Community Test Day - Postponed for this week

Apologies for the late notice, but this Friday's community test day is postponed. The Mozilla QA team is busy with releases, and this didn't seem to be a good week to hold a test day since we are in between release cycles. We will resume next week with another test day - there will be information concerning this soon.

The QA team will be meeting on Monday to discuss an action plan for the Community Test Days going forward. We would love to hear feedback from other Community members regarding the test days, especially the following:

(1) Which days work best - are Fridays the best day?
(2) Do you think the test days are valuable? What kinds of things do you learn during your testing?
(3) Are the test cases in Litmus readily understandable for an average tester? If not, how could they be improved?

Any other feedback is welcome. Let us know how we can get you engaged and actively testing Firefox and Thunderbird. Thanks.

Attention Vista Thunderbird users - we have stuff to test!

To get this out more widely, here is some great news from mscott, our Thunderbird lead developer:

Hi Vista Testers,

We now have nightly *trunk* builds available that include Vista integration for Thunderbird. In particular, we now support making Thunderbird the default mail or the default news client in Vista.

If you would like to spend some time testing a trunk build, we'd appreciate the help and the feedback. You can get the bits here.

Here are some suggestions for testing:

* Setting as the default mail and/or the default news client from within Thunderbird (you should get prompted the first time you start up after you have an account)
* In Set Default Programs, you should see Thunderbird and Thunderbird (News) listed under Programs.
* Going through Set Default Programs, Thunderbird (News) registers the following urls: news, snews, and nntp urls. Thunderbird registers mailto urls and .eml documents.
* Save a message as a .eml file. Try opening that file from Vista, it should open a stand alone message window in Thunderbird.
* Try registering for individual protocols.
* Test MAPI. Right click on a file, choose Send To / Mail Recipients. this should open a Thunderbird compose window if Thunderbird is the default application.
* Test uninstalling the app.

We hope to have Thunderbird 2 based branch builds available with these same changes in the next couple of days.

Thanks!

-Team Thunderbird

P.S. On Windows XP, thunderbird also lets you register as the default feed url handler for RSS feeds. We haven't figured out what to do in Vista yet, so that doesn't work.

Firefox 2.0.0.2 RC4 candidate available for testing

We had to spin again to pick up a few more fixes. Here are links for the current RC4 candidate:

Linux and Mac
Windows (unsigned builds)

The Windows signed builds should be out shortly, so please feel free to check back in the RC4 directory if you want to test the signed features of the Windows build.

Things to hammer on on this build:

1. Windows Vista users should emphasize testing all things relating to default browser settings. With Firefox set as default, make sure external applications honor that preference, as well as launch URL shortcuts from the desktop and searching from Start|Search. Try switching back to IE, and then back to Firefox. Try all protocols: http, https, ftp and gopher.
2. Test out Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, Gmail, etc, as well as financial and banking sites.
3. Install the 10 most popular extensions on Add-ons.
4. Give password manager a good workout.

Please feel free to report significant findings to this blog, or file a bug in Bugzilla if you have an account.

Candidate builds for Firefox 2.0.0.2/1.5.0.10 now available for testing

Candidate builds are now available for testing, and links can be found below. Our test day page has some information about what to test if you want to do some focused testing. We are particularly interested in getting some additional testing on Windows Vista, since there are fixes in the 2.0.0.2 build that will handle many of the OS integration issues, including the preference to make Firefox your default browser.

Please post significant issues to this blog, or file a bug in Bugzilla if you have an account (check first to make sure a bug has not already been filed). Remember to include which extensions you have installed, since they can sometimes cause issues.
