Bad Poll. Bad!

Today, foxnews has a poll asking "Do you think the Syrians are harboring Iraqi officials?". Ok, this is a reasonable question, but the answers to choose from are deplorable, most notably: "a) Yes, one was already found there." In reading this, I would infer that yes, we found one so naturally they're harboring them. In fact, 94% of respondants thought the same thing I did and chose this option.

The fact is, no, we haven't found any Iraqi officials in Syria with any certainty. The poll question is leading and serves only to misinform the reader. It's stuff like this that explains why over 60% of Americans think that at least one of the 9/11 terrorists were Iraqi (see the NYTimes poll from a few months ago, in fact none were).

I'm not 100% on this, but I do believe it has been reported that several high level Iraqi Government officials did flee to Syria. From the Guardian (UK) - "Saddam's third half-brother, Sab'awi Ibrahim Hasan al-Tikriti, has taken refuge in Damascus, Syria, reports claim.". Also, I believe when Abu Abbas was nabbed, they had proof that he was headed for Syria as well... Here's the Guardian link...

Fox News has been seeing its highest ever ratings since the war in Iraq started. I'm sure they wouldn't mind another one. In the immortal words of Charles Foster Kane, "You provide the prose poems, I'll provide the war."

oh dear, Saddam's third-cousin removed twice's roommate's girlfriend's brother escaped to Syria? LETS ROLL!!!

Now that is a bad, nay, idiotic poll, but I think you'll find that the reason that 60% of Americans thought Iraqi's were involved was because your government wanted them to.

Oh man do I hear you on this one. While not quite as bad, the CNN online polls went from okay to bad about two years ago for the same kind of reason.

Americans are so misinformed about this war that it's no longer funny. I wouldn't have had a problem supporting a war to liberate the Iraqi people, but instead Bush had to go and do almost everything wrong diplomatically (incl. justifying the war for the wrong reasons) to the point were I felt I could no longer support a war, even if some good really might come of it. Frustrating.

Yet another reason to stay away from the propoganda machine called Fox "News."

Posted by: Ben on April 18, 2003 02:06 PM

FOX is the 4th fornicating of the US Army. So just don't believe there war propaganda.

Maybe you should read news here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/

BTW: Fourth week of war and still no chemical weapons found? Was Mr. Bush lying?

It was interesting the other day when the Fox newsreader said that they were bombing the Al Quaida base in Iraq when she meant the Republican Guard base. And the fact that her co anchor did not correct her..........

Faux News has little or nothing to do with "news" IMHO. Faux is a newsmagazine-esque entertainment show for the masses aiming to garner support for whatever rubbish the Administration wants to spew forth onto the public. They are popular because they tell Americans what good, patriotic Americans want to hear; that we're great, powerful, moral, virtuous, etc., etc., etc.. They even make it more palatable by packaging it as "news". Plus they put some hot chick in miniskirts and calf-high black boots on during prime time, then do repeated pull-backs to show off her legs. You can just see the male demographic that gets their "news" from Faux hoping for a "Basic Instinct" moment and thinking to themselves, "Laurie...Dhue-me, Dhue-me."

And what's with the makeup on the men? I understand that they need some of it for the lights, but put dresses and wigs on them and the makeup is so bad, you'd think they were transvestites.

Oh yeah. Back to the topic at hand. What kind of a poll would you expect from Faux?
"Do you think the Syrians are harboring Iraqi officials?".
a) Yes
b) No
c) Not sure
d) Don't know

With answers lacking any hints on which one to choose, the respondents wouldn't have an clue on how to answer; since they've been watching Faux and clearly would have no grasp on what's really happening in the world.

Gotta love loaded questions in polls:

Have you ever __cked a (insert vulgar noun) that you didn't like?

a) Yes I have.
b) No, I liked all of them.

(sorry for the feigned vulgarity, but you get the point. 2-5 multiple choice responses aren't sufficient for a 5+ billion population)
