Printing Bugs in Firefox

With focus on so many other cool features in Firefox 1.5, some of the basic features get little love these days. So, I think it's about time to take a closer look at printing. That's right, printing! We all know there is plenty of content on the web that needs to be preserved on good ol' paper...so printing is often a very important feature that gets overlooked. Everyone has probably had trouble printing a web page, news article, blog post, image or forum thread at one point. I know I have... so it'll be nice to see a few critical bugs get fixed in the next release.

A quick query in Bugzilla for recent Printing related bugs returns plenty of open ones. Here are a couple queries (for bugs changed since 10/06/2005):

The problem is, it's hard to figure out which ones are the most important. So here is how you can help:

Dig through Bugzilla for recent (or even old) printing bugs. You can stick to my queries above or find your own bugs.
Identify bugs that meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Printing problems related to the top 100 websites (you can go by the Alexa Global Rankings)
- Data loss printing issues (not being able to print all the content on a page, only having a page or two printed when there should be a lot more, or other similar bugs that don't give you what you expect when printing something)
- Regressions from Firefox 1.0.x -> 1.5.x
- Any critical bug that you can convince developers to fix for the next release to improve the user experience with Firefox. This is very subjective, but if millions of users are going to be affected by a bug, we should put it on the radar.
Narrow down the cause of the problem the best you can so that the developer has a better chance at debugging it. Basically, find testcases in the bugs or develop your own simplified testcase that can be easily reproduced.
Test with the latest versions of Firefox 1.0.x, Firefox 1.5.x, and the nightly Trunk builds. Figure out if it's a bug across all releases or if it's a recent regression.
Post your testing results and comments in the relevant bug and leave a comment here at the blog with a link to the bug.

Keep in mind that although a few people may want a bug fixed, it doesn't mean there will be anyone around to fix it. BUT, if you can pull together enough support and plead your case by doing the research, submitting a testcase (or even a patch), and showing others how to reproduce... you will have a better chance at seeing some traction on your bug.

A few tips:

To save trees, you can always just use Print Preview to see what the printing results will look like. From the testing I have done so far, I have realized that what you see in the Print Preview is what you will end up seeing on paper. So most of the bugs that you will find will be exposed in Print Preview...
Print Preview and Page Setup are closely related, so make sure you check all the settings found in both places to make sure what you are seeing is indeed a bug (or not).
Try to test websites that you feel a lot of people will be printing from...like those I mentioned earlier: news, blogs, forums, images/photos, etc.

There's already a testcase and proposed patch for 154892 and not much I can personally do about it, but it does meet the following criteria:

# Data loss printing issues

..and may meet #1, seeing as it affects a wide variety of sites.

I have tested it personally using 1.5 final on:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5

Windows users can take advantage of PDF Creator:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

Mac users have pdf creation built into the print functionality.

Just print to pdf, if they want to ensure that the followthrough matches the preview.

IME even print preview doesn't work well many times. What you see in preview is not what gets printed, so sometimes print preview is absolutely useless.

The one that has seriously annoyed me many times is bug 282434: route lines on google maps don't print. This seems to meet the "top 100" and "data loss" criteria. It isn't a regression though -- it has never worked.

There's one major problem in all this -- the printing code is essentially unowned... Makes it hard to get bugs in it fixed.

I just installed foxfire 1.5 (window XP system) and when I highlight (select) text on an internet page and print selection, there is an error message and the browser closes.

This is a big issue since release of 1.5 where printing selected areas result in black images being printed. Was fixed on trunk, never made it to branch in time:

Firefox doesn't follow standard Windows default printer behaviour (e.g. Bugs 320992 and 315817 which look pretty similar to each other).

Try printing the Firefox Homepage. See how it comes out. We should have a "Live" Printing Feature. Which prints the page out exactly how Firefox renders it. And cam crop or scale it down to the right size.

What are your ideas on this?

The first comment regarded bug 154892, which has the following keywords: dataloss, helpwanted, testcase, top100, topembed+.

In bug comment 111 roc nails the current status: I definitely want to get this done for 1.9, but it'll have to wait for the reflow branch to land. (I'd like to do this in conjunction with refactoring absolute positioning so any frame can be an abs-pos container.).

Here's a strange printing problem (among several) I just had with Firefox 1.5.0.4 ... I had produced
some HTML files for some C++ code with Doxygen and
was printing them off for proofreading when I noticed that some of the class descriptions were
in a much smaller font than others. They were all
printed in the same browser session. I printed the
same documents immediately afterward using IE 6 and
they came out fine ...

YES! Its 'vsmon' that caused the problem for me!

Firefox stopped finding any websites after it automatically updated, so I found the answer on this page just now!

Even though zone alarm wasnt running, vsmon was in ctrl-alt-del list, I couldnt close it, so I just opened zone alarm, and it said firefox is trying to access the net....I click ok and bingo, I have firefox back with all my settings without a tiresome uninstall and loss of info.

As stated previously Weblocal there is a no problem with the auto update from Beta 2. However, it doesn't state there was a problem and behaves as if its updated. When you check the About dialog and on the titlebar it still claims to be Beta 2.

CORE FF BUG

This has been a FF bug for an extremely long time that is annoying as hell (1.0 - 2.0). When I click print from a print preview window, all of my FF browsing history gets deleted. This means that I can't use the back arrow to goto the page I was coming from.
