Need some help testing - Sidebar extensions and a Bookmarks bug

We could use some helping testing some sidebar extensions to see if this bug is still a problem: Bug 249883

Also, we just landed a fix for this bug. This is a fairly regularly duped bug and it would be great to get some test coverage on this on Mac and Linux.

Please post issues you see on this blog, or preferably, directly in the bug if you have Bugzilla access.

Deer Park Alpha 2 Release Candidates

We now have a round of builds that are very close to what we will shortly release as Deer Park Alpha 2.

These candidate builds are now available for testing for each of Windows, Mac and Linux--- with l10n builds to follow shortly. Please note that for our alpha releases there are feature and polish issues that have not yet been completely worked out. We release these milestones to get the core code out to our community to test out major gecko and platform changes as soon as possible. If these test out well, we'll be shipping Deer Park Alpha 2 shortly.

This will be second alpha in the Deer Park product development cycle and will include all major and significant features, whether pref'd on or off in order to achieve wider testing and to solicit quality feedback. The quality standard for this release is pre-production and therefore it should be of the quality required to support testing, and for Extension, theme and web application developers to begin compatibility and feature testing in advance of Firefox 1.1. It may break some but not all 1.0+ targeted Extensions. It should not contain any significant and known crashers.

Please download these builds and let us know of any significant issues which should stop this release. In particular, please ensure that these builds work for you to access all major web sites and services that you use regularly, e.g. e-mail, e-commerce, banking, etc.

The new software update engine has been incorporated into these builds but is presently off by default as we put together and coordinate test plans. Details to be posted here shortly.

Also, after a round of successful testing and debugging during the first Deer Park alpha, we're enabling the Fastback feature. With this feature enabled where before the browser needed to re-render each page from a local cache of documents, now you will see a dramatic speed improvement when you click the back and forward buttons to navigate between recently viewed web pages.

Windows: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2005-07-10-07-trunk/
Mac: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2005-07-10-07-trunk/
Linux: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2005-07-10-05-trunk/

If you find issues, please post them here.

Thunderbird Users - Help us test Software Update (Windows Only)

The new application update service is now available for Thunderbird users on Windows and we could use your testing help!

The instructions are very similar to those Asa outlines in his July 5th post in this blog.

Important Note: It seems, that the zip builds are broken since July 7th. So, the update system only works with the installer builds at the moment.

1) Make sure you are running a nightly Thunderbird trunk build from July 7th or later. Here is a link to the Windows build for July 7th: Windows Build

2) Go to: Tools / Options / Advanced / Config Editor. Filter on app.update. Change app.update.url to:
https://aus-staging.mozilla.org:8711/update2/0/%PRODUCT%/%VERSION%/%BUILD_ID%/
%BUILD_TARGET%/%LOCALE%/update.xml

3) Now choose "Check for Updates" from the Help menu item and if there is a new nightly build available, we'll download the update and install it.

Note: you'll get the same cert warning dialogs with the testing server that you see when updating Firefox. Please refer to Asa's July 5th post for more about the cert warning dialogs.

Again, this is only for Windows. Please try it out and let us know if you have any issues. In your post, if you can also please state which version of Windows you are using, that would be most helpful.

Mac testers - help us test Safari Profile Migration

Mac users will appreciate the new Safari migration feature in the latest versions of Deer Park. This feature allows users to import their bookmarks, cookies, preferences, and history into Firefox directly from Safari. It would be great if we could give this some more testing, so if you have a mac, please go ahead and give this a try:

1. Download this nightly build.
2. Launch Deer Park and choose File->Import.
3. Select Safari.
4. Select the settings you want to import from Safari.
5. Confirm that everything was imported successfully, that no data is missing, and that everything behaves as expected.

If you have any trouble or comments, post them as a comment to this post.

thanks to zach for writing this up so I could post it!

Firefox 1.0.5 test builds

You want This Post

We'll be pushing out a Firefox and Thunderbird 1.0.5 release pretty soon and now that we've got all our fixes in, we could use some help testing these builds. If you find any problems that didn't exist in previous 1.0.x releases, please let us know.

Mac
Linux
Windows

As soon as the Thunderbird builds have passed smoketests, I'll link them here as well. Thanks for all your help.

update: Oops, I spoke too soon. We're taking one more fix. I will update later with the new testing builds.

deer park nightly build update system testing

We're looking for some brave souls ;-) to help us test the new update mechanism. This is a key feature for 1.1 and we're trying to get the basics working for Deer Park Alpha 2. Right now the testing is fairly simple. You'll need a recent nighly build and the system will update you to the latest nightly build. Here's how it works.

First, you'll need a build that's newer than 2005-07-02 on Windows or Linux (Mac isn't quite there yet). Next, you'll need to go into about:config and change the app.update.url to this string https://aus-staging.mozilla.org:8711/update2/0/%PRODUCT%/%VERSION%/%BUILD_ID%/%BUILD_TARGET%/%LOCALE%/update.xml After making this change and when a newer trunk nightly builds is available, click the Check for Updates item in the Help menu. This should launch the Update system and guide you through the application update.

We know about the certificate issue -- that's just a result of the testing server we're using and won't be there when we move over to the final service. We also know that it will offer updates even when none exist. Oh, and this isn't "incremental update" yet, it's downloading all the Deer Park files and replacing your current install. Incremental, or patched updates, are coming next.

If you've got feedback on this new feature, please restrict it to the basic testing I've outlined above. Discussion about binary/incrimental/patching updates or the notification system should wait until we've got those working and we're ready to test 'em.

If you download yesterday's build, you can update to today's with this system. If you have today's already, then tomorrow morning (sometime after about 8 AM PST) you should be able to update to the latest build

Thanks for your help!

update: Linux users will need to get a tinderbox build from this afternoon since earlier builds were broken. If you get one of these tinderbox builds, you should be able to test update tomorrow morning.

update 2: If there aren't updates available (as mentioned in the known problems paragraph) you will encounter problems. Right now that problem is a 404 error in the Update wizard. We're workin' on it (though the 404 is a step up from the hang we were having.)

regression hunting

Looking over the Reporter data today, I see that american express.com seems to have regressed. We could use some help in determining if this is a Firefox regression or something that's changed at the website so if you've got some time and can test some older builds to compare with the current trunk, that would be extremely helpful.

Thanks for all of your testing efforts!

Thanks to all of you that logged into the #bft channel on Tuesday and participated in testing. We had 23 Windows testers, 7 Linux testers, and 2 Mac testers that participated. We had several individuals that completed more than 80 test cases, and they included tomcat, jayfromtaiwan, and grantaw.

On Thursday we discussed ways we could improve the next event we have, and we are currently working on revamping that process. The plan for the next event is to use an email template to report testing results. As these details get firmed up, we will post the new procedures in this blog, so stay tuned.

I will be contacting individuals that participated via email and will work out the details of getting you your rewards. Again, thank to everyone for participating - you are helping to make Firefox that much better!
