Released on 21 Apr 06, and this changelog was last updated on 23 Apr 06.

Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.2 has been released. Release notes are available. This post lists the improvements in Thunderbird 1.5.0.2 over the previous release 1.5. This list encompasses almost every single known fix that went into this release. There has been some additional work to improve Thunderbird's performance on new Intel Macs as well, although there will not be a universal binary, scheduled for the next 1.5.0.3 release instead. In other words, there is no native support for users of Macintosh with Intel processors. Users may run Thunderbird 1.5.0.2 under Rosetta.

The Gecko 1.8.0.x branch (Thunderbird 1.5.0.x series) will only bring stability and security bug fixes. As such, no new features will be added. To synchronize the version numbering with Firefox, the 1.5.0.1 numbering was dropped in favour of 1.5.0.2.

Impact key for security issues listed on the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisories webpage:

  • Critical: Vulnerability can be used to run attacker code and install software, requiring no user interaction beyond normal browsing.
  • High: Vulnerability can be used to gather sensitive data from sites in other windows or inject data or code into those sites, requiring no more than normal browsing actions.
  • Moderate: Vulnerabilities that would otherwise be High or Critical except they only work in uncommon non-default configurations or require the user to perform complicated and/or unlikely steps.
  • Low: Minor security vulnerabilities such as Denial of Service attacks, minor data leaks, or spoofs. (Undetectable spoofs of SSL indicia would have "High" impact because those are generally used to steal sensitive data intended for other sites.)

What is the CVS checkout/release tag for 1.5.0.2?

Posted by: Chris at March 24, 2006 7:20 AM

TB 1.5.0.2 opens (sort of) only to give me a message saying it is already running and to remedy this I should quit TB or restart. I did both and I still get the same message. I am using a MacBook. I have tried two builds, one from March 29.

Posted by: Tom Vawter at March 31, 2006 9:00 AM

Maybe covered above but I hope the problem in 1.5 is corrected that will allow forwarding attached images.
At the present have to "save as new" before forwarding.

Thank you

With this version on my Windows XP system, messages deleted(sent to the trash folder) are permanently deleted when Firefox is closed even when set to retain.

When I start TB I get the message:
"Building Summary File for Inbox"
in the status line. While this message is displaying TB displays my mail folder structure but no messages are shown in the message window. This message displays whether or not there are any new messages to download. When there are no new messages it takes about 2 minutes before I can see any messages in the message list. When there are messages to download it displays for anything up to 6 minutes. (2Mb Broadband link).
Has anyone else seen this and does anyone know what it means and how I can speed things up?
Thanks.

When I start TB (Ver1.5.0.2) I always get the message that the connection to the mail server timed out.
I close the message, go to the settings and change the proxy-settings from "manual settings" to "automatic".
Then I click on the "check for new mail" button and all new messages are listed. But when I click on a message with integrated images (e.g. .jpg-s) they are not loaded.
I go back to the Proxy-settings and set them back to "manual setting". Now TB finds the proxy and loads the images AND FROM NOW ON the connection to the Mail-Server and the proxy is OK as long the TB-session lasts.
I am using IMAP and I have tested this on a a 64-bit Athlon and on an 32-bit-Athlon (all single core) systems.
What can this I do to corect this?

Found workaround solution to the comment/question above. I found out that TB tries to reach the mail server via proxy, but the servers are both inside our network. I added the mail server's adress to the excluded local IPs and URLs list on the proxy config pane and all works fine!!
In the old Netscape4.7-Messenger and in the Tunderbird 1.0.7 this was NOT necessary.

I had been happily using thunderbird in the previous version for a long time (several months), and yesterday while I was working with it, suddenly received the message that I should upgrade to the current version (1.502, I believe). The system then downloaded the upgrade and installed it, with a promised that it would start automatically when complete. However, this restart did not happen. Instead, I received the message that "a previous installation did not complete correctly, finishing instal" after which nothing happened. I tried uninstalling thunderbird and then reinstalling it from a fresh download, but this makes no difference. I still get this message. I am now unable to use thunderbird on my system, but I don't know why. Please advise.

Like Tom Vawter (March 31, 2006), after installing Thunderbird I got the message that another instance of Thunderbird was already running and that I needed to close it. Unlike Tom, I am running on Windows XP, not a MacBook.

I did fix the problem, however. I used the Mozilla Thunderbird Profile Manager to create a new profile and selected the new profile as the default one. Once this was done, all worked as it was supposed to.

I wonder if the fact that I had the old Mozilla Mail installed has something to do with this?

Can anybody tell me which files are in the update.mar archive???
or how tu unpack this file?? it´s very important for me!

Posted by: Sven at April 27, 2006 5:34 PM

I've noticed that since upgrading to latest version, POP3 behaviour has degraded.

When accessing Yahoo POP mail, a message is downloaded at each and every 'connection to sync' even if the message has been read/deleted from the thunderbird client.

Its almost as if it cannot remember the mails it has downloaded.

Is this experienced by anyone else?

Since upgrading to TB 1.5.0.2 on my MacOS X 10.4.6 system I have been unable to *send* mail. This has worked flawlessly for many releases. I have no problem with reading from the IMAP inbox using TB 1.5.0.2, just sending.

My SMTP configuration is authentication, SSL, port 465.

The symptoms are once I press send it says "Connecting to xx.tt.zz..." and never beyond that. The application remains responsive otherwise, it's just the compose window that is hung. I can still cancel if I want.

Posted by: John Fowler at April 30, 2006 2:32 AM

I have the same problem from Ricardo. When I send attach (xxx.doc) with a name with accents Ç~´`, he arrive in outlook with xxx.dat, or webmail xxx.html,
etc.
HELP!

Robin, it sounds like a problem you might have with your email folders, especially if they are sizeable:

Well, that was a thought. Thunderbird tells me there are 179 messages in my inbox but there are only 55 showing. The largest is 109kb and the majority are 10kb or smaller. I can delete from my inbox, but I cannot move or drag/drop individual emails to my local folders. I went to the webmail for my ISP and there are indeed 55 emails in my inbox. Any other ideas?

Posted by: Robin at May 6, 2006 1:17 PM

My love for Thunderbird is waning. After many attempts, I was able to drag an email to a local folder ... but in its place in the inbox appeared a completely empty "email" dated 12/31/1969 7:00pm.

I'm on a Windows XP box if that helps with any of this.

Thanks.

Posted by: Robin at May 6, 2006 1:26 PM

I'm having the same problem as Robin regarding the 'Building Summary File for Inbox'. My Inbox mail is stored locally, and it still takes several minutes to load, and gives an incorrect number of messages. The number increases and is not real - went form 1777 to 6853 in about 10 minutes. Also seems to be giving my harddrive a workout. I want to roll back to a previous version of TB, but no longer have the installation exe from the previous versions.

This only seems to be a problem for my Inbox. I moved all my messages into a backup folder, so Inbox is empty, but the 'Building Summary file....' message and several minutes of loading continues.

Having exactly the same problems with my inbox as Robin and Stacey described - - - am using Windows XP. Any suggestions for a cure?

Posted by: Richard Falknor at May 6, 2006 10:38 PM

This is weird, I have never seen such problems with Thunderbird, except synchronization hickups when using Saved Search Folders.

Are you all using a Global Inbox?

Go to Tools > Account Settings > [The Email Account]
Then, select Server Settings, and click the Advanced button.

Do all your email accounts use Global inbox? (This is just a shot in the dark, if you have already read and implemented suggesstions listed on:
http://www.freeemailtutorials.com/mozillaThunderbird/generalMaintenance.cwd

Robin, 179 is fine as far as quantity; Stacey, that's a lot of mail, but Thunderbird should be able to handle it. Try setting up the account with, say, Outlook Express. I know that this kind of problem sometimes arises when your mail provider doesn't provide accurate timestamps, so old emails are downloaded again.

Let me know how that goes

Posted by: Free Email Tutorials at May 6, 2006 11:16 PM

Robin, just saw your last post "in the inbox appeared a completely empty "email" dated 12/31/1969 7:00pm" - That could confirm the hypothesis with mail server's erroneous timestamps. Richard, what about your timestamps?

Posted by: Free Email Tutorials at May 6, 2006 11:18 PM

I, too, am getting some "1969" nonsense emails.

Posted by: Richard Falknor at May 6, 2006 11:53 PM

I have had the same problem as Robin et al describe maybe several weeks ago. Then I mistakenly thought it was too many messages in my in box - - - so I created a kind of holding file to place all incoming emails right after I saw them in the in box. I too had difficulty deleting or dragging incoming messages to the trash file. When the problem returned yesterday evening,I thought perhaps my drives needed defragging - - - that had given the appearance of working before. This time nothing seems to work. No incoming messgages are visible even though I can see them on webmail. Even the sent file with nothing apparently in it starts by "building a summary file." For some reason, there is no problem with my auxiliary Thunderbird (business) email inbox.

Posted by: Richard Falknor at May 7, 2006 12:03 AM

Well, this, again, is just a guess, but I wonder if it hasn't more to do with your mail server's timestamp - see if Outlook Express (or another email client) gives you the same kind of behavior - if it does, Thunderbird is in the clear, and your email provider, in trouble :)
