security clearance... adressed above
CVE-2006-5462 -- emtpy
MFSA 2006-60 -- 404

Please at least fix the other two.

Posted by: Andy at November 8, 2006 11:12 PM

I'm VERY frustrated with the inability to use and still keep a column wrapped to fit the reply window. As a result, I rarely use and have been copying from the message I wish to reply to, to a reply that stays within the margins instead. It's extra work, takes too much time, and seems to be a problem unique to TBird. I've never seen this happen with another email program. Can't you fix this?

Posted by: Wendy Swope at November 9, 2006 12:04 AM

Andy:

356215 -- no security clearance... addressed above

CVE-2006-5462 -- pending review
-> see http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-5462. Same goes for CVE-2006-5463

MFSA 2006-60 -- Fixed

Thanks for pointing these out.

In answer to a previous post. I believe that if you change to a non-proportional font the "space" typed will show up instantly. Otherwise the program is trying to decide how much space should be placed between words. Anyway it works for me.

Hello
Why when reading newsgroup messages you don't have the possibiliy to display the size of the message?you can only display the numer of lines of the message...
This "size" option was availaible in early versions of thunderbird...it would be nice to have it back !
Thanks !

The spacebar gripe is very real. I know a lot of people don't notice it but I'm picky about proper typing and this bug forces me to carefully proofread before sending or look like a doofus to my literate friends.

It's especially galling when I brag to them about how cool Thunderbird is and they look at me like I have three heads (being all innocent MS-oids) and I try to tell them how much better TB is and then I have to explain that the clueless-looking double spacebars are because Thunderbird's not made by a company (which, they conclude, must mean it's amateurish).

Such a good product in most regards - this is a glaring silly oversight.

Posted by: Dave at November 9, 2006 2:59 AM

The space bar bug is intermittent on my PC and very frustrating when it happens.

It is like security by obscurity...not a good choice!

Posted by: at November 9, 2006 6:03 AM

Only certain "high-level" Mozilla.org developers have the security clearance to view them AFAIK.

Posted by: Kwong Gary at November 9, 2006 7:31 AM

I'm also frustrated with long-standing breakage not being addressed in Thunderbird. A lot of time has past since the last release and nothing much has changed. IMAP support is still a bit quirky and the overall UI is not as good as Outlook 2003.

Is Thunderbird stagnant from a feature development point of view?

Posted by: Gili at November 9, 2006 7:45 AM

YAY! The scrollbars are back! (OS 10.3.9)

Posted by: Kathy at November 9, 2006 7:49 AM

1. I have not had TB long enough to be an expert on its use, but one thing that happens which is most annoying is, when I am typing a message, especialy a longer one, and for some reason there is an interruption, and/or if I hit a certain key- I don't know which one - the message disappears never to be found, and I have to start over.
2. I often send file or picture attachments. Recently one such uploaded to 99% and stopped, with the erro message "timeout". I could send the same message on my dial-up e-mail which is very slow in comparison to this cable service, with no problem.
For now, that's all I can think of.

Posted by: Paul MacDougall at November 9, 2006 9:28 AM

I have noted that T-Bird seems to be leaking memory in a fairly big way. At first, I thought it was an add-on I just wrote (or maybe some other add-on). But if I just start T-Bird in safe mode, press cancel on the password dialog for my default account, and just let it sit there, the memory consumption reported by Windows goes from 22,144K to over 50K over the course of several hours. Is anyone working on this?

Posted by: David at November 9, 2006 10:14 AM

One annoying bug that is still in Thunderbird happens when someone sends an e-mail with several images (usally more than three, causing it to extend the list over two or more lines) attached inline.

There's no way of hiding the list of attachments, so I double click on the message to open it in a new window which should allow more space to view the images so I can decide which to save, but often this results in several extra blank lines appearing in the "attachments" box, meaning that the screen space available to view the images is much reduced.

IMO there should be an +/- option button to expand or contract the list of attachments as well as fixing the "extra lines" bug.

Posted by: Graham at November 9, 2006 10:15 AM

Yeah! Search is so much better now! Ahhh....

Posted by: Philip at November 9, 2006 11:06 AM

Setting a message to 'junk' status no longer moves it directly to my junkmail folder (this was working for me in 1.5.0.7). If I do something that causes a different message to move (such as drag a message to the trash) *then* the junk message disappears from my inbox.

This is quite annoying.

Posted by: adam at November 9, 2006 12:19 PM

the spacebar bug looks like this one:

Posted by: Kwong Gary at November 9, 2006 12:45 PM

I wish the email formatting problems would be fixed. It seems to me that 1/2 the time when I highlight a body of text and change the font, it doesn't actually change in my window. And many times the email that I compose looks fine before I sent it, but then when others receive it the formatting is junked (different lines with different fonts or font sizes, HTML formatting code showing through).

Drives me bonkers because I use TB at my buisness and it looks terrible to clients. When I send them an email that looks unprofessional.

Other strange things that have been happening occur when I forward a message with an attachment, the attachment gets renamed. All very frustrating.

Posted by: Benn at November 10, 2006 12:24 AM

Please sort out the issue with changing fonts. I set a default compose font, and it changes to variable width inexplicably.

Very annoying.

Thanks

Posted by: A member at November 10, 2006 12:30 AM

How do I make the default text size larger?

I would like to increase the default size and font for my readers who do not have perfect eyesight

Posted by: Gerald at November 10, 2006 1:41 AM

There still exist the bug that has been happening since 1.0.7 with the Address Book. If you do an advance search using the Organization field as the key, no records will show up even though the Organization fields are completely populated. Works in 1.0.6 with no issues.

Posted by: Doug at November 10, 2006 2:04 AM

Well, I think Thunderbird is an excellent product and apart from minor bugs like the last release's Password prompt - it's always worked flawlessly for me!

Great job guys and a great product

Posted by: GaryJones at November 10, 2006 2:38 AM

I still can't set the default font in the Options ... Html. It keeps returning to Variable Width.

When will this be fixed?

Posted by: Glen at November 10, 2006 4:37 AM

[Windows Version] For some time now (i.e. several releases) I always encounter an extremely long delay (30 plus seconds) with the first message I compose after launching the program. The composition window itself displays quickly, but there's a big pause right after I type the first few letters of the sender's nickname or email address. I tried turning autocomplete off but this didn't help. It also does not happen after the first message, so it sounds like some initialization problem. However this has become so annoying I feel no choice but to start looking around for another email client...

Posted by: Martin Miller at November 10, 2006 5:13 AM

i love this program.

one thing i would like fixed though, is that when i boot firefox it asks "do you want me to compact the folders" (my words.. i forget the specific words), then it tries to download new mail at the same time.. then it says "cannot download new mail as another function is running". pretty annoying.. i wish it would just compact folders without asking and maybe do it at a less critical point than when downloading new mail..

it's an awesome program tho

Posted by: james at November 10, 2006 7:15 AM

Good Product but I have seem to run into a problem. I have downloaded version 1.5.0.8. Since then when I write an email, in the message body I can not highlight any text with my mouse. That means that I can not do a cut a paste. This seems to be only affecting the message body. I can highlight in the subject field and the address field. This was not a problem before downloading the update. I am running windows 2k.

Thanks

I have been using Thunderbird for a while now and like it and I always get the latest updates but there do seem to be a few bugs and I'd like to see them fixed. The email formatting problem as previously mentioned is annoying and also when you unmark an item as junk it does not go to the inbox. Other problems include the junk mail filter being inaccurate. When I unmark an item as junk and I get emails from that sender again, it still goes to junk. Same with newsletters from Flixster - Thunderbird thinks its an email scam and does it every time even though I keep telling Thunderbird its okay. It doesnt seem to have a long memory for that. And sometimes it downloads the same message multiple times and also displays the wrong date for some messages and puts them out of order. Eg. an email that I know was sent to me today will say it was sent sometime earlier this year. Apart from these bugs, Thunderbird is good.

Posted by: Daniel at November 10, 2006 8:14 PM

How about opening email links in Firefox rather than IE?

Posted by: Zerodoll at November 11, 2006 2:10 AM

I *finally* found a solution to the "long delay on first email composition" problem described in my earlier comment. It is a known Thunderbird bug and to fix it [all] I had to do was delete over 5000 unnecessary lines in my Thunderbird profile's prefs.js file.

Details about this is are in the mozillaZine article titled "Long time to open address book" which is located here:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Long_time_to_open_address_book

Hope this helps someone else...now I don't have to switch to some other email program!
