Organizing the QA wiki and QMO (quality.mozilla.org)
To wiki or not to wiki... that is the question that I've been asking myself for the past few weeks. For the mozilla project, http://wiki.mozilla.org has become a central place for everything from project planning docs to QA community task tracking. There is A LOT of information there.
The problem with wikis is that pages can sometimes grow out of control, get lost in a maze of links, or orphaned all together if not linked from some central "portal". So although all the information you might need for any given task is "in there somewhere", it's not always easy to find.
For example, the QA team and our community now has 3 main "portals" that we probably use on a daily basis:
1. Mozilla QA Community (http://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla_QA_Community) - main public interface for all community based efforts (including test days, bug days, etc)
2. General QA Wiki (http://wiki.mozilla.org/MozillaQualityAssurance:Home_Page) - We should use this for everything related to general QA and team based projects, tasks, etc. This page and the Mozilla QA Community page together should make up most of the long term content we want to preserve and build on for QMO.
3. Firefox Project (http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox) - main release tracking page for all Firefox/Thunderbird releases.
The problem is, most of us never know which one to go to for information like Talkback build ids or l10n test results for some 1.5.0.x release. It's "in there somewhere", but good luck finding it quickly.
That is why we have started planning for QMO (quality.mozilla.org). We hope that it will soon bring order to the chaos that currenty is the Mozilla QA wiki docs. It's still in the early design stages, but I wanted to ask the community for any suggestions and ideas for things like:
1. What sections would you expect to see on the front page of QMO?
2. Which documents on http://wiki.mozilla.org or the old http://www.mozilla.org website do you think should be updated and included as a part of QMO?
3. How do you see a central mozilla quality portal helping the QA team and community?
4. How can we use QMO to bring more users into our community to help contribute to the mozilla project?
Please leave your comments here and we will be sure to think about them in making our QMO design decisions. I have setup http://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla_QA_Community:QMO_Design for tracking our progress. Thanks for reading... and don't forget to scroll down for our upcoming Bug and Test Days! :-)

Comments
- On the front page I'd expect to see, broadly speaking: What the QA team's focus is at the moment (ie: what are we doing now?) and the upcoming schedule (ie: what are we doing soon?) as well as current status of any going concern (ie: Litmus/BFT/smoketest results); How I can get involved or help; Links to long term projects, tools, meeting notes, schedules, etc.
- No real strong feelings here, mostly due to unfamiliarity with those sites
- There's a lot going on in Mozilla, and it can be hard to tell where the focus should be and where help is most needed.
- Guides, how-tos, walkthoughs and indications of how a little bit of time every day from people from all backgrounds can go a long way towards helping.

Some work is already being done on cleaning up/combining/updating the existing triage documents ("mozilla.org Archives" on the planning doc) in the form of MozillaQualityAssurance:Triage (see bug 343653 for more info).
When all is said and done, the new triage guide probably needs to be 3-4 pages, one for each major "chunk" of the process, but otherwise unified and updated for 2006...
