Welcome Clint Talbert - QA Development Engineer

Clint joined us starting May 1st. He will be creating automated regression test cases from bugs, creating automated functional test suites, and working on some test tools.

Here is a note from Clint:

I'm been involved with the Calendar project (Lightning and Sunbird) as both a developer and a qa engineer for almost a year. I am also a writer. I've written a few novels, but only one so far has garnered any interest. I'm currently revising it and working on several short story projects.

I'm from Austin and that town infused me with a passion for live music and art of all kinds. But, I grew up way out in the sticks, and ever since I was a kid, it's been nearly impossible to keep me indoors: I'm always itching to go hiking, running, surfing, climbing, biking, playing ultimate frisbee....you get the idea. ;-)

Here's my contact info:
IRC: ctalbert, usually hanging out in #qa, #calendar, and #calendar-qa.
Email: ctalbert@mozilla.com
AIM: rhlonekinshar (He's a character from one of my books, I was having a very uncreative day when I picked that).

Please join me in welcoming Clint!

Welcome Sam Sidler - QA Analysis Engineer

This is a belated welcome to Sam who started in Mid March. Sam (ss on IRC) comes from Treemo, Inc where he led the QA efforts testing phones and web browsers. He has also been and continues to be a contributor to the Camino Project. His roles there include: team coordinator, quality assurance, bug triage, website management, release planning, Marketing and Press Relations, and driving maintenance releases. Whew! His hobbies include volunteering for open source projects and... well... volunteering for open source projects.

Please join me in welcoming Sam!

QMO (quality.mozilla.org) ready for pre-alpha test drive...

QMO, or quality.mozilla.org, will soon be the new home for Mozilla QA. The site is still a work in progress, but it is now live and the community is welcome to create accounts and start using it. We want to give everyone a chance to test drive QMO and give us feedback as we continue to configure the site and add content.

To get started, please visit: http://quality.mozilla.org/qmo-pre-alpha-community-test-drive

For those interested in reading more about our planning so far and the goals for QMO, please visit: http://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla_QA_Community:QMO_Design

A few things to keep in mind:
1. The site is still in pre-alpha stage, so there is a lot of work to be done. We just want to give the community a chance to test the site and help us improve it through collaboration.
2. The current user interface and branding is temporary. We are working to create a unique identity for QMO and will be working with the Mozilla marketing team to develop a logo and improve the website design in the coming months.
3. The focus right now for the Mozilla QA team will be to build the Firefox testing community, but in the long term we hope other Mozilla projects will join us at QMO to represent their QA communities as well.
4. This Mozilla Quality blog will soon be "moving" to QMO, so new articles/posts will be written at http://quality.mozilla.org. The QMO RSS feed will be made available on Planet Mozilla in the near future.

Thank you for being a part of the Mozilla QA Community... we look forward to sharing our new home with you! :-)
- Jay & the Mozilla QA team

Beware of Talos

talos4.jpg
Image thanks to http://theseventhvoyage.com/
For quite some time I've been working to update the performance testing for Firefox. From this humble idea I've ended up with Talos - a python performance testing framework that is usable on both Windows and Linux. Built largely (very largely) from a framework created by Annie Sullivan it has been integrated with the new graph server (http://graphs.mozilla.org) and, thanks to Ben Hearsum, ported to Linux. The whole mess is now checked in. Find it on trunk at mozilla/testing/performance/talos.

So, why Talos? Talos is the bronze automaton of Greek myth. Talos protected the island of Crete, throwing giant boulders at unwary seamen. He's also purported to have heated himself glowing hot and then embraced his enemies. Basically, he was awesome. The new performance tests aren't quite so awesome just yet, but the name 'Talos' will give them something to live up to. I don't want to push the metaphor too far, while I could go on about throwing giant international pages at the build or lighting it on fire with rapid browser restarts, I also just thought that it was a pretty neat name for a project.

For future work these steps are taking top priority:

If you have any interest in helping feel free to check out the code. I'd especially appreciate anyone with insight into the strange world of the Mac to look into helping to create a Mac port.

Perhaps it is a little early to start living in fear of Talos, but don't say that I didn't warn you.

Firefox Community Test Day this Friday, May 4th

We have a great day of testing lined up for you this Friday. Please go to this page to see details about our testing event.

We are getting ever closer to our next security and stability release on the 2.0 branch, and we would love to have you join us and learn more about our testing efforts.

We are also in the process of putting together a Mac-specific testing list, in anticipation of the release of the Leopard OS in the fall. If you are interested in joining this Mac-specific testing list, please send email to marcia@mozilla.org.

Again, thanks to all those individuals that are helping us test. You are all helping to make Firefox and Thunderbird rock the Internet World!
