The road to beta - Help Us test Software Update - Firefox and Thunderbird!

Update: If you identify a blocker or stop-ship bug sofware update bug, you will get a Firefox tshirt! [Mozilla QA team will make the final judgment call on who gets shirts - the bug you find must be one that is not already known, and must be determined to be a blocker bug by the Mozilla team (drivers@mozilla.org).

We are now ready to do some testing of software update for both Firefox and Thunderbird. To that end, we have a page up on our new QA Community wiki that explains how to test the software update feature. We have a set of positive, negative and preferences tests. You don't have to run all of the tests, but if would be helpful to have our users test various aspects of software update to make sure everything is working as expected.

Please make sure to read the FAQ and to post failures to the QA blog. Please make sure to reference the known bugs and known issues listed at the bottom of the FAQ before posting failures to the blog.

So far no excitement generated by my post, so now a quick horror story for you to ponder:

Stand in front of your screen and say "Software Update" five times. What happens?

(a) Son of Candyman bursts through your computer screen and asks you for a loan to buy an iPod.

(b) Virginia Madsen contacts you and ask to be in your independent film to try to revive her career.

(c) amazon.com launches with a link to the Philip Glass CD "The music of Candyman"

Did the I and II tests with update from Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b4) Gecko/20050824 Firefox/1.0+ ID:2005082423:
I
B.4: There is no "Show List" Button available (probably only shown when some Extensions are incompatible?)

The C Test should better be just before the G test (easyer/less to test)

The F Test should also be right after the B Test.
F.4: There is no "Details" Button, just the clickable Text: "View more information about this update"

II
Test A and C dont work at all, it seems atm app.update.url value is simply ignored?

E: Hitting Tab key once is enough to give focus to the "Later" button.

F: Great, works ok even with Suspend to Ram!, not like known G Failure.

(L and III not tested)

I think missing in known Bugs: Wasn't it supposed to have a more descriptive Name for available Update instead of simply "Deer Park 1.0+" If I recall correctly there is already a Bug about this...

Hiding the update pauses the update process, instead of continuing it in the background.

Since bug 302721 landed the app.update.url setting that is set by users is now ignored so the negative tests which involve setting the update url will no longer work. Setting app.update.url.override would do what you're after now.

See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302721#c28 for more info.

I'm not seeing anything in the history after applying an update. It says "No updates installed yet."

On a tangent -- what happens if a user decides not to install a particular update, preferring to skip it in favor of later one? (e.g. A nightly is known to have a major regression and I'd rather wait a day or two until it's fixed before updating.) There doesn't seem to be a mechanism to force a check after an update has been downloaded, nor a way to abandon (and not just postpone) installing a downloaded update.

Posted by: Michael Carman at August 26, 2005 6:21 AM

is app.update.url now the default to get update too work?

Posted by: RPGMaker35 at August 26, 2005 7:07 AM

Did tests running the latest nigtly build (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20050825 Firefox/1.6a1)
under XP Pro SP2 (German).

I. All positive tests are OK, besides:

B: There is no "Show list" button (probably, no incompatible extensions ?)

E: If I hide download dialog and then click on "Downloading Deer Park" in menu, the download dialog reappears (this is OK). The problem is that the progress bar is not shown for a first few seconds and Kb/sec indication is completely wrong (way too high).

This is confusing (user expects to see progress bar at least at the same place where it was before the dialog was hidden).

II.

A. Failed (as mentioned by someone above, app.update.url doesn't work, and app.update.url.override has to be used instead).

B. Failed. www.mozilla.org/update shows error 403

C. Failed. Even if browser downloads index.html file (as seen by sniffer/Ethereal), error message says "AUS: Update XML File Not Found (404)" instead of "AUS: Update XML File Malformed (200)".

The remaining tests rely on app.update.url setting, which has no effect in current build.

Wish to repost two possible bugs

After downloading the updates. I did't choose to restart.

Now when i go to "Help" menu it still shows "Resume Downloading DearPark 1.0+..."

I dont know if its a bug or not. But i whould expect it to display "Finished Downloading Please Restart DearPark 1.0+ Now." or just disable the menu item till user restarts the Firefox.

One More bug, when i click on "Details" link on "Software Update" Dialog its open's up a blank page.

Posted by: Yogesh Kanitkar at August 26, 2005 10:43 AM

Software Update offers to update to Deer Park 1.0+, even though I am using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20050825 Firefox/1.6a1.

This may be the correct update path (1.0+ newer than 1.6a1 ???), but is is at least confusing and misleading (smaller number newer than bigger number).

Thanks, and great work guys. :-)

PS. Why does the UA say rv:1.9a1 and 1.6a1. :-\

Question: with the upcoming incremental update, will it be possible to install patches from bugzilla to test with downloading nightlies or compiling custom versions?

That would be great as I'm not a fan of either of those senarios but there are lots of patches for fixes and features that I would love to be able to try out.

Thanks,

Posted by: Christopher at August 26, 2005 11:47 AM

Peter
I'm assuming you updated from a build before 8/25. In that case, if you didn't change the app.update.url and since there was a newer trunk build available, That was what you were updated to. Try update again today (8/26). Make sure the app.update.url is reset to default. We've switched to the new update sytstem which knows to update branch to branch and trunk to trunk.

Posted by: Tracy at August 26, 2005 11:52 AM

Right now, clicking on the Details link will do nothing - this is a known issue.

Posted by: marcia at August 26, 2005 11:54 AM

It might be good to add how to get to about:config in Thunderbird in the FAQ. Also, the tests are Deer Park (Firefox) biased. The request says you want Thunderbird feedback as well, so the tests should probably mention TB as well.

For the test cases, I ran using Thunderbird 1.0+ (20050825) on Windows, I had a few failures not mentioned in the FAQ:

I.B.4 - I see no "Show list" button to click.

I.C - I did I.D first (pausing the download, then resuming). After clicking "later" to install the update I downloaded later, I see "Resume downloading Thunderbird 1.0+..." in the Help menu instead of "Apply Downloaded Update Now" as expected. Selecting "Resume downloading Thunderbird 1.0+..." brings back the Software Update window, I get a "Connecting to the update server", then it just sits there and appears to do nothing.

II.A,B,C - I made the change, but I still got "no new updates available". I doublechecked I made changed the right one.

III.F - I've done updates for coming up to a week now and I get "No updates installed yet" here.

Posted by: Steve Green at August 26, 2005 12:14 PM

Tracy:

No, I downloaded the build from 20050825. I then selected Help / Check for Updates. That is when it offered to update (from 1.6a1) to 1.0+.

I did try the Check for Updates "today" (26.08.).

The app.update.url doesn't offer "reset" in the context menu (it's grayed-out). My app.update.url is: https://aus2.mozilla.org/update/1/%PRODUCT%/%VERSION%/%BUILD_ID%/%BUILD_TARGET%/%LOCALE%/%CHANNEL%/update.xml
Bug, or am I *still* doing something wrong?

Posted by: Peter Lairo at August 26, 2005 12:37 PM

BTW: I get the same for Thunderbird. UA: Thunderbird version 1.6a1 (20050825). Software Update offers "1.0+".

Did anyone else experience a fail on IIIe? When I uncheck "Automatically Check for updates to: Deer Park", the "When updates to Deer Park are found" area is not grayed out. For reference, I am running:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b4) Gecko/20050825 Firefox/1.0+
(Nightly from the 25th)
Sorry if somebody's already mentioned this. I didn't find anything about it here or on Bugzilla.

"Auto-update is design to incrementally download the available update in the background over an extended period of time. (approx. 90 minutes of Deer Park uptime) The developers did this to save user bandwidth and server load."

90 minutes!?!?!

Perhaps developers are online for 90+ minutes a day, but not everyone is a developer--some people actually other things than hang out online. I hope we can assume this "design" is changed by release.

Concerning III E:
" E. Automatically check for Updates to Firefox/Uncheck the box

Steps:

1. Navigate to Tools | Options | Advanced. For Mac, Go to Preferences | Advanced. Click on the Update tab.
2. Uncheck the preference to automatically check for updates to Firefox

Expected: Confirm that all of the items under "When updates to Deer Park are found" are grayed out and not able to be selected. "

--> in fact, when i uncheck the box for "deer park", the result is not automatically apply.
I've to press ok and re-open the option box to see the grayed items ...
Same when i check the box --> i've to re-open the option box to be able to modify "When updates to Deer Park are found".

Same behaviour when i uncheck/check all box (Deer park, Installed extensions and theme, dictionaries)

Posted by: jimich at August 29, 2005 7:54 AM

I'm getting the same behavior (reactivate options to grey out). Has anyone (maybe you?) filed a bug report on this? (Is it even bugworthy?)

Posted by: Anonymous at August 29, 2005 1:23 PM

Regarding Sam's comment - "Auto-update is designed to incrementally download the available update in the background over an extended period of time. (approx. 90 minutes of Deer Park uptime) The developers did this to save user bandwidth and server load."

The trickle update will continue in the background, but if you go up to the menu and click on the "downloading update" - this will re-initiate the speedy process. So if you want the update fast and the incremental update has already started, go to the menu item.

Posted by: jimich at August 30, 2005 7:56 AM

Posted by: jimich at August 30, 2005 8:17 AM

I noticed this morning something I thought was counterintuitive. When I started Deer Park, instead of popping up the browser it went through its daily "Checking for compatibility upgrades to your extensions". This takes awhile (I suspect network/server slowness or similar), but when it's done, I'm presented with another screen telling me the extensions that are incompatible with Deer Park. It then says "Deer Park can check for and install newer, compatible versions of these components" and I'm given "Check Now" and "Don't Check" buttons. Isn't this what it just got done checking on the previous screen? Won't clicking "Check Now" just do the same thing?

I'm not sure if this is a bug or if my brain just isn't in gear yet, but it seems a bit odd.

Auto-update in Thunderbird does not appear to work correctly via HTTP proxies. This works just fine with Firefox.

The Thunderbird build I am experiencing this issue with is:

version 1.0+ (20050830)

Posted by: Bill Gianopoulos at August 31, 2005 1:54 PM

Disregard my previous report Re: Thunderbird not updating correctly via proxies. Turns out proxies did not work correctly with the version of Thunderbird I was using. I will try this agian tomorrow.

Posted by: Bill Gianopoulos at August 31, 2005 5:21 PM

OK. Happy to report that update went fine using proxies. It even works correctly with automatic configuration scripts and WPAD. I will try running the testcases now that it appears to be working.

Posted by: Bill Gianopoulos at September 1, 2005 8:47 AM

This has been commented on before, but I think the comments were misunderstood. If you are running a Firefox trunk build and run the update process, it correctly updates to the latest version 1.6a1 trunk build. However all the messages that occur duing the update process mis-identify the new build that is available and being installed as Deer Park 1.0+ when it should be identified as Deer Park 1.6a1.

It is NOT updating to the branch build instead of the trunk, it is just the messages that are incorrect. This is all with the default app.update.url and default version settings in the browser.

Posted by: Bill Gianopoulos at September 1, 2005 8:58 AM

My OS: XP SP2. Using HTTP proxy (no pac)
I have tested FF branch software update a number of times - starting with the Aug25 build, ending with the Aug31 build. When going Help -> Check for updates, an update is found and downloaded. A dialog is presented and requests to close and restart Firefox, which I do.
After the restart, a 'please wait' dialog is given and finally launches FF. I then notice that the OLD build is still running and no trace is left of any update that has been downloaded and/or applied.

Any suggestions?

Posted by: SanderG at September 1, 2005 11:56 AM

It appears that you have to run Software Update n times until it does not find any more updates - instead of just downloading the latest update it downloads all nightlies one by one, as it seems.
I did not see this in the FAQ if it is as intended.

Posted by: SanderG at September 2, 2005 2:16 PM

I am running the nightlies of Deer Park on OS X 10.4.2.

I haven't used Deer Park in several days so it was still on the 20050903 build when I opened it this afternoon. I found it rather curious that Deer Park then proceeded to update itself incrementally - that is to say it downloaded and installed the update that brouught it up to 20050904 (which of course required a restart of Deer Park), and then it did the same thing for 20050905, and repeated day-by-day until the current 20050908 build. Shouldn't it have been able to update directly from 20050903 to 20050908 instead of requiring 5 separate updates? Doesn't seem like a very efficient system.

YES! Its 'vsmon' that caused the problem for me!

Firefox stopped finding any websites after it automatically updated, so I found the answer on this page just now!

Even though zone alarm wasnt running, vsmon was in ctrl-alt-del list, I couldnt close it, so I just opened zone alarm, and it said firefox is trying to access the net....I click ok and bingo, I have firefox back with all my settings without a tiresome uninstall and loss of info.

Thankyou 'Harlan'! Phil :-)
