« Help testing Mozilla 1.7.9 Release | Main | Firefox and Thunderbird 1.0.6 have been released! »

Please help us test 1.0.6 builds
We are getting ready to release Firefox 1.0.6, Thunderbird 1.0.6, and Mozilla Suite 1.7.10 to address some API issues in the Firefox and Thunderbird 1.0.5 releases and we would like some help from our testing community.
Here are links to all of the builds:
Firefox: Windows, Mac, Linux
Tbird: Windows, Mac, Linux
Suite: Windows, Mac, Linux
Things to look for in these builds:
*Extensions that interact with web content and events - test on a wide variety of content types
*For Thunderbird, please test the Enigmail Extension
*Test extensions that you normally use to make sure that they function properly
Please post any issues that you find to this blog. Thanks!

What happened to 1.7.9? It doesn't seem to have ever been officially released (though some distributors appear to have picked it up anyway)....
Posted by: Gordon P. Hemsley at July 16, 2005 4:19 PM
The situation with 1.7.9 is exactly the same as that for Firefox 1.0.5: it broke API compatibility in a small way (in other words, it broke things for a couple of extensions) and is being replaced with 1.7.10 once the testing process is complete and we can be sure of its quality.

I lost internet for a bit and enjoyed mozilla. When I got back on. It went very smoothly and that was firefox 1.0 beta. Then I was told to update. I got the update and have been using 1.0.4, and it sucks!. Locking up. Using up to 50,000 Kb of memory, and that is a shitload. I have 512 in ram and didnt have a problem with 1.0 beta. First question then comment. What is with the unbelieveable amount of memory usage? Makes me wanna go back and use IE. I am gonna give this 1.0.6 beta a go and then take the upgrade after it is finalized. But if I see the memory usage at that outragous amount after final, I am giving up.

The application name on the Thunderbird Mac build is lowercase ("thunderbird"). In past releases it's been capitalized ("Thunderbird").
Posted by: James at July 16, 2005 5:35 PM
James: Chase and I noticed that the other day. I think we may just leave it this way for this release.

Had a bug with cancelling installation of the google toolbar. Partially through the installation i uninstalled from the extensions manager and tried to quit. Firefox then throws up a dialog asking if i want to cancel the download, acknowledging 'yes' brings up the same dialog and then hits a loop trying to quit the download.

It works well with my extension SearchWP, that didn't work well in Firefox 1.0.5 without a workaround. (Bug 300852)
Thanks!

Weird, because like 10 minutes ago, it went to Firefox like it should.

Firefox 1.04 indeed locks up.
I can't believe this issue was not addressed in 1.05! This is very very important. Firefox on the Mac can not be used in these last versions.

Is there any reason to keep it lowercase? I don't have any compelling reasons not to. (Well, except for possibility that it may cause problems if someone using case-sensitive HFS runs any scripts which depend on the name of the application. I would honestly be surprised if this was the case for anyone.) However, it is inconsistent to the OS X user experience, where application names usually begin with a capital letter.

@John: nsIPrincipal and nsIFileSpec as far as i know, these API changes have either been reverted and/or modified (for example restore old syntax and add a new function for the new API).

Thomas Hoff: That's the norm I'm afraid. With these hurried fixes like the last one I don't think we'll see much to smile about on the memory usage front. Worrying thing is that memory usage goes up and up as you open more sites. I get a feeling that certain issues are being fixed in the Deer Park release (1.1). Until then: Mozilla or K-Meleon?

It appears the firefox win link points to thunderbird..
Posted by: steve england at July 17, 2005 4:02 AM
@Thomas: I believe that when you use quite some tabs in Firefox 1.0.x, the memory is not released. However, this is solved in the next-generation Firefox 1.1 (to be released).

Enigmail works OK for me in this version. However there seems to be something strange with the 'save password' feature.
I installed thunderbird in a separate directory, and entered my account details. After this, I set the connection to SSL and entered my password, with save password set to true. After restarting thunderbird, I had to fill in the password again.
I deleted the ~/.thunderbird directory after this and setup thunderbird again. I set the save password box to true again. When restarting thunderbird I had to re-enter my password again. Now I got the warning dialogue about saving passwords and after this it works.
The save password feature does look a bit flaky.

There is some wierd views when displaying decrypted messages that I didn't observe on 1.7.8.

Also changing the mailfolders in the main mail window sometimes, not always didn't show any reaction.
I don't know whether this is due to enigmail or the suite.
Will post this also to the enigmail list...

Thomas Hoff: I can only reccomend deleting your profile and starting with new onle. Millions of people do not have your problems.
Posted by: Papuass at July 17, 2005 9:25 AM
Jumping from pre-1.0 Firefox to 1.0.4 probably will not work, due to profile changes made for 1.0. In the run-up to 1.0, the rule often was to recreate your profile -- this was not abnormal for "alpha" software, although at some point it had to end so we could be sure we preserved profile compatibility and didn't lose users (Firefox had millions before 1.0).
So yeah, what Tim said. Thomas, anyone else: if you could start a new profile and report whether your hangs and other problems with 1.0.4 go away, that would help. Even better would be if we had a complete understanding of the cause of your problems, but that's going to be a lot of work for likely little or no gain, and everyone's overloaded as it is.
Sorry for the inconvenience. We should do better in subsequent releases, and I believe Deer Park alphas have had no such generaly/bad/undiagnosed profile problems.

Ok there are some problems that really have been messing with my browsing expierence, I actually have to use IE sometimes now. The copy function simply does not work, try to right click on a link and click 'copy link location', or do control c in the address bar, it simply does not copy. And another thing, sometimes websites wont load in firefox, and I have to use IE. Like it looks like it will sit there forever trying to load it, no errors, just sitting FOREVER.

Brandon: what version of Firefox are you running? From what previous version did you upgrade? What happens if you create a new profile (run firefox.exe -ProfileManager and choose Create, continuing through start-up on the new profile)?

I am using the 1.06 version posted here. I deleted my profile from C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Mozilla. These issues are also reported to me by my friends, so it isn't me alone. I previously had 1.0.5, which also showed some of the same behavior. 1.0.4 was fine as much as I can remember so at least. Clipboard simply doesn't work with firefox, cant copy any links. Plus that other issue.
Posted by: Brandon at July 17, 2005 3:18 PM
Both 1.0.5 and 1.0.6 have had the same problems for me. I cannot use my clipboard with Firefox, as copying links does not ever work. Also, it also doesn't fully load some webpages, but it seems completely random. If I try again later I can access the webpage usually.

Hi folks!
Been using FF 1.0.6 off and on for some time, and got back to Opera finally, because I'm sick of having to either "ctrl-click" or "right-click>'Open in a new tab'" my Bookmarks to open them in a new tab... which Opera does natively!
Can someone tell me how to edit the contextual menu in Bookmarks, so that "Open in a new tab" becomes default choice...?
Aside from that, it took me several restarts (of my machine: HP laptop and WinXP SP2; 512MB DDRAM) to finally get the "TBE" sub-menu in Tools/Options...
I think FF 1.0.6 NB is faster than 1.0.5, but that's just wishful thinking on my part, maybe...
I'd really like to address that menu issue, so, if one of you can tell me where to look and what to do, you'd make a happy monkey outta me!

Hi Didier,
Did you go to see if any extension could meet your needs?
You have several extension that helps your tabbing navigation. You also have sevral extension that helps you do anything!
Go and see at:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/showlist.php?application=firefox&numpg=10&category=Tabbed%20Browsing
I think that "Basics 1.0" or may be "Tabbrowser Preferences 1.2.7.1" should meet your needs.

I happened to notice something when fixing a computer, etc...
Using test firefox 1.0.6 from:-
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2005-07-16-05-aviary1.0.1/firefox-1.0.6.en-US.win32.installer.exe
on Windoze-98 First-edition;
Which shows useragent :-
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7.10)
Gecko/20050716 Firefox/1.0.6
-- the Download progress-bar gives "negative
numbers" of kbytes/second... at least in
some circumstances...
In this case it says
"34.4 MB at -10.-3 KB/sec; unknown file size"
[the unknown file size is not an issue, it
isnt seeing or looking-for a filesize from
the FTP server, but that's not important].
Regardless of known/unknown filesize, firefox
normally gives a good KB/sec throughput
display.
See:-
http://evtech.org/~enyc/firefox-negative-speed-download.png
For a picture of the download box with this
effect happening...

Not sure if this is a bug or a settings thing.
When a stationary/background is used in TB by one user, it defaults to all users(5) accounts on the computer. Individuals cannot have a preset stationary. If a stationary is used from templates it defaults through to all users.
Otherwise TB 1.0.6 seems to be working well on xp sp1 using: smoothwheel, timestamp, display user agent, headers toggle, nightly test tools.
FF 1.0.6 has work flawlessly with: flashgot, chatzilla, ebay negs, moz calendar, nightly tester tool.
