Firefox 1.5 Release Candidate 1 is live
You can download the RC1 candidate here.
Feel free to report any significant issues you see to this blog. Please don't repeat issues that were previously posted when we put out the candidate builds.
Important Notes:
(1) Make sure to mention what platform you are seeing the issue on.
(2) If you crash please include your talkback ID.
(3) Use the reporter tool to report issues with broken websites. It would nice to roll into 1.5 and have some of the outstanding issues resolved if possible.
Thanks!

What channel do we have to be on to software update to this RC?
Posted by: Simplex at November 1, 2005 5:53 PM
When updating Firefox, and the update fails for some reason, a browser window is displayed above the window notifying that the partial update failed, and that a full update will be performed instead. This is on a Mac running Mac OS X 10.4.3 and updating from 1.5b2 to 1.5 RC1.
Posted by: Dan V. P. Christiansen at November 1, 2005 6:12 PM
I'd Fx1.5b1 installed when I clicked Help->Check For Updates to get the Beta 2 patch, which didn't work and Firefox had to download the whole file, which updated my Fx to Beta 2. Today, it notified me that the 1.5 patch had been downloaded. After shutting down the browser, it said that the patch didn't work and it had to download the whole thing again. I now have a 10/25 build, which I assume is RC1, and am looking forward to the day when I can actually use a patch.

And don't forget to diable all your extensions and trying to reproduce an issue before reporting it either here or on bugzilla. Most times it's an extension issue and therefore the extension author should be contacted.
Posted by: Kurt at November 1, 2005 6:42 PM
Here is a handy extension you can use to change the channel setting:
http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=4412 extension.
The author has updated the extension to include the latest channel.
Which channel you need to be on depends on what build you are coming from (nightly, beta2, etc).
Thanks to Kurt for the extension reminder - extensions can sometimes cause issues, so it is helpful to uninstall them and then try to repro the problem.
Posted by: marcia at November 1, 2005 6:49 PM
I too had the problem where the partial update didn't work. (Updating from BETA 2). By it's nature this bug will be hard for an individual tester to reproduce, though. :(
Posted by: starwed at November 1, 2005 9:07 PM
Does Firefox keep an update log that indicates why the partial update failed?
Posted by: Jesse Ruderman at November 1, 2005 9:40 PM
Are you guys sure you had the actual Beta 2 and not the candidates that all kinds of sites post are the final everytime we get close to a release. Because the day before beta 2 builds the partial updates were screwy.
Posted by: Kurt at November 1, 2005 9:43 PM
I certainly _thought_ I had the real Beta 2. ^_^ At any rate, the UA string is: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b5) Gecko/20051006 Firefox/1.4.1
Posted by: starwed at November 1, 2005 9:51 PM
I had FF 1.5 Beta 2 -> Did "Check for Updates".
Then I got the message, that a partial update failed and a full update will be performed - done that, and now my FF is still FF 1.5 Beta 2 :(
Posted by: Lockhead at November 1, 2005 9:55 PM
FF RC1 is still slow. I don't really see the improvement on this realease. FF beta2 is much faster.
Posted by: Alberto at November 1, 2005 10:25 PM
I found that the tab fuction does not work perfect on ff rc1 as it was working on FF beta2. This is the link where I encountered the problem. www.optonline.net if you on the webmail link, you will be able to see the problem. As I said before it was working perfect Beta2.
Posted by: alberto at November 1, 2005 10:47 PM
The Firefox product homepage still says: "Try Firefox 1.5 Beta 2"
Posted by: Peter Lairo at November 2, 2005 1:37 AM
Hello,
As stated by alberto tab options are not working correctly.
When, I go to citibank.co.in there is link by title.
Don't have user name?
It is javascript that opens new window. In my tools->options->tabs I have set Force links that force new windows to open in new tab. But, still it is being opened in new window.
Posted by: Praveen at November 2, 2005 3:21 AM
At one point, the browser, (beta 1.5) crashed after several windows had been opened. This has only happened one time, but it was unexpected and never happened with the regular release that preceeded this beta.
Posted by: Tom Altmeyer at November 2, 2005 6:02 AM
As many others said, I can see 1.5RC1 being significantly slower than 1.5b2. Something happened along the way, don't know what. 1.5b2 was really zippy when compared to 1.0.7, now it's pretty much the same. I would strongly recommend to investigate this noticeable differencefor the final release.
Posted by: NicolaF at November 2, 2005 6:56 AM
By the way is there a sort of test (benchmark?) we can do ourself to check this speed difference?
Posted by: NicolaF at November 2, 2005 6:57 AM
I installed rc1 from beta2. Whatever website I went to, I got the
Unable to connect
---------------------
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at WHATEVER SITE I WENT TO
I uninstalled and reinstalled firefox, deleted my profile and created a new one, and restarting. Nothing will make firefox connect to any site, http or ftp. I reinstalled beta 2 and it works. I am writing this comment using IE (sorry) on the same computer. I cannot think of why rc1 does not work.
Posted by: Micah at November 2, 2005 8:41 AM
not sure if this already reported, but when i got and update from b2 to rc1, i clicked on "Details" link in Software Update windows where it asks to restart Firefox. Link went to release notes of b1.
(not b2, not rc1).
i have zero extensions and themes installed.
Posted by: ohman at November 2, 2005 10:11 AM
Alberto & Larry: Do you know if a bug has been logged for your JS window in tab issue? If not, can you log one and CC me on it? If you can't, I can dig around and check. Also, are you using a clean profile with no extensions or an existing profile with extensions? Let me know, as I'm going to try to reproduce this.

I'd like to see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=309550 blocking rc2. an anoying rendering regression, but I suspect it's too late for this.

I get an error sometimes, where firefox tries to load a page, and before loading it just sits there for a while, and after 30 seconds it finally displays an error or the page itself. Other than that it worked nicely!
Posted by: Brandon at November 4, 2005 7:15 PM
Had firefox working fine- then installed 1.5 RC3 and bam! It stops working. Cannot get it to connect to any site, inside a firewall or outside, with proxies or without.
Uninstalled and reinstalled 1.0.7 first and then 1.5 RC3. Nothing.
Any suggestions?

"Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at..." is killing me too. I'm not sure why, but some website just won't load. IE works fine on them though. I used a different computer with an older version of FF and it worked as well...
Sad.
Posted by: Harlan at February 7, 2006 1:59 PM
I had the "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at..." error for a while too. Turned out the problem was ZoneAlarm blocking the program, even though ZoneAlarm did not appear to be running in the icon tray. If you have "vsmon.exe" running in Windows Task Manager, it's a good bet this is your problem. Try running ZoneAlarm and then accessing the Internet again -- the standard "ZoneAlarm has blocked..." message will appear.

Re: Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at WHATEVER SITE I WENT TO
In response to this issue: Do you have Norton Internet Security (NIS) installed? I had read on a post somewhere that after someone uninstalled NIS, Firefox worked again. I looked into the Personal Firewall settings in NIS, and (even though I have been using the latest Firefox for a while) NIS had decided to now Block All for Firefox. If you are familiar with NIS, every time a new program tries to connect to the Internet, NIS establishes connection rules for that program. I noticed the other day that even though I had been using Firefox, NIS popped up and said "Establishing Connection Rules for Mozilla". Maybe NIS has had an update recently that gets it confused, and makes it block Firefox. I just went into Personal Firewall > Configure > Programs tab, scrolled to Mozilla Firefox, and changed the Internet Access setting to Permit All, and all is working again in Firefox. Hope this helps, because it was annoying me a lot :)

I have this problem with firefox. It does not connect to any site that is https. I get a timeout error when I try to connect to any https site.
Firefox 1.0.7 started showing me this weird error (coz I am able to access https sites from IE) so I installed 1.5 and even now I have the same problem.

"Firefox can't establish a connection to the server"
Error message has kept me offline, though sometimes when the program loads, it finds its default home page. After that - nada.
What's up Firefox? I hate IE...
Posted by: Anonymous at June 6, 2006 3:02 PM
Had this problem too - I'm running Panda anti virus - for some reason, Firefox had been denied permission to access internet through firewall - I opened Firewall, then advanced settings, saw that Firefox was categorized as "no access", then clicked "regenerate list" and behold, Firefox runs as usual.
Hope this helps someone else.

YES! Its 'vsmon' that caused the problem for me!
Firefox stopped finding any websites after it automatically updated, so I found the answer on this page just now!
Even though zone alarm wasnt running, vsmon was in ctrl-alt-del list, I couldnt close it, so I just opened zone alarm, and it said firefox is trying to access the net....I click ok and bingo, I have firefox back with all my settings without a tiresome uninstall and loss of info.
Thankyou 'Harlan'!

Hi !
looking for answers as to why the VMware firefox appliance stopped working. Firefox 107 didn't work on installation of the appliance but 1.5 did just fine. Now it does not. Any clues?
BTW I also run ff107 under win2000. If I try to access the net while Zone Alarm is locked, then FF fails, I unlock ZA and try again. FF fails until I dump ALL files in the cache using windows explorer. Starting ff generates new cache files then works fine. Same symptoms if ZA is off but net is down.
Have a good day!

Note that in some cases the authors might not have gotten around to making their extension compatible, so we don't need bugs filed on all of these items. We would just like you to test and provide feedback as to whether the extension is working properly and whether it is compatible

As stated previously there is a problem with the auto update from Beta 2. However, it doesn't state there was a problem and behaves as if its updated. When you check the About dialog and on the titlebar it still claims to be Beta 2.
