Thunderbird Users - Help us test Software Update (Windows Only)

The new application update service is now available for Thunderbird users on Windows and we could use your testing help!

The instructions are very similar to those Asa outlines in his July 5th post in this blog.

Important Note: It seems, that the zip builds are broken since July 7th. So, the update system only works with the installer builds at the moment.

1) Make sure you are running a nightly Thunderbird trunk build from July 7th or later. Here is a link to the Windows build for July 7th: Windows Build

2) Go to: Tools / Options / Advanced / Config Editor. Filter on app.update. Change app.update.url to:
https://aus-staging.mozilla.org:8711/update2/0/%PRODUCT%/%VERSION%/%BUILD_ID%/
%BUILD_TARGET%/%LOCALE%/update.xml

3) Now choose "Check for Updates" from the Help menu item and if there is a new nightly build available, we'll download the update and install it.

Note: you'll get the same cert warning dialogs with the testing server that you see when updating Firefox. Please refer to Asa's July 5th post for more about the cert warning dialogs.

Again, this is only for Windows. Please try it out and let us know if you have any issues. In your post, if you can also please state which version of Windows you are using, that would be most helpful.

Looks like "Show Details" doesn't work right at the moment. Otherwise it's looking nice.

The update worked, but I was bit by bug 250374, thus the build is unusable for me. Blank screen on start up after upgrade.

Heh, I got curious and tried the update system this morning. It worked perfectly, though the build itself is broken as described above.

It seems, that the zip builds are broken since July 7th. So, the update system only works with the installer builds. However, I could test the update system before the zip builds broke and it worked (I tried that just after the last checkin in the "software update" bug).

Marcia, maybe you should mention, that users should only test the new update system with the windows installer version of Thunderbird, so that known issues don't get repeated (zip builds are currently broken).

The update system is slick. It downloaded and installed the update successfully. However, as reported, when Thunderbird restarts, all my mail is missing. The updater will be awesome when it is stable. Keep up the great work.

July 7 build and subsequent update work perfectly for me. However, on the main post above, when viewed in the main blog, app.update.url is cut short right after %LOCALE because the text runs behind the sidebar. Some may be confused by this and update app.update.url incorrectly.

Above behavior is using 1280x1024 resolution. Using smaller resolutions, behavior is worse and more text is cut off, but problem is more apparent.

No update available (I installed the latest nightly 9-jul_8:59) but everything looks fine on my Windows 98 machine, including with the run-of-the-mill functionalities (account creation, mucho mail download and process).

Yea! I can finally check for updates in Tb like I can in DP! I'm running Thunderbird Alpha 2 version 1.0+ (20050708) and no updates were found, but at least I can check from within Tb now.

hi there,

I was just trying the next current update and the update system was giving me an error message "thunderbird was unable to verify the integrity of the incremental update it downloaded, so it is downloading the complete update package".

This procedere is aweful slow, maybe the update server is totally overloaded (i'm connecting with DSL 3000 to the web) or the complete update package is not available.

Extracted ZIP build for 07/07/05. Changed app.update.url to correct URL. Update found, and certificate warnings as expected. I then received the message that an incremental update failed, but a full update package would be installed (I don't have the exact error as I clicked through to try again). The update stuck at 'Connecting to the update server...'. Any retry attempt brings up the update window with the text 'Paused downloading Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0+', and 'Connecting to the update server...' below. Both the resume and next buttons are grayed out. I've had this profile for quite a while.

Again, this is with version 1.0+ (20050707) and an older profile.

Update to 20050710 went smoothly and quickly. Clicking 'Details' during update did nothing. Still being warned about 'chameleon' before updating.

Installed using the installer for the trunk build as above and changed the app.update.url, but it says there is no update avaliable. (20050707)

The zip builds work again after a yesterday's fix by mscott. However, the update system doesn't work as expected (from the July 7th build to the latest trunk build) - the account sidebar is still empty. I will try updating again when a new nightly "arrives", but as I already mentioned, the update system should be working on zip builds.

Ok, got it stuck. I had to delete the update-files. Then it worked again. It always told me it would resume, but it didn't.
Backgrond: I hab a bad wlan-connection.

But why does the update weight much more (7.2Mb) than the original installation file (5.8Mb) ?

Today the update worked fine, however when (just for fun) I checked for the update again, I ran into the XML issue, and an update was not allowed. It also mentioned going to (I believe) www.mozilla.org/update but when I tried that, I was "forbidden access" (apparently because I don't yet have an account).

I reset the "app.update.url" and was told that there was no update available.

What's odd was I am reasonably sure that I had set app.update.url properly in the first place (or I would not have received the update).

Was a bit disappointed to see that the headers in the pane window for the 1.0.5 release were no longer colapsable. At least there's no bug there when you run thru your mail.
