Firefox/Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 candidate builds and Community Test Day (Friday, September 1st)

We now have candidate builds for Firefox and Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 and need your help testing them! Always test the builds in the latest "rc" directory... ;-)
Firefox: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/1.5.0.7-candidates/ (RC3 available now!)
Thunderbird: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/1.5.0.7-candidates/ (coming soon...but you can always test the nightly "-mozilla1.8.0" builds from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/)

You can get an early start testing them now...and leave your feedback, issues, bugs filed, etc in the comments. Or you can join us for the upcoming 1.5.0.7 Community Test Day this Friday, September 1st. For more info visit the 1.5.0.7 Community Test Day page.

As always, these security releases are what make Firefox and Thunderbird great products! Our work together helps to keep our users up to date and safe... so any help testing these builds is much appreciated! For more info about this upcoming release, please visit the 1.5.0.7 Release page.

Thanks!
The Mozilla QA Team

Here is a good article about Community Test Day - http://software.newsforge.com/software/06/08/17/2017247.shtml?tid=130&tid=138

And just a reminder, we do have a Bon Echo Community Test Day planned for this Friday. There will be lots to test since Beta2 is right around the corner. Please join us on Friday.

A New Fun Smoketest in our Litmus test suite!

I have been thinking about creating a few tests that are bit more fun, but still help us cut a wide swath in trying to mimic the common operations that users do when they are browsing the web. So I scripted out a few test cases and created a run called : 2.0 Surf's Up - A Fun Smoketest!. This is intended to be a quick smoketest that should only take about 10 minutes of your time, but will help us test some of the common operations users are doing when they are on the Internet, including things like checking their mail, downloading files, etc.

You can find this test run in our Litmus Test tool. Please give the 10 or so test cases a spin, and let me know what you think. If we get good feedback, I will add some additional test cases in this style. I would also be interested in feedback regarding if users think this is a good entry level smoketest for testers that don't want to get deep into testing, but would rather contribute by doing a brief run where they can have some fun and at the same time help the Mozilla project.

Need Community Members to Help with writing Plug In test cases

Tracy posted in #qa about this the other day, but didn't get any response, so I am putting it out there to a wider audience. We would like some help putting together a better set of test cases for Plugins. This would include test cases which give the high visibility plugsins a workout: Adobe, Quicktime, Flash, RealPlayer, etc. If you some technical expertise with how plugins interact with Firefox, that is even better.

If you are interested in helping out with this effort or have some ideas, please shoot an email to marcia@mozilla.org. Thanks.

What do I test? 1.5.0.x branch, or Bon Echo?

I see people testing and submitting Litmus results for the 1.5 branch. Right now, we are in the early stages of Firefox 1.5.0.7 development, so we don't need as much help testing that branch right now (we will let you know when we do, and at that time we would sure appreciate your help!). In the meantime, we probably get the most bang for our buck if you are running tests on the current Bon Echo nightly builds, which are located here: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla1.8.

We recently landed some visual refresh changes, and there is a tracking bug which is tracking all of the changes/fallout as a result of that landing. Here is that bug - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=347454. Please check that bug before filing any new bugs regarding the visual theme refresh.

Just a reminder: Another test day rapidly approaches - this Friday we will be testing tabbed browsing. Please join us on IRC or on AIM for a great day of testing. Link to the testing page: http://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla_QA_Community:BonEcho_Community_Test_Day

Organizing the QA wiki and QMO (quality.mozilla.org)

To wiki or not to wiki... that is the question that I've been asking myself for the past few weeks. For the mozilla project, http://wiki.mozilla.org has become a central place for everything from project planning docs to QA community task tracking. There is A LOT of information there.

The problem with wikis is that pages can sometimes grow out of control, get lost in a maze of links, or orphaned all together if not linked from some central "portal". So although all the information you might need for any given task is "in there somewhere", it's not always easy to find.

For example, the QA team and our community now has 3 main "portals" that we probably use on a daily basis:

1. Mozilla QA Community (http://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla_QA_Community) - main public interface for all community based efforts (including test days, bug days, etc)

2. General QA Wiki (http://wiki.mozilla.org/MozillaQualityAssurance:Home_Page) - We should use this for everything related to general QA and team based projects, tasks, etc. This page and the Mozilla QA Community page together should make up most of the long term content we want to preserve and build on for QMO.

3. Firefox Project (http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox) - main release tracking page for all Firefox/Thunderbird releases.

The problem is, most of us never know which one to go to for information like Talkback build ids or l10n test results for some 1.5.0.x release. It's "in there somewhere", but good luck finding it quickly.

That is why we have started planning for QMO (quality.mozilla.org). We hope that it will soon bring order to the chaos that currenty is the Mozilla QA wiki docs. It's still in the early design stages, but I wanted to ask the community for any suggestions and ideas for things like:

1. What sections would you expect to see on the front page of QMO?
2. Which documents on http://wiki.mozilla.org or the old http://www.mozilla.org website do you think should be updated and included as a part of QMO?
3. How do you see a central mozilla quality portal helping the QA team and community?
4. How can we use QMO to bring more users into our community to help contribute to the mozilla project?

Please leave your comments here and we will be sure to think about them in making our QMO design decisions. I have setup http://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla_QA_Community:QMO_Design for tracking our progress. Thanks for reading... and don't forget to scroll down for our upcoming Bug and Test Days! :-)

Bon Echo Community Test Day - Friday August 11th

Our next scheduled test day will be Friday, August 11th from 7am - 5pm PDT. The target area for this test day will be Tabbed Browsing. There will be opportunities to test using test cases in our Litmus test tool or do some exploratory testing on your own.

We will once again offer community members the option to join via AIM/Instant Messenger, and we will try that again since some people don't like to use IRC. More information about AIM and IRC channels is contained in the Test Day document below.

Results from our last test day

Sorry I didn't get around to posting this sooner, but we have now posted the results of our last test day here: http://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla_QA_Community:BonEcho_2.0b1_Community_Test_Day

We had some new testers join us for test day, and some good banter in the channel, as well as new bugs that got filed.

Please join us for the next Community Test Day, which is tentatively scheduled for August 11th. More to follow soon, but we will likely focus on Tabbed Browsing during this testing event.
