deer park nightly build update system testing
We're looking for some brave souls ;-) to help us test the new update mechanism. This is a key feature for 1.1 and we're trying to get the basics working for Deer Park Alpha 2. Right now the testing is fairly simple. You'll need a recent nighly build and the system will update you to the latest nightly build. Here's how it works.
First, you'll need a build that's newer than 2005-07-02 on Windows or Linux (Mac isn't quite there yet). Next, you'll need to go into about:config and change the app.update.url to this string https://aus-staging.mozilla.org:8711/update2/0/%PRODUCT%/%VERSION%/%BUILD_ID%/%BUILD_TARGET%/%LOCALE%/update.xml After making this change and when a newer trunk nightly builds is available, click the Check for Updates item in the Help menu. This should launch the Update system and guide you through the application update.
We know about the certificate issue -- that's just a result of the testing server we're using and won't be there when we move over to the final service. We also know that it will offer updates even when none exist. Oh, and this isn't "incremental update" yet, it's downloading all the Deer Park files and replacing your current install. Incremental, or patched updates, are coming next.
If you've got feedback on this new feature, please restrict it to the basic testing I've outlined above. Discussion about binary/incrimental/patching updates or the notification system should wait until we've got those working and we're ready to test 'em.
If you download yesterday's build, you can update to today's with this system. If you have today's already, then tomorrow morning (sometime after about 8 AM PST) you should be able to update to the latest build
Thanks for your help!
update: Linux users will need to get a tinderbox build from this afternoon since earlier builds were broken. If you get one of these tinderbox builds, you should be able to test update tomorrow morning.
update 2: If there aren't updates available (as mentioned in the known problems paragraph) you will encounter problems. Right now that problem is a 404 error in the Update wizard. We're workin' on it (though the 404 is a step up from the hang we were having.)

after changing the update url, i get this:
AUS: Update XML File Not Found (404)
Posted by: ColdFusion650 at July 5, 2005 6:22 PM
ColdFusion650, can you tell us what your OS, Firefox build ID, and Locale are?

Posted by: Asa Dotzler at July 5, 2005 6:34 PM
Using:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050705 Firefox/1.0+ ID:2005070506
Selecting Check for updates yields a 404. I think this is due to the change in bug 299736 as before it went to "Connecting to Server ...". This is due to the fact I have a current build.
The Update system sucessfully updated my build from yesterday.
I agree with comments made about the fact that the final window in the screen shots (the native application window that appears whilst the files are updated) needs some work to make it more identifiable with firefox. Also the hardcoded firefox should probably be changed temporarily to Deer Park to match the rest of the rebranding.
Posted by: Jaime Mitchell at July 5, 2005 6:53 PM
I followed the instructions and got the error:
AUS: Update XML File Not Found (404)
I'm not sure how to check my Firefox Build ID but I got the installer from here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-1.0+.en-US.win32.installer.exe as of 2:45 AM GMT 06 - July - 2005.
I am using Windows XP Pro SP2.

Upgrade from 7/3 to the latest went without a hitch. The update team have done a great job!
Posted by: Ryan at July 5, 2005 7:05 PM
Confirming that a too recent build (when no update is available) gives AUS: Update XML File Not Found (404) error...
Had a very recent hourly from today with this error first, then installed older nightly and update went flawless (even closed all windows while updating, restarted and the update startet from 0 without Problem). The new installed nightly (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050705 Firefox/1.0+ ID:2005070506) gave 404 error again.
You might also take away the ending . from the string as it might confuse some...

Stebs, you are correct. Thanks for the pointer on the dot there. I've removed it to prevent possible bad copy & pastes.

Updated from July 3rd nightly to July 5th nightly with no problems! Very excited!

No problems here - updated from 7/3 to 7/5. Very nice experience, however, why is the package so large? Nightly builds are around 1 MB smaller.

I'd like to try for you guys on a Mac, so mail me or something if that's available :).

No problem upgrading from 20050703 to 20050705. Keep up the good work guys.

A minor polish issue (probably due to the unfinished-ness of this), if when the download is finished you press "Later", the menu item in Help still says "Resume Downloading Deer Park 1.0+..." even though you've finished. If you click the item you get the update window up but it says "Paused downloading Deer Park 1.0+" at the top and "Connecting to the update server..." at the bottom.
Posted by: FP at July 6, 2005 12:48 AM
Updated successfully... 07/03 (zip build) to 07/05
Are there any update xmls for the hourly builds (pacifica, for me)?
Posted by: Kevinn at July 6, 2005 12:54 AM
One more thing, when you press Later, it says the update will be applied next time you restart Firefox. Next time you start Firefox the update is applied but then Firefox exits, and you have to manually start it up again, I'm not sure if this is due to pressing Later or if that's the way it always happens.

Hello ..
Works great from 07/04 to 07/05 ...
This is really beter than actual update system where a install wizard come and ask you for the 58913th times if you want standard or custom update :-) ... Joe Average users was affraid of installer (uh, i will call IT guys ... ) :-)
2 things: It seems that links to build informations pointed to blank page :
"For more general information about this update, Click here" --> blank page
"Details" (during the install)--> blank page
But it sounds really cool

I've always wanted to test firefox builds and do on the odd occasion in windows XP by using fast user switching, but this is a pain.
Is there anyway to test builds like this in XP without risking corrupting the your stable firefox install/profile?
Posted by: dlr at July 6, 2005 2:52 AM
Updated from 07/03 to 07/05 with no problems on Win98. MUCH better than having to manually download Firefox every time I update, great work!
The only complaint I have is that I had to restart Deer Park myself after it updated even though I had pressed a 'Restart' button... I found that a little strange and it could be quite confusing for some people.

I get "AUS: Connection Refused" with 20050704 build.

I've tried the update system to upgrade from 05/07 to 06/07.
It show me that there is an update.
I decide to download it.
It stucks on "connecting to the update server".
I cancel (Close).
Now, on the Help menu, the link to check for update has been change d with Resume downloading deer park 1.0+.
I click on it, and i'm still stuck on the same "connecting to the update server".

I noticed a bug when updating from 7/5 to 7/6. When I installed Firefox manually, I only installed DOMI and not talkback or the reporter tool. When I updated, Firefox installed Talkback and Reporter without prompting me or asking my permission. While this might not be a problem for most users, when I update a program I do not expect it to add additional components - only update the existing ones.
Posted by: Jim at July 6, 2005 8:54 AM
It sticks on "connecting to the update server" for me as well. Same experience as Riccardo.

I have just one note: when the firewall does not explicitely allow connections on the 8711 port, there is no timeout and no error message ...
Also, on preferences dialot, updates tab: when pressing "Check now" for extensions and themes, the check box is unchecked.
When updates checking is done, there is an error reported for the Reporter extension.

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050707 Firefox/1.0+ ID:2005070703
to
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050707 Firefox/1.0+ ID:2005070714
1.
When the new update has just been released and has not been propagated to all the mirrors yet, Deer Park seems sometimes not to find the update file. A message will show up saying:
Deer Park is unable to verify the integrity of the incremental update package, Deer Park is now downloading the complete update package.
But beneath the progress bar an inactive throbber is showing with the text 'Connecting to update server...' and nothing happens. The Pause button is disabled.
When I close the update window, the menu item under Help now says 'Resume downloading Deer Park 1.0+. Clicking that menu item brings up the update window saying 'Update is paused' or something similar, but the Resume button is disabled.
The only way to make update working agian is to delete updates.xml and active-update.xml from the firefox program folder (maybe deleting active-update.xml will do, but I deleted them both).
2.
When you install an extension without restarting (this extension will be installed after you restart Deer Park) and you run update. Update says that that particular extension is not compatible with the new update, and will be disabled after the update. But of course the extension is compatible, and it actually won't be disabled after restarting the browser after the update.

Working flawlessly since 20050705 (not before). After updating and restarting, latest 20050707 build tries to load the non-existing link http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/releases/whatsnew/
Probably intentional, right?

I also get the "Malformed XML" error. Using Live HTTP Headers I can see that the following URL is requested:
It outputs an HTML page containing the string "Error: The requested update probably does not exist in the source directory." followed by something that looks like a PHP var_dump().
As indicated in the URL I am using a homemade build of Firefox on Windows.

This procedere is aweful slow, maybe the update server is totally overloaded (i'm connecting with DSL 3000 to the web) or the complete update package is not available.

Great work!
The update works brilliantly (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b3) Gecko/20050713 Firefox/1.0+).
Two suggestions - not sure if this is the right place for them (apologies if this isn't)
The "Deer Park Alpha 2 Start Page"
(http://www.mozilla.org/projects/deerpark/alpha2.html) talks about the Mozilla QA page and also mentions that spoftware updates are disabled. It might help if it carries a link to the Mozilla QA page and this page, respectively.
Thanks

I ran into this while updating today.
It said "Resume Downloading Deer Park 1.0+..." even though you've finished. If you click the item you get the update window up but it ends up saying "Paused downloading Deer Park 1.0+" at the top and "Connecting to the update server..." at the bottom. I could not get it unpaused even after browser restarts so I had to uninstall and re-install Deerpark. Now the updates work again.

In case this helps anyone... I was getting a AUS: Update XML File Malformed (200) error when trying from work with a proxy set, but from home, the update worked. It seems that at work that our proxy doesn't allow access to ports that aren't in the "well known" range, so it wasn't allowing my connection to go through. Since I'm assuming the final update URL will be the standard port 80, this shouldn't be a problem when this is finally released.

is there any way to stop the update box automatically opening when firefox is launched? i'm using a nightly build on linux, and it's really annoying ... unchecking "automatic updates" does not help.
