Deer Park Alpha 2 Release Candidates
We now have a round of builds that are very close to what we will shortly release as Deer Park Alpha 2.
These candidate builds are now available for testing for each of Windows, Mac and Linux--- with l10n builds to follow shortly. Please note that for our alpha releases there are feature and polish issues that have not yet been completely worked out. We release these milestones to get the core code out to our community to test out major gecko and platform changes as soon as possible. If these test out well, we'll be shipping Deer Park Alpha 2 shortly.
This will be second alpha in the Deer Park product development cycle and will include all major and significant features, whether pref'd on or off in order to achieve wider testing and to solicit quality feedback. The quality standard for this release is pre-production and therefore it should be of the quality required to support testing, and for Extension, theme and web application developers to begin compatibility and feature testing in advance of Firefox 1.1. It may break some but not all 1.0+ targeted Extensions. It should not contain any significant and known crashers.
Please download these builds and let us know of any significant issues which should stop this release. In particular, please ensure that these builds work for you to access all major web sites and services that you use regularly, e.g. e-mail, e-commerce, banking, etc.
The new software update engine has been incorporated into these builds but is presently off by default as we put together and coordinate test plans. Details to be posted here shortly.
Also, after a round of successful testing and debugging during the first Deer Park alpha, we're enabling the Fastback feature. With this feature enabled where before the browser needed to re-render each page from a local cache of documents, now you will see a dramatic speed improvement when you click the back and forward buttons to navigate between recently viewed web pages.

Linux: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2005-07-10-05-trunk/
If you find issues, please post them here.
Before filing bugs in Bugzilla, try to check to see first if a bug has been filed. (Note: There is a link of the main Bugzilla page called "Hot Bugs" which references the most frequently filed bugs.)

I like this build and have complaints about it. What is the Deer Park Alpha 2 milestone start page?

I use it now

I've noticed that trunk builds for the last week or so don't ever seem to finish loading pages. The candidate builds do the same. Besides the annoying aesthetics of it, this bug also prevents the find toolbar from coming up, which is extremely annoying.
Posted by: Ryan VanderMeulen at July 10, 2005 5:20 PM
I've tracked the problem down to using Adblock Plus with Pierceive's Filterset.G (blacklist and whitelist).
Posted by: Ryan VanderMeulen at July 10, 2005 6:17 PM
Just to say, I've been using trunk nightlies for the last week or so, and aside from a few that wouldn't start at all, I haven't really had any big issues. A few of the Firefox 1.0 extensions I've tried have acted funny, but that's expected, so it doesn't count. Also, I have had the FastBack feature enabled the whole time, and it's worked fine.
Posted by: Peng at July 10, 2005 7:49 PM
With Fastback (bfcache) enabled links that are visited are NOT marked as 'read', the ONE item that raises above other issues in usuability, and is 'off', even though its been pref'd on for some time now. BfCache will NOT get tested unless this annoying issue is addressed ASAP.
Been using 'trunk' builds since Jan, 1 and they are getting better as we go. Keep up the great work.
Posted by: Littlemutt at July 10, 2005 8:06 PM
With bfcache enabled, the links are not marked as "read." However the links are surrounded by black dots instead. I see this as an interim solution and would like to see the problem fixed in future nightly builds.
Posted by: anon at July 10, 2005 9:12 PM
> However the links are surrounded by black dots instead.
In fact, that's just because the link was focused (all focused links and form controls has a dotted outline by default), which makes prefect sense as it was the last element one focused before leaving the page. So this isn't an "interim solution". It just happens.

The first time I open Deer Park each day it warns me about an unresponsive script and doesn't open until I tell it to stop the script.
Also, when I open it after using Firefox 1.0.4 and it warns me about incompatible extensions, if I tell it to check for updated versions and it finds none, the 'Finish' button doesn't work and I have to close the window before Deer Park can continue to load.
Not major problems, but quite irritating.
Posted by: James C at July 11, 2005 5:43 AM
It looks like youare running two very different version of Firefox. You should uninstall one of them.
Posted by: David B. Haun at July 11, 2005 5:59 AM
What's a ~mac.mar build file? Just out of curiousity.
Posted by: Hank Roberts at July 11, 2005 8:56 AM
I think you should try for somewhat better quality for the beta release over alpha2.
Posted by: David B. Haun at July 11, 2005 9:22 AM
I had the same problem as Ryan VanderMeulen but I do not use Adblock. Creating a new profile stopped the "page loads forever" problem. I use statusbarclock, tabmix, sage, flashblock, and the three default installed extensions (dom inspector, reporter, talkback). I'm not sure precisely where the problem creeps in, but a new profile fixed it. I could test more if you are curious on it.
Posted by: Greg at July 11, 2005 9:42 AM
I hung DP from 10 JUL. I had Chatzilla and Adblock installed and running, plus maybe a dozen tabs.
I finally had to do Command-option-esc to quit DP. No Talkback when that happens. There should be!

I've been running the alpha all day and it works pretty much fine! Good job! :)

I experienced the same problem as James C, after DP tried to migrate my extensions, I could not press the Finish button. Had to use the [x] close button.

Actually, I do also get that unresponsive script thing. I just hadn't really blamed it on "Deer Park". :P

The update doesn't work anymore...

Print Preview need a little doing...
Just going to Page Setup and returning with OK loses
right side of preview page...

update worked for me
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.8b3) Gecko/20050712 Firefox/1.0+ ID:2005071206
except that when I said restart it did not do so automatically - need to click on icon again
Posted by: ian at July 12, 2005 3:14 PM
Earlier today I checked for an update, which I was told was available *but* some extensions wouldn't work with it. This is fine, just what I expected. I checked to see which extensions would fail ... just to know. I wish I had written down the extensions but I didn't.
I selected "Later" for the update, and went on to use Deer Park for a bit.
I then decided to check again for the update, and this time, while the update was available, there was no repeat of the prior caution concerning extensions.
(I believe that there should have been a repeat of the caution! The point is that of the User selects "Later" after the initial caution, it should not be assumed that if he selects the update at a later time that he has abrogated his wish to be informed. Sometimes one warning is not enough. I can see someone sayng, "Geez, that's RIGHT! I forgot that FOO-BAR will not work now!")
Odd thing is that I did the update, and a check of my extensions showed that all were installed and apparently functioning properly.
One other thing: I had about 30 tabs open... trying to type this... saw nothing while typing, was typing ahead for a while and ... *poof* system crash. I am wondering if Deer Park has a limit on open tabs ?
Soooo... having big here :) Thanks for all your hard work !

Love Deer Park. Had no trouble installing the new version but the tab order change doesn't work. I can move the tabs around but then you can't click on any other tab but the one you are on right now - with only two tabs shown. Tried it with 3 tabs and one tab works as expected (the one that was moved) the other two don't work and seem like they are one page - I think that makes sense.

No problems with
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8b3) Gecko/20050710 Firefox/1.0+
Posted by: Hank Roberts at July 12, 2005 10:17 PM
Oh, uh, except when I open the Extensions window and click the little two-headed arrow (the one that looks for updates) -- then I get a window that says 'the following ... have been disabled" -- with a blank window, and below that four blank text-free ovals, one far left and three to the right, none of which have any text in them. The two on the far right are colored blue and do nothing; the two to the left are white and blink when clicked, and do nothing. The whole window is titled Deer Park Update, has a minimize button that works but an inactive close button. It appears to require quitting Deer Park to get rid of it, I'll find out.

Tab order change works perfectly for me.

The "Report Broken Web Site" menu item does not work. The "Help" tab hilights when I try - it's still hilighted, after the pulldown menu appeared and disappeared but the "Report" level did nothing.
The old Javascript bug appears to have returned:
This web site overlays any other tab that is opened later:

Should I stay with the 7/10 to test for OSX or go with the c7urrently available 7/12?
Posted by: Hank Roberts at July 13, 2005 8:08 AM
As usual, I can't find anything in Bugzilla, so I'll report it here...
During my first run of DPA2, I encountered an error about some javascript not responding. Unfortunately, the error dialog was badly borked. The proceed/cancel buttons had icons, but no text and pressing on either button yielded no response. Only a kill/restart salvaged the situation.

In the absence of good, or any, advice, about which nightly to check, I went ahead and changed to:
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8b3) Gecko/20050710 Firefox/1.0+
Talkback crash report filed.

Successfully looked, when I clicked the button to check for extension updates, and found one for AdBlockPlus to 0.5.8, and appears to have installed it successfully.
Posted by: Hank Roberts at July 13, 2005 10:51 PM
Tried the 7/15 release, found myself unable to pull down menus or open a new window if none were already open, and it crashed each time I tried to quit it.
Reverted to Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8b3) Gecko/20050712 Firefox/1.0+
Wishing there were some place other Mac users hung out to compare notes. Or am I just underqualified to know the secret?
Posted by: Hank Roberts at July 16, 2005 9:15 AM
Oh. I just wasn't competently searching Bugzilla.
ugzilla Bug 301092
Oops. It was the latest AdBlockPlus that screws up the pulldown menus and window opening.
Nevermind.

open the MPEG, view it,

Leaves the MPEG (Quicktime, for me) window overlapping the web page window. Looks like the old "can you view Javascript" superimposition problem.
