Help us test the Litmus tool
As we move towards the first beta release for Firefox 1.5, we'd like to get as many people involved with testing as possible. To that end, we've developed a new testing tool called Litmus, to allow our testers to view tests and submit their results. We need you to try out our new tool and let us know what you think before we bring it to a wider audience. In addition, we need as much attention as possible given to testing of these products. Here's what you can do to help out:
* Download a recent nightly build * Go to the testing tool and follow the instructions to run a short test. If you'd like to help out more, just click the link and select an area you would like to test.
If you are interested in testing Thunderbird, you can download a nightly build, and choose from the list of tests.
Please post any issues you have with the testing tool as a comment to this blog, and post any issues you have with Firefox and Thunderbird to Litmus.
Thanks for your testing!

Did the 7 "Find in Page" Tests of "Basic Functional Tests" but at the end, "Submit Results" opened blank Page. It seems all Notes I wrote are lost now :(
Used the same Email Address as here.
Posted by: Stebs at August 22, 2005 4:46 PM
2. Try with same Result...still blank Page.
Had to open separately each Test with "Show" into a new Tab, copy and paste my notes and submit them separately. That way it worked now.
This should be fixed, else this is going to frustrate the testers...

Thanks Stebs. I'm looking into it now.
Posted by: Zach Lipton at August 22, 2005 5:09 PM
Sorry about that. Should be fixed now.

Thanks, working now :)
Tested with the 3 "Page Info" Tests.
BTW, would be probably good to provide here a direct link to choose from the list of tests for Firefox (like the one for Thunderbird), and maybe also add such a link to the Deer Parc Alpha 2 Start Page.
Posted by: Stebs at August 22, 2005 5:54 PM
Stebs: Thanks for all your testing. I'll see about getting a direct link posted to the blog as well. The end goal of this is to post it to the Deer Park start page; we just want to get some feedback through here first.
Thanks,

I did many tests. What I miss: an option like "test skipped", because at first, I thought I would have to choose one option on each block in order to be able to submit the results.
I like this test tool! It makes it easy to do some testing, I can choose what I want to test, ... cool!
Posted by: Tobias at August 23, 2005 2:22 AM
The bookmark tests are demotivating. "do this for manager, sidebar, toolbar,..." - the number of real test I have to do is far bigger than originally anounced. Those things have to be done, okay, but I fear that some users skip some points, like manager or sidebar and check "pass" anyway. If it would be split up in 4 different tests, results would be more reliable.
Posted by: Tobias at August 23, 2005 5:44 AM
Litmus doesn't use character entities to stop spammers like Bugzilla does. For example, the email address "someone@some.one" would be encoded by Bugzilla as "someone@some.one". Litmus just leaves it as "someone@some.one".
Posted by: Grant Wohl at August 23, 2005 8:14 AM
Grant - good thinking. Litmus now uses the same scheme as bugzilla to filter email addresses.

Some tests, which involve "restart Firefox" or "clear cookies" make it hard to have Testrunner running. I did most of the cookies tests, but at the end, when I submitted them, I got a blank site. Since other than with IE, having 2 instances of Firefox open makes no difference (shares the same sessions), how should I run those tests? Visiting Testrunner with IE?
Posted by: Tobias at August 23, 2005 11:53 PM
I run those tests with Mozilla Suite. Some tests, which involve "restart Firefox" or "clear cookies" make it hard to have Testrunner running.

Stebs,
We are planning on making the tests as granular as possible some time in the near future. In the mean time, we thought it best to get something out to the public testing effort. Most of the test cases were not written with public testing in mind. These were written for Testrunner which had been exclusively used inhouse until recently. The testcases were imported as is into Litmus, just to get things going.

Zach,
Nice work! What's the status of https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302688 ?
Posted by: Hass at September 2, 2005 11:08 AM
I'm getting a different test every time I navigate to http://testrunner.mozilla.org/litmus/simpletest.cgi
so if I have a clean profile and the test asks me to close the app. I can't enter my results by navigating back. ?
Posted by: Hass at September 2, 2005 11:32 AM
when I go to http://testrunner.mozilla.org/litmus/simpletest.cgi U just get a thing congratulating me on downloading the latest Deer Park. No tests in sight. What am I doing wrong?
Posted by: Anonymous at September 2, 2005 5:27 PM
It'd be nice if the Litmus site suggests tests a visitor can run if they're run by less visitors than other tests. This way, there'll be less redundancy in the results and more of the more obscure features can be tested.
Posted by: Tsee at September 2, 2005 6:35 PM
the litmus home page should be the first page to pop up after installing a nightly of Deer Park a2. it is an alpha product so it wouldn't be too much of a surpise to be sent there rather than a page akin to the Firefox/Thunderbird "congrat you have successfully installed..blah blah blah."

Edmonton dominated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and the 4-0 margin in Game 6 makes it hard to imagine the Oilers not hoisting hockey's Holy Grail above their heads in less than 48 hours. And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.

YES! Its 'vsmon' that caused the problem for me!
Firefox stopped finding any websites after it automatically updated, so I found the answer on this page just now!
Even though zone alarm wasnt running, vsmon was in ctrl-alt-del list, I couldnt close it, so I just opened zone alarm, and it said firefox is trying to access the net....I click ok and bingo, I have firefox back with all my settings without a tiresome uninstall and loss of info.
Thankyou 'Harlan'! Phil :-)

Note that in some cases the authors might not have gotten around to making their extension compatible, so we don't need bugs filed on all of these items. We would just like you to test and provide feedback as to whether the extension is working properly and whether it is compatible
