CPU usage while using Thunderbird RC2

I am running Thunderbird RC2 on my Mac, and noticed that it seems to be running high on the CPU side. If Thunderbird users out there can monitor their CPU usage, real memory and virtual memory and report back in this blog, it would be helpful. So the data we need is as follows:

(1) CPU usage while you are running Thunderbird RC2.
(2) Real Memory usage while you are running Thunderbird RC2
(3) Virtual Memory usage while you are running Thunderbird RC2
(4) Whether or not you shut down Thunderbird RC2 when you finish using it (I don't, I actually just put my machine to sleep)
(5) Main extensions that you use in Thunderbird

I am using the en-US RC2 candidate build which can be found here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/1.5rc2-candidates/.
As far as extensions, I do have FoxClocks and Display Mail User Agent running on this profile.

If you use the Mac, there is a utility called "Activity Monitor" that will provide all of this information.

Comments

1) between 1% and 25% of CPU (2GHZ Intel Pentium M)
2) between 24MB and 34MB
3) pretty steady at 24MB
4) I shut Thunderbird down on occasion when I am really taxing my system.
5) I have junk mail filtering turned on and I use 3 IMAPS accounts that check mail every 10 minutes. I haven't installed any extra extensions yet - just talkback. MailRedirect is installed but disabled due to the maxversion string. I don't use it enough to fix that...

5. mozPod at times, that's about it. Not on right now.

I do have a giant trash, which may be the culprit of my astronomical memory consumption. Though I do have 1.5GB of RAM, so I don't care /to/ much.

With RC1:

1. Typically around 1%, can go up to 30-60% for a short time when checking mail and especially blogs. From time to time (about once a day) the whole applications hangs when downloading mails, this takes ~20 seconds then. No idea why it happens. 1.5GHz Pentium M
2. 54652 kB - seems to be pretty stable
3. 44428 kB
4. I shut it down occasionally but usually it is running all the time.

Thunderbird doesn't like dual core chips. I have a laptop with an Intel dual core cpu, and a desktop with an AMD dual core cpu. On both machines Thunderbird runs fine for a while, but then it starts hogging one core (maxes out the cpu on one core). I have to kill Thunderbird and restart it in order to get the cpu usage back down. I never had this problem until I started using IMap instead of POP.

It is annoying to the point that, after using Thunderbird exclusively for a long time, I am looking for a more reliable IMap email client.

This is not for RC2, but for released version 1.5 (20051201). This occurs on multiple PowerBooks (17" 1.5GHz 1GB G4, 15" 1.25GHz 512MB G4), and as I don't use desktops for mail, I haven't yet ruled them out of having similar problems.

There is only one email account setup in Thunderbird. It is a secure IMAP connection using port 993, SSL, 10 minute new mail checks, with all folders set for offline viewing.

1) At some point during the day (often multiple times per day) it will peg the CPU to 90-100% usage, indefinitely, heating the PowerBooks to the point of fan
2) Between 20MB and 40MB
3) Around 200MB
4) Generally, I leave Thunderbird running on the 15" hidden, at all times, even when the machines are put to sleep. The 17" PowerBook has Thunderbird closed at night, open during business hours. I've noticed that if Thunderbird is in its pegged state at the time I leave the machine idle (without explicitly Apple -> Sleeping) it seems to keep it from sleeping on its own
5) No extensions added.

My only solution has been to Cmd-Q and restart it after hearing the external fan kick on and checking Activity Monitor for the reason.

Same problem as above. I use IMAP but only use a single core processor and several times daily tbird eats 100% of my cpu until I shut it down/restart.

1) 0% typically on a P4 3.2GHz
2) 24-27 megs
3) ?
4) restart daily... many times...
5) No extensions

Solution? I too am about fed up w/ it. :/

I might be off target here, since I am no Mac-user at all, but I have recently started seeing problems with my Thunderbird too.

Suddenly, for no apparent reason, CPU-usage jumps to 100%, and remains there, heating up my otherwise cool AMD-based HP Pavilion laptop.

The only solution I have found is to simply close Thunderbird, and open it again.

I'm using the latest version (version 1.5.0.2 (20060308)) and have not had this problem until recently.

(1) 1-3%, then suddenly jumps and remains at 99%.
(2) Thunderbird uses about 25 MB of memory.
(3) ?
(4) I always close it down now, knowing my laptop will be drained of power if the CPU hangs.
(5) None.

Since many people experience the same problems here, it makes sense to think this has nothing to do with Mac / PC / Other OS's, but a problem with Thunderbird itself. And hopefully, in a coming version, they will have it fixed. I'm never returning to Outlook, regardless.

We're also seeing this on two computers here. Several times a day, Thunderbird (1.5.0.2) jumps to 99% CPU and stays there until it's closed and opened again.

If using the computer for something CPU intensive you soon notice but otherwise it's the noise of fans kicking in!

Affected computers are running Windows XP, both are Athlon 64's, one is a desktop (Shuttle) and other is a laptop (Acer).

Although we were using IMAP before this started, we recently switched to using SSL IMAP on a different server which is when this problem began. To me that suggests either a problem with SSL IMAP in Thunderbird, or perhaps an issue between Thunderbird and certain IMAP servers?

Hi:

I am using the latest stable image of Thunderbird 1.5.0.5. I am using it as a RSS reader, with about 30 subs and find that my Windows Task Manager shows it using over 200MB of memory. When Thunderbird starts running, under the performance tab in the Windows Task Manager, I can see the available physical memory just disappear and the performance of the system (1500 Mhz Pentium M laptop, 512MB RAM, Windows XP SP2) does to the floor.

There was a bug report suggesting that this problem was fixed, but right now Thunderbird is borderline unusable for me due to what it does to the rest of the system.

Is there any help for this problem?

On shutting down thunderbird - everytime I experience 100% CPU approx 4-5 minutes.

The screen and windows tab dissappears, but when looking at the task manager its running still at 100%

Virtual memory decreases fractionally .

I have filters (approx 30) setup, 4 RSS feeds and ageing on some of the folders.

Upon starting thunderbird - it immediately consumes 90MG of memory and through the day I can see it increase to 150-200MB

Im using Thunderbird v1.5.0.7 (20060909)

HAving noticed machine slowing down, found that Thunderbird id consistently using 90+%. Even if shut down and restarted, it does this. Have begun to run it to collect mail and then shutdown, till later in day. Am using Athlon 64 and WinXP

99% CPU most of the time. I have to periodically restart TB. I use IMAPS. After restart TB uses 1-2% for 20-30 minutes then goes to hell again.

I have same CPU issues on a Core 2 E6600 CPU. I am also using IMAP over SSL. And ESMTP over SSL. The only reason I notice it is the CPU temps show higher in motherboard monitor. This bug has brought to the developers attention for almost a year now I see... I think it's time to look for a new client.

Same problem here now... Suddenly startet appearing at my work place. 4-5 computers (all PC's) does this. Both with 1.5 and 2.x versions of TB. CPU peak at 90-100% - restart is needed to fix this. Happens 5-10 times a day.
It doesn't happen from my home PC where I use the same mail server. I'm NOT using SSL fomr home, I see someone mentioned this could be the cause. I will try to switch off the 'SSL' option at my work computer to see if this changes anything.
It's not related to the OS and it's not related to the server.

my windows xp home machine, sp2, amd athlon 2600xp, 1GB DDR-333 ram... both firefox/thunderbird start at reasonable ram/virtual memory/page file usage ~30-40MB, but after a few days/weeks - it creeps up to ~200MB mark! firefox drops/rises depending on the webpages/tabs viewed, but thunderbird stays constant - when composing email messages the text is delayed on screen, seems to run sluggish - at this stage not using 100% CPU. which firefox used to do when resuming from standby.. i am running the latest versions of both 1.5.0.7

Using Thunderbird V. 1.5.0.8 (20061025).
I have multiple IMAP accounts, all accessed via SSL (port 993).
Thunderbird unconditionally uses up between 90% and 100% CPU time after some 10 minutes of running, so I have to restart it every 15 minutes or so.

Also quite often it complains about not being able to access the IMAP server, because too many connections are open, even if I restrict every account to 1 connection. I smell a connection between these two issues.

I've also using SSL IMAP with the latest Thunderbird on Windows XP and frequently run into the 100% CPU usage problem mentioned by others :-(

YES! Its 'vsmon' that caused the problem for me!

Firefox stopped finding any websites after it automatically updated, so I found the answer on this page just now!

Even though zone alarm wasnt running, vsmon was in ctrl-alt-del list, I couldnt close it, so I just opened zone alarm, and it said firefox is trying to access the net....I click ok and bingo, I have firefox back with all my settings without a tiresome uninstall and loss of info.

Note that in some cases the authors might not have gotten around to making their extension compatible, so we don't need bugs filed on all of these items. We would just like you to test and provide feedback as to whether the extension is working properly and whether it is compatible

Same problem reported by others. I'm using SSL IMAP, Win XP, latest Thunderbird version. CPU usage goes to 99% very often. It seems to be happening in a consistent manner after an e-mail search, even if the search is reported to be completed. Too bad, I think this is the best mail program out there.

Same deal. WinXP, TB 2 beta 1, 1.73GHz Pentium M with 2 GB ram, two IMAP accounts, one of which uses SSL, one of which doesn't. Occasionally TB jumps up to 100% cpu use and just sits there for an indefinite period. Frustrating indeed.

Gentoo Linux, Celeron M 1.6G, Xorg 7.2, XFCE, Beryl, source Thunderbird 2.0beta1 package, 2 IMAPS accounts (one of which checks about 7 folders for new mail)

(1) CPU usage between 2-3% and 100% (it appears to do high CPU usage when checking for new mail)
(2) starts with around 40m, reaches 80-120M
(3) starts with around 150M, reaches 250M or more
(4) I only turn it off when restarting X/the laptop, or when it decides to use 100% of my CPU for hours and I have better things to do with that computing power; usually I suspend to ram, so the uptime goes easily to weeks/months
(5) usually none, occasionally I enable Lightning (some people consider fit to send me ical attachments rather than normal sane text emails)

Main account is IMAP, non-SSL.

I too get the occasional "too many connections" dialog box.

Same with my machines:

MacBook Pro (core duo) (Os X 10.4.9): T-Bird likes to use 100 % of both cores after a while.

AMD XP 2000+ (Linux 2.6.15-28-386)

Both T-Bird Version 1.5.0.10

I checked off receiving mails automatically on both machines. I'm using multiple accounts, most of them Imap, two of them SSL.

On both machines the Soft behaves ordinarily for about half an hour up to one and a half. Afterwards it increases processor usage to 96-100 % and remains although no network connection is active. The state doesn't change if switch the soft offline.

As stated previously Weblocal there is a no problem with the auto update from Beta 2. However, it doesn't state there was a problem and behaves as if its updated. When you check the About dialog and on the titlebar it still claims to be Beta 2.
