Aside from the eyes, doesn't the outer borders of row 9-10 (the smile) look a little different from the reference rendering?

Yes, row 10 looks wrong. There is a two pixel black border when there should only be one.

Whilst looking at this I came across odd Safari 1.3 behaviour.

Open new window, then create a second tab. Fill the tabs with the following URLs:

Tab 1: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/hyatt/archives/2005_04.html#007953
Tab 2: http://webstandards.org/act/acid2/reference.html

Now switch between the tabs. On my installation at least, I get the second tab overlaid on top of the first (ie. the reference image appears but the first tab's text does not clear away).

Ian, the behaviour you describe is not just Safari 1.3. Firefox shows the same. I suspect a clever trick of the test's author, enabling you to do some kind of blink comparison.

The overlay behaviour isn't happening to me under Firefox (1.0.3 running under 10.3.9) - only under Safari. Which version are you running?

Another thing: under 1.3/10.3.9 (no other combination available to test), if you go to http://webstandards.org/act/acid2/reference.html then resize the window, drawing artefacts are left on view. For me, I get half-drawn mirrors of the reference plus images of the window's base.

forgive me if I'm wrong, but surely just passing the acid2 test doesn't mean much if you just fix things just to pass the test. (although it is a good start). Getting complete support for the css web standards (or at least, as near complete as can be reasonably expected) should be the goal.

I can confirm the rendering issues mentioned by Ian ... and I'm close to 100% certain it's not some clever trick by the Acid2 test's author. Maybe we'll be seeing 1.3.1 some time soon, eh Dave? =)

And you really need to do something about the border on the nose .. it's very odd, and potentially very annoying ..

@miro: I think you're sort of right, but the point is that by checking compliance with the test, the whole point is that you're checking compliance with CSS2 properties, selectors, etc that you would encounter on the web .. even if not in such contrived situations. So fixing the rendering of the test can really only improve Safari's general standards-compliance.

Confirmed, the first and last black border "pixels" on line 10 should not be there.

This appears to be a problem on the third <div> with the following CSS:
position: absolute
right: 1em

Perhaps a positioning problem?

The overlay problem seems related to the "overflow: hidden" property, as it does not hide the scrollbar on the test page as the comment implies. If you switch to the reference rendering, the scroll bar is not completely erased, even though that page does not require a scroll bar. The artifacts that Ian mentions occur in the same (uncleared) portion of the window.

One thing that's worrying me I think is the web standards' guy's fault. Check out the text on the guide page at http://webstandards.org/act/acid2/guide.html

They consistently use "Hello world!" with a lowercase "w" character. Given the code and everything else I can see, there's no reason for the "w" to be lowercase. Is this a mistake? If so, it seems like they should be fixing it on that page. Or is there really some reason the "w" is supposed to be lowercase here?

In a 2nd Tab it doesn't clear the 1st Tab's display when switched to. When resizing a window showing it it draws remnants of the window buffer below the smiley face. I am sure both issues are related.

Great improvements to 1.3 but, the JavaScript changes broke an applescript I use. This one liner stopped working:

do JavaScript("getselection();") in document 1

now returns an empty string every time.
