Comments: Safari 1.3

It's great to see a new version of Safari that's faster, better, and more compliant all around. Keep up the good work! I've noticed the speed improvements already (pages with semitransparent PNGs seem faster especially).

I guess now you can get back to World of Warcraft, huh?

Good show on XSLT, I've been missing that.

I can't tell what's wrong with http://www.somethingpositive.net/index.html SomethingPositive, but it displays differently the first time I load it than subsequent times. Even if his code is broken, that's probably not what you want.

Posted by Michael Croft at April 15, 2005 11:53 PM

To be specific, the second comic strip is offset the first time the page loads and then is in the right place after a second load.

Also, there are plenty of non-rendering changes. (like the change to how the download context menu works, the collection browser, including the history collection, etc. Is anyone blogging about/publicly releasing lists of those changes? I'm interested...

Now this is what I'm talking about. The last few days have mad the last couple months of checking a blank blog worth it.

sounds great

question, are/will apple use the new plugin API, for the quicktime plugin? maybe in tiger with QT7?

i've always thought java and quicktime plugins have run bad on the mac, for example scrolling/resizing window, while viewing one of apples movie trailers.

Posted by Joel at April 16, 2005 12:05 AM

Ingenious. even my bank's onlinebanking pages now work lightning-fast. This is an incredible piece of software :)

Posted by rupee at April 16, 2005 12:36 AM

Sometimes, I have this effect (in all Versions of Safari): if I click a link, the load-process does not start until I move the mouse - very strange.

Posted by dj at April 16, 2005 12:45 AM

Great update. It's very fast. I think the scrolling is noticeably smoother, and resizing seems a little smoother too.

Interestingly, it looks like Google Maps has broken somewhat in 1.3. They seemed to get the examples to the right of the opening map working a while ago, but now they're all screwed up.

Posted by Eric Allison at April 16, 2005 1:02 AM

I think all of the improvements and new features are cool; the speed improvement is noticeable and very welcome.

However, I'm very disappointed by the constant degradation of WebCore's standards compliance and functionality in the area of bidi text support. It is especially unfortunate that a major bug in the implementation of the Unicode bidi algorithm isn't fixed, even though a patch for KHTML (which works just as well for WebCore) has existed since November 2004 (KDE bug id 91955), and a rendering issue that goes far beyond cosmetics or performance (effectively making any long page unreadable), which has been reported as early as December 2003, still isn't fixed.

I realize that this reflects the priorities of management, rather than engineering, but it reflects bad on Safari as a product and on Apple in general, that it seems to be more about being able to claim support of the latest technologies than about getting the basics right.

Posted by Mitz Pettel at April 16, 2005 1:12 AM

I think you forgot to mention transparent windows :D

Safari 1.3 now supports transparent windows properly. in the Debug menu you can check Use Transparent Window, and it will. Very cool for debugging widgets :D

Here I was so proud of myself for finding a really peculiar CSS crasher in Safari 1.2 and you went and fixed it on me!

Posted by Michael Ditto at April 16, 2005 1:29 AM

Fabulous. The speed bump is definitely noticeable — almost drastic at times — and I'm incredibly pleased to learn that full the full Level 2 DOM is supported. Yay getComputedStyle()!

Just out of curiosity, do you plan on releasing an update to 1.3 at some point containing the Acid2 fixes? First thing I did in 1.3 was check the Acid2 test, and if my memory serves me correctly there was no noticeable change from 1.2.

Here's hoping that the fixes won't be restricted to 2.0. I'll personally be an early Tiger adopter, but as a web developer I'd like the fixes to reach as wide an audience as possible.

Thanks again, and great work.

P.S. — Omigod, I just realized that Undo works in form elements now. Sweet!

document.body.offsetHeight
document.body.offsetWidth

body.innerWidth.

Do you know what I can use instead to get the same result as above commands?

I feel very thankful for Apple's great commitment to its browser. A new version of Safari that's faster, better, and more compliant? You rock me! What's new about Web Standards? Improvements on XHTML-, CSS-, DOM-compliance.

Thanks! :-)

Posted by Pete at April 16, 2005 4:04 AM

The new 1.3 Safari now makes far too much screen updates! My HTML page which uses a lot of CSS (I use only CSS layout, no other HTML element than div and span) and a JS clock which replaces a span element content at the bottom of the page every second makes Safari 1.3 refresh the whole page instead of only the span, and eats all CPU (I've been using QuartzDebug to confirm that). In 1.2.x Safari was refreshing only the necessary window portion, not the whole window.

Posted by Stéphane at April 16, 2005 4:10 AM

Out of interest Dave, I know it's not your department, but do you know why the keyboard shortcut for View Source was changed from cmd-opt-v to cmd-opt-u? I'm having trouble imagining why the one is any better than the other.

Posted by Chris Clark at April 16, 2005 4:11 AM

I like pretty much how text selection extends to the whole bounding box (much more consistent with the rest of the OS), and that I can now select an entire paragraph by triple-clicking it.

But I've noticed two strange things: misalligned list items in the sidebar on A List Apart, and the CSS-styled atom feed on my website looks pretty ugly and displays tab characters as sqare boxes. Curiously, the RSS feed which share an almost identical style sheet looks perfect.

Why non supported rabel tag yet?

Posted by TED at April 16, 2005 4:39 AM

I'm excited to see that HTML editing support is available to 10.3 users as well and not only in 10.4. The other enhancements are also very welcome. Having Panther and Tiger use practically identical rendering engines will simplifiy compatibility testing a lot.

On the downside I noticed a bug I've reported on Tiger regarding broken handling of XMLHttpRequest now also appears in 10.3.9 (radar #4072280). Oh well, some JavaScript hacks will take care of that until you guys fix it.

And finally Safari gets a JavaScript console... nice!

Posted by Jonas Wallden at April 16, 2005 4:47 AM

Great work to all on the Safari team :)

So, so good to see undo in forms.

I notice that WebCore has become more strict in matching CSS selectors - specifically case-sensitivity - #fooBar != #FooBar

The 1.3 update seems to break SimpleMachines (http://www.simplemachines.org) forums. I submitted a bug about this during the dev preview. Basically their quote system no longer works with Safari, although it did with 1.2x. I'll submit a more detailed bug report, but I just thought I'd post it here as well.

Posted by John Kelly at April 16, 2005 6:21 AM

Great work. I do hope however that there is some extensive documentation planned for all this. I really don't have enough time to snif around to find out how all this works. HTML editing is definitely welcome. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Posted by Chris at April 16, 2005 6:31 AM

Why was the keyboard shortcut changed from command-shift-arrows to command-curly braces? E.g. with the Finnish keyboard layout one needs to press four keys to change tabs, and at least on the laptop keyboars that pretty much makes it impossible to do with one hand (unless your Richard Kiel).

Sure the technical improvements are nice, but that's one big dent on usability.

Posted by twaijn at April 16, 2005 6:39 AM

When I click a feed: link, I get an error message stating I need 10.4 to view RSS feeds, even though there are other applications installed that are registered for the feed: URL scheme. Daft, and anti-competitive.

Posted by Graham Parks at April 16, 2005 6:47 AM

Command-shift-arrows conflicts with the "jump to beginning/end of line while selecting everything to the left/right of insertion point" command in text boxes, which is universal throughout the system.

Wonderful job!

I didn't know ahead of time 1.3 was part of the update. I noticed how much faster Safari was checked the about box. What a great sunrise.

Posted by Jamison at April 16, 2005 7:09 AM

Wow, what a fantastic update. Ebay works properly again, and the added speed is great.

I'd like to mention four particular bugs that occur in Gmail's interface, however, which were not resolved by 1.3:

1. When first logging into a Gmail account that has keyboard shortcuts enabled, they don't work until first clicking inside the window or using the tab key a couple of times. In other browsers, keyboard shortcuts are active immediately after the inbox appears.

2. When typing the first few characters of an e-mail address (in the compose mail screen) and then using the auto-complete feature to fill in the remainder of it, the cursor does not jump to the end of the address as it should but remains positioned before the portion of the address that was auto-completed. This means it isn't possible to quickly use autocomplete to add multiple recipients for a message.

3. Gmail's new rich text composition option does not appear at all in Safari.

4. After composing a message, hitting the tab key highlights the "send" button beneath the message, but then typing the spacebar to activate it has no effect. The mouse must be used to send the message.

Of course, these bugs will not actually stop me from using Safari for Gmail. It's still much faster and prettier than Firefox, even if the user interface takes a bit more effort. ;-)

Thanks for such a kickass browser, Dave.

It's looking pretty nice, except for the Google Maps issues that others have noted. I used the Safari bug reporter to send in a note/source/screenshot of that problem.

Posted by Peter at April 16, 2005 7:34 AM

Definitely much faster in Javascript over at the crisp database (http://crisp.cit.nih.gov/crisp/crisp_query.generate_screen), though queries still cause it to freeze for a few seconds (it used to freeze for about 10). Great improvement - thanks!

Posted by Gavin Sherlock at April 16, 2005 7:37 AM

So far, Safari 1.3 is a NICE release. I can really notice the speed improvements, some html rendering bugs I noticed seemed to have been smoothed out, have noticed better javascript support. Great browser!

One question I had: what does the HTML editing support really mean? I had assumed that this would be an approximation of Mozilla/FFox's MIDAS html editor technology. This enables me to use html editors like EPOZ -- a tool used in Plone and Zope.

However, I attempted to use Safari 1.3 with an EPOZ-enabled Plone site and was not able to get it to work. It simply isn't invoked at all.

Does this imply that Safari 1.3 does not yet fully support this functionality or that Epoz needs to be adapted to invoke Safari's capability?

thanks,

jeff

Posted by Jeff at April 16, 2005 7:43 AM

The HTML editing capabilities are either not working properly or the authors who write these editors are not coding them properly. For example, widgEditor (and all other WYSIWYG editors) don't appear to be working. The toolbar will display, but none of the buttons appear to be sending commands to the editor window. This is common behavior amongst all the editors I've tried.

Is there a way to run the new version of Safari along side previous versions on the same system, for web developers to ensure their sites work properly on all versions?

Posted by Steven Garrity at April 16, 2005 8:23 AM

Side note: when I visit your site from your RSS feed, I'm taken to an archive page that has no CSS styling whatsoever (no stylesheet in the source code). For example, this entry is on the page:

You might want to have a look at that.

Posted by brian w at April 16, 2005 8:41 AM

Wow, *speed*!
But, uh oh! I'm having a serious issue that I did not have before upgrading. I have a menu that uses xml http request to fetch content and display it in a div. The first time I fetch each of these documents, they display fine. The second time I request any of the documents, my request seems to be completely ignored...

Apple's own example doesn't work now, in the same manner: http://developer.apple.com/internet/webcontent/XMLHttpRequestExample/example.html

Posted by Alex R. at April 16, 2005 8:50 AM

Alex: This sounds exactly like the problem I posted about earlier. There are actually two related bugs:

1) Safari doesn't set req.status to a valid value.

2) Repeated requests are never sent to the server but instead served from a local cache even if the initial result is flagged as non-cacheable.

An ugly workaround for 1) is to add a test for req.status == undefined since other req members are still accessible. I haven't experimented with 2) but I guess making the URL unique (e.g. by adding ?foo=random_number) will ensure a cache miss and return the expected data.

Quick note regarding the maps.google.com bug. If you've got the debug menu enabled, change the User Agent to Internet Explorer 6.0, then visit Google Maps. The text layout is fixed, and the cartoon bubbles present the correct info. Here's a link to a screenshot: http://homepage.mac.com/jroby/google_maps_safari1-3.jpg.

I'd also like to confirm a couple of things: the XMLHttpRequestExample does act weird (It works at first, and then you get a javascript error saying something about malformed data) and the Acid2 Test doesn't look good at all, and downloads a text file with the "ERROR" text from the comment parsing error.

Cheers and great work!

Still no progressive GIF playing in 1.3 (and Tiger I guess). Is there any specific reason why animated GIFs always have to load 100% before displaying?

I have seen (and created) many websites that use animated gif to display for example previews of mobile games. Those are usually between 300 and 800KB. Both on the Firefox and the old IE, GIF animations starts playing ASAP while the download occurs in the background.

An example here.

If this could be done in some future version that'd be really really cool.

Posted by Jacques Lema at April 16, 2005 9:22 AM

Thanks Jonas. a quick test shows that requesting an url with a unique id (somepage.php?uid=) is a valid workaround. I'll experiment to find a better fix that I can add to the xml http JS function so I don't need to add that fix to each function call.
At least I'm no longer in panic mode here, hehe.

Dave, great work the past couple of days. I'm super-impressed.

The question is begged though, as we move further away from the earlier releases, and as presumably 2.0 won't be available for Panther, are there going to be ways to get multiple versions of Safari running side-by-side?

Hmmm. It looks like the update broke some Flooble javascript. Flooble's Expandable Content script uses language=javascript. Posted by Melissa at April 16, 2005 11:50 AM

the comments on xmlHTTPRequest "second call doesnt work" are all about caching in 1.3, and pertain to Flash as well.

the same effect of this change in 1.3 can be seen with the GameDay Flash display of live baseball games in progress on the mlb.com site.

the GameDay Flash object polls the mlb.com site at short intervals to retrieve pitch by pitch updates of games in progress (pitch 1- ball, pitch 2- foul, etc) and display these in real time. these pitch by pitch details are in a remotely fetched file that updates in real time on the mlb.com server.

but with Safari 1.3 only the locally cached version of this pitch count file is being polled by the Flash object, it would appear, so the display never changes from "pitch 1- ball" even though nine pitches may have been thrown to the current batter (check the activity window in Safari to reference the remote file content).

I think this is a serious flaw, and not just for baseball fans.

Thank you. Excellent work all the way around. Saddly, none of the WYSIWYG HTML editors I've tried (HTMLArea and TinyMCE) work out of the box. Hopefully someone can point to a tutorial on what's needed to do contentEditable in Safari.

Keep up the good work. We all appreciate it!

Posted by Ted Stresen-Reuter at April 16, 2005 12:28 PM

While this doesn't have anything to do with Safari's engine specifically, I have noticed that when downloading, one can no longer "Save File As..." and thus choose the download location or rename the file.

For all of 1.3's MANY steps forward, this seems like a big step back.

I seem to recall that back in 1.0, and maybe even 1.1, there was the same limitation, which was fixed by 1.2, and now changed back by 1.3.

It is a shame to enjoy Safari as much as I do, and have to switch to something else if I don't want my downloads automatically stuffed in one folder, and have to organize/rename them manually afterwards. Just my 2 cents on an otherwise perfect release!

While experimenting with contentEditable, I discovered that Comman+B and Command+I have the expected effect on an editable section: bold and italic. Oddly, however, the HTML that is generated includes spans with a class set to "Apple-style-span" and no additional formatting information.

Granted, providing what is essentially an XML editor in the context of a web page is not easy, at all, so it's hard to complain, but one of the things that most of us found irritating about IE was the amount of noise their editor would produce.

I trust that Apple will do everything it can to avoid doing the same, and I still think this is a great update and am THRILLED that it's available for Panther!

Also, and this is probably minor, there seems to be a 'focus' issue that needs to be overcome in order for buttons elsewhere on a web page to be able to change the HTML of the current selection of an editable element. Any pointers to tutorials on how to write for this engine would be greatly appreciated!

http://telly.bravo5.org/~blalor/test/test.html

I'm disappointed to hear that Safari 2 and 1.3 do not load and execute the script pointed to by a src attribute of a dynamically added node. The above is a link to a page containing a bookmarklet. Even without dragging the bookmarklet to the favorites bar, you should be able to click the link and get an alert saying "hello, world". This works in Firefox, and is the basis for more powerful bookmarklets.

I wouldn't be surprised to discover that there are some security implications with this, but it makes huge strides towards making the browser more of a platform than just an application.

Posted by blalor at April 16, 2005 1:21 PM

I don't think that the new behaviour is the right one with the following:

when having a fixed-positioned element, using

background: inherit;

in the css style, the text of the main page behind the fixed element is visible. I had to change this to

background: #EFEFEF;

(which is the color it inherits...) in order to block the content behind the element. Firefox and Safari 1.2 worked correctly with the inheritance but it is broken in Safari 1.3...

Take a look at:

http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/

(where the current css style does not use the inherit any longer since it looked wrong...)

http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/samples/browser/webediting/onepageeditor.htm

This page demonstrates the "focus" issue. Selecting text in the editable area and doing Command+B makes the selected text bold, but clicking one of the buttons deselects the text before executing the Bold command. Is there a known workaround or am I missing something?

"I am only getting background color on input tags though."

And I, oddly enough, am only getting proper background color on textareas, while inputs remain white. What's worse, the text color definitions are obeyed; on one of my sites, this makes the white text invisible. On IE6/Firefox, it's white text on a gray background; with Safari 1.2, it ignored styles and was usable with black text on white background. Now, it obeys the white text rule but has a white background to boot. Baaaah! And one day before site launch, too! Baaaah!

Other than effing up my program, it appears to be a great release. ;)

Ack! There's now a massive bug in the JavaScript method insertRow() where the row is always inserted at the top of tables no matter what the argument. I first saw this bug in an (internal) app of my own, but verified it on every insertRow() demo site I could find (example: http://www.mredkj.com/tutorials/tableaddrow.html).

Hi Dave,

Thanks for Safari 1.3. I'll check out all the new features soon enough. For now, here are some initial observations, bugs, etc.

1. Thank you for the improved JavaScript error messages. I still get a somewhat cryptic error message now and then, but at least the implicated object name is mentioned now.

2. While not part of any standard, except for perhaps DOM Level 0, I use the combination of the arguments and caller properties on called function objects recursively to get a nice and clean call stack. In JS-heavy sites this can be a great help. Unfortunately, Safari does not support the caller property. Moz/FF and IE(mac and win) support this. Please consider supporting this property.

I have put up a webpage illustrating how I use this:
http://www.xfinitegames.com/safari/callstack.html

3. As others have mentioned, the XMLHttpRequest object is broken. It does not define the status and statusText fields and Safari over-aggressively caches the results. This is rather unfortunate.

Also, Safari is still the only browser around that supports loading of data from other domains using XHR. Is this on purpose? I personally think it is very handy to be able to load data from other domains as it allows client-side calling of web-services on other servers, but the FF and IE teams seem to feel differently.

4. It is undisputed that Safari's JS engine is a lot faster than before, however in my own simple test page for measuring JS performance, Safari is still lagging considerably behind FF 1.03 and even IE/Mac 5.23. I posted this test before, it tests two methods of counting the nr. of 1 bits in a byte. On my lowly G4/500x2, I get the following times (shorter times are better: )

Firefox 1.03 - 3250ms and 1625ms
IE/Mac 5.23 - 4650ms and 2500ms
Opera 7.50 - 22650ms and 10725ms
Safari 1.3 - 23500ms and 11350ms

Safari is thus about 7 times as slow in completing this test as Firefox. Now, is this just a freak occurance? Is this test testing exactly what JSKit is bad at? The test really doesn't do anything strange. Should I file a bug for this? (Also, does Opera 7.5 use the JSKit?)

To perform the test and check out the source, go to the url mentioned below. WARNING: on Safari 1.2, this test will keep Safari blocked for a _long_ time.

http://www.xfinitegames.com/safari/bib.html

5. If I use the following css-code:

html { overflow: hidden; }

Safari will not draw the backgroundcolor or -image of a window and screen updates will be erratic (for example because of adjustments to styles and markup by scripts.)
Of course, the proper method to hide a scrollbar is to apply overflow:hidden to the body. But I included this rule in a page to actually make IE lose the vertical disabled scrollbar without having to resort to the scroll="no" attribute on the body tag.

To see what happens, go to the uri specified below and then resize the window around a bit. Needless to say, this is a bug.

http://www.xfinitegames.com/safari/overflow.html

6. I did a quick check on the objects Safari exports and saw that it now supports the XMLSerializer but not the DOMParser object. Can you give some details about Safari's implementation of these objects? I also saw that the load and loadXML methods on the Document class (from implementation.createDocument) are also not implemented. Too bad. Is there a way in Safari to create a Document in script from xml source? And are you guys planning on supporting XPathResult?

Anyway, thanks again for all the new features and thanks for working on making the Acid2 test work. I really hope that a fix for XMLHttpRequest's missing fields and caching behavior will be issued for 10.3 as that seems to be the most problematic.

Best regards, Arthur Langereis

Yep, the whole "open in tabs" thing kinda bugs me. I use this feature a lot as well as nested folders in bookmarks. Needless to say this causes problems under 1.3 and Tiger for me :-(

But like just about everything else I've seen :-)

Dave,

Looks like some nice improvements. One of the issues that I hoped was to be fixed in 2.0 (and seemingly 1.3) was the use of WYSIWYG editors like HTMLarea. I thought I read that this was a feature that was to be added. We use Moodle, and OSS Course Management System on 10.3 Server and it uses HTMLarea for WYSIWYG editing. Seems there was some discusion on the webcore-dev list about it back last fall.

http://lists.apple.com/archives/webcore-dev/2004/Oct/msg00005.html

What is the status on adding support for it?

Thanks! Tim

Dave,

One big fix for me! FifthThird Bank's online banking now allows me to transfer funds between acounts! It used to get to the confirmation page, but the page would not render correctly and there was no way to complete the transaction. I was forced to use Firefox or IE to be able to use all my online banking features.

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

For those of you having a crash exiting and closing tabs. REMOVE IGETTER integration (you can keep the app, just disable the integration). This solved it for me and some others. Check it in the application or just remove iGetterIMBundle from your library folder.

Appears as though 1.3 busted the "drag to reorder queue" that NetFlix offers in a sidebar after adding a new title. Worked well before, now it sorta works but ceases to after dragging the first title in the displayed queue to a new position.

Posted by NotFlix at April 16, 2005 4:59 PM

Tim -

Re: HTMLarea ... as far as I can tell, the project doesn't show a lot of get-up-and-go as a project (can't speak to Moodle), so even if Safari would be good to go for WYSIWYG editing now or in the near future, odds are that HTMLarea would likely not be updated to reflect that.

I could be wrong, but I haven't seen many signs of life for many months with regard to HTMLarea development. There's greater likelihood of other WYSIWYGs adding Safari support ... though that may not be of much help if Moodle is tied to HTMLarea and there's no way to wedge another editing interface in its place.

Congrats Dave, on your work so far. I know many JavaScripters will rejoice at the news of more DOM support and WYSIWYG editing. I'm endlessly impressed with the updates to Safari, keep up the good work.

I thought I'd read that HTTPS was faster. However, try this page in Safari:

https://eopen.microsoft.com/EN/default.asp

Activity monitor shows the CPU usage at 100% while the page (and any subsquent pages after logging in) loads.

Open the same pages in Firefox and the CPU load is much lower (and the pages load much faster).

US patent office image viewing is still broken. I've dutifully clicked the report bug to Apple button in every release of Safari I've used so far, and I'm just going to give up now.

Safari puts an extra vertical scroll bar down the middle of the page, no horizontal scroll bar, and you can only see about 1" of the image, which is absolutely gigantic (in visual appearance not file size)

To see an example:
go to www.uspto.gov, click search, then quick search. type in a search term, click on one of the results, then click the images button at top of page.

On the plus side,it looks like the maddening printing thing
(where the page to print was always auto resized and shoved in the upper left hand corner with a huge right and bottom margin ) may possibly be gone. I may be able to actually use the UPS and Fedex websites to print labels in Safari now. Won't be able to tell till I get back to work Monday and try to ship some stuff.

Not to whine incessantly...thanks to you and all the Safari team for your hard work. Wish all browsers played as nice with my HTML/CSS as Safari does.

Dave, I really have to protest Apple's decision -- if it was a purposeful one -- to disable the feed: protocol in Panther's Safari application.

Before, I could prepend "feed://" to a newsfeed's URL -- or many links on the Web already had that -- and it would automatically open in NetNewsWire. In fact, I had a nice little JavaScript that did it for me:

javascript
void
location.href='feed:'+location.href)

(Staggered out a little bit so that it's not filtered out, but you coudl piece it together.)

Now, I simply receive a message saying Safari in 10.3 can't handle newsfeed URLs -- I'll need 10.4 or later. I'm sorry, no disrespect meant, but bull, it was handling it fine before 1.3 came along.

Please, please, please have Apple issue a 'Security Update' or a Safari 1.3.1 patch that reverses this extremely unpleasant move.

Posted by Mike Harris at April 16, 2005 11:37 PM

Yes, it is much faster but I still am forced to use Firefox for one task that is critical to me - online billpay. The US Bank website will not let me log on with Safari to the billpay portion of my online account. Firefox has no problem with it, however, so that's what I use. But for this one problem, I'd be using Safari instead.

Posted by Rick at April 16, 2005 11:41 PM

well, this is cool and all, but do you guys plan on ever fixing that shockwave 3D bug that has been plaguing Safari since day one?

Also, what about the new popup windows scheme?

Posted by Nonoche at April 17, 2005 1:19 AM

new safari hangs if you enter just the domain name of a site, like in Command-L then enter "apple".... this makes sogudi useless, so im considering switching browser...

Posted by luki at April 17, 2005 1:35 AM

For the newsfeeds you can probably use IEmac or another programm that can adjust helper-apps to set "feed://" to netnewswire again.

i would rather see more discussion on contenteditable (and examples and why it uses apple-span-tags on cmb-B etc.) and other new stuff in the webkit (instead of issues people have with GUI/App with "Save to Desktop" and "newsfeed-links")

Posted by Anon at April 17, 2005 4:14 AM

Three more points:

A. XMLSerializer is broken. Creating an instance of it and passing a node in the current document to serializeToString() yields undefined. Also, serializeToStream is not implemented, but that doesn't really matter. Test URL below (works in Firefox, not in Safari.)

http://www.xfinitegames.com/safari/serializer.html

If you get this working, would you also please, unlike Moz/FF, respect the lower-caseness of xhtml tags in the serialized output?

B. When navigating over contentEditable elements using tab, there is no way using the keyboard to start editing the contents of an element unless the element contains no text at all. The focus ring is there, but typing, pressing space, enter or return doesn't start editing. I have to click the element with the mouse to get the insertion bar in place.

This is probably related to the fact that another commenter mentioned you couldn't "click" on buttons anymore by tabbing to them and hitting space. Proper keyboard navigation is vital to a large part of the "pro" user crowd. Please allow for mouseless control over the browser.

C. Minor standards nitpick, but Safari allows access to elements in script by referencing them by their id, like IE does. This is fine and all, but in standards mode this functionality really should be disabled.

I'll file bugs for all the things I've mentioned in my comments.

I'm a Chinese user. In Safari 1.3, I set default font as "Apple LiGothic" (one of apple's chinese font), and as I log in Gmail, Safari just stop working. I have to change to other fonts so I can use Gmail. But Gmail used to be OK with Apple LiGothic in Safari 1.2. Can you fix this problem? Many users in Taiwan and China have this problem.

Dave,

Great job well done! I am sure many others have already congratulated you for this.

I am also sure you have received a fair share of complaints. I am afraid I will have to add my bit to this category.

Input fields with black backgrounds do not show the blinking (literally speaking) cursor. Is that by design or a minor bug/annoyance?

I think I've already found a bug in v1.3. It deals with "Ajax" or javascripts XMLHttpRequest technique. I found it because it's wonked out some things on my site - in a nutshell if you visit something once, you can't reviisit it. Every other browser inclding Safari v1.2.5 works just fine. It seems to be some kind of caching type problem for lack of a better word.

Additionally, I found a similar problem over at ForgetFoo's site. You can't load the same link twice...

http://www.forgetfoo.com/?blogid=3436

or...try viewing the blog...same thing if you try to "Display Comments" more than once...

http://www.forgetfoo.com/?blogid=3593

I've reported this to Apple...

I really love safari 1.3 and I'm looking forward to 10.4!

Regarding speed: Safari 1.3 is definitely an improvement and incredibly fast on some type of sites.

Funny thing is, the new tiger site on apple.com loads very slow on safari compared to firefox. I'm here in europe on an adsl line (768/128) and compared both browsers by calling several links of this page. http://www.apple.com/macosx/

Safari takes between 30-56 sec for a complete load -
FF around 8-15 seconds.

Did anyone else notice this?

Posted by james at April 17, 2005 7:29 AM

Ack, been all over testing this bug out...if you enter the same search term twice it will fail the second time...sigh...once again this is the javascript XMLHttpRequest method failing here...using v1.3...

Surfing is much faster now but when I start Safari for the first time after boot it takes very, very long till it is loaded. Very strange and I'm, not the only one who encounters this prob.

Posted by Simo at April 17, 2005 10:35 AM

Breaking the feed:// protocol is a terrible idea. Please fix this or post a way to fix it.

Also, what's going on with the text selection? When I select some text that I'm reading now, it sort of selects the whole area. If you triple-click a line of text, you'll see it selects the whole line, even the blank space after the text ends. It's not bad, it's just different, and I was wondering why.

Thanks.

Posted by Trevor at April 17, 2005 1:09 PM

I'd like to echo a previous comment regarding the Safari bug that causes the wrong mouse position to be reported to the Macromedia Shockwave player plug-in.

Many of us who develop content in Shockwave, do so specifically because it is cross-platofrm and allows Macintosh access to our content.

However, this bug, present since the dawn of Safari, breaks all Shockwave content that involves mouselicks - which is no small percentage of that content.

Is there any chance that this will be remedied soon?

BTW - to all of those asking about web page editing - it is a feature for the framework, not for Safari itself.

I can now edit web pages graphically in my own apps, just by calling a method of the webView.

Basically, just:

[webView setEditable:TRUE];

And to allow you to drag images/etc into the page:
[webView removeDragCaret];

I dunno if this is a 1.3 bug or not, but I never noticed it before I downloaded 1.3 today... I've got a test site (see URL) that uses a fair bit of Mike Davidson's excellent sifr technique, and now Safari is cancelling the full load, which sometimes has no noticeable difference and other times completely hoses things?

Any ideas? If so, please drop me an email!

I've also noticed the new way of selecting an entire line, rather than just the text on a line. Is this the intended behavior?

Posted by Daniel Andrews at April 17, 2005 7:52 PM

So - there's only a slight mention of it in another comment, but why isn't there "click" support of the label tag yet? I'd think this would be high on the list of things to do. It's not so annoying on the text inputs but it's SUPER annoying on checkboxes and radio buttons. And I did actually just double-check, the Finder supports this kind of functionality (at least with checks and radios)...

All the other stuff is great, by the way.

Hey Dave,

Awesome work on the new release. I just have one quick remark about the XSLT support. Safari seems to bungle up entities included in XSLT stylesheets so that they lose their entity-ness in the final document. For example, trying to include a left-double-quote character (“) and a right-double-quote character (”) )in an XSLT stylesheet gets mangled in the output; Mozilla and its cousins don't seem to have this problem. For an example of what I'm talking about, take a look at http://www.fivevoltlogic.com/bin/safarixslt.png .

But that's a relatively minor bug.

Dave

Posted by Dave at April 17, 2005 9:42 PM

Dave, Eug at http://everythingapple.blogspot.com noticed that Test 7 from the BenchJS test always shows 'Friday'. I just tested with Safari 1.2x and 1.3, and both exhibit the problem. Firefox on the PC runs the script as expected, so it would appear that there is some kind of bug (or difference in interpreting bad code) in Safari's JavaScript handling.

Posted by Squozen at April 17, 2005 9:42 PM

I've found that Safari doesn't always jump to named anchors given in the URL when loading pages. And when it does it can then lead to a problem where images load in the page above the named anchor and push the rest of the page down, losing the anchor point.

This problem is especially noticeable in vbulletin forums where regular browsers will use the "jump to first new post" link often. Half the time it doesn't seem to bother going to the anchor point, and when it does, thumbnails and other images can lengthen the page as they load, thus you lose the place.

I'm thinking the basic problem is something to do with Safari's new desire to display content sooner than it used to - perhaps before the named anchor has actually loaded.

I've reported both issues using Safari's bug-submit button.

I do hope there is another version of Safari 1.3 before it is orphaned.

Cheers.

I like it that I can see my download speed (in kb/s) and the remaining time simultaneously in the download list. Ignoring the disorientation caused by changing some of the hotkeys around, this update is totally fabulous.

Posted by matty at April 18, 2005 12:21 AM

Your guess is correct Duncan. There is indeed a regression with named anchors caused by the faster display model.

Posted by hyatt at April 18, 2005 2:26 AM

Howdy,

I've reported this using the Bug button in Safari, but I thought I'd mention here just in case. :)

Safari 1.3 seems to have introduced a bug in dealing with CSS opacity. I've made a test-case page at my site which illustrates the problem. Adjusting the opacity of an image by using the :hover pseudo-class causes problems when the image is also floated. The image actually disappears, and re-appears and re-disappears as you move your mouse.

Nice work. Inline pdfs (and wmvs) previously generated a webcore domain error while loading (even though pdf did eventually load). This is now fixed.
However, some javascript favlets (eg. technorati this!) no longer work as the code that parses the current URL string to construct the new URL passes null data.

I still get the cursed spinner while tab loading about 25 blog links. Can prefetch/URL timeouts be tweaked so that Safari gives control back even if it can't immediately connect to a URL?

I am glad that XSLT is now supported but I ran into a problem with the XPath document() function.

The XSLT/XPath document() function is rather badly broken in Safari. This prevents the loading of the configuration XML into the XSLT. This can be seen in test #3 at http://svn.sinz.com:8000/browser-tests/test3.html

Note that test #2 shows some style problems and the link in the banner goes to the wrong place but otherwise works: http://svn.sinz.com:8000/browser-tests/test2.html

See the spec on XPath document() function.

Er, no, you can't. Safari 1.3 ignores the system setting on handling of the feed: protocol.

As a real estate agent, I cannot do my work without interacting with our Multiple Listing Service (MLS) several times a day, each and every day. Here in the state of Washington, the Northwest Multiple Listing Service has chosen Rapattoni as the website vendor (they provide websites to MLSes throughout the country). Unfortunately, once you log in to the site using Safari - or any other Mac web broswer other than the last version of MSIE for Mac OS X - you cannot pull down the script-driven menus. And yes, I just tried it using the latest 1.3 release. Like I said, I continue to use MSIE 5.2.3 for Mac OS X, but since this is no longer supported by Microsoft, I see the day when Rapattoni makes a change and even that browser will no longer work, and then I'll have to ditch my Mac and switch to a PC, which I really don't want to do (I have Virtual PC, but it is way too slow, and besides, if I have to use that program, I might as well get a computer that runs Windows).

I would be happy to send you any screen snapshots or HTML code to see if you can figure it out.

hi there,

not sure if this is the place to report a bug.

in the new 1.3 version, percentage heights on tables do not work if you have a doctype with an url in it.

dreamweaver for example makes by default: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"

if you remove the link: "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd" it all works perfect...

cheers, and thanks for your work... I love safari !

to get "Save Image As..." or "Download Linked File As..." you can do the following:

  1. Control-click on the link.
  2. Press the option key (the menu item will change from the save on desktop version to the save as version) and click the menu item.

Yes, you'll need to use two different modifier keys (unless you use a two-button mouse) but you don't have to hold them down .. just hold control during the first click and option during the second click. Note that using the option key to get alternate menu items has been standard on the Mac for a long time. (try pressing/releasing option while the Finder's File menu is open, for example.)

Too bad more web developers don't sign up for the ADC Select program. For $500/year they could have these new releases a few months early and find these bugs before release. (I have a subscription through work, so I've been playing with Safari 1.3 and 2.0 for the last few months. I'm not doing any serious web stuff though, so I hadn't found many bugs to report.)

My guess, based on past Apple behavior is that honest-to-goodness regression bugs will have a decent chance of getting fixed in a Safari 1.3.1 update for 10.3.9. Apple tends to take regressions pretty seriously and hasn't been shy about getting updates out for them.

However, long standing bugs/omissions that didn't make the 1.3 cut will likely not be in a 1.3.1. Likewise any NEW reports of bugs in 1.3 that were also in 1.2 likely won't make a 1.3.1 cut.

And finally user interface changes (wow, how many people can complain about the Download Linked File/Save File As... change? Amazing! Press the option key folks!) probably have very little chance of getting changed.

And I bet both changes (View source hot key and wanting a Save File As... option without the option key) could both be easily added by just editing the nib :)

Bryan - regarding complaints on "Download linked file/as" (I have one!): no, it's not that hard, *if you know to do it*! I didn't see any info on that change in any of the change lists. The option just appeared to be gone. I spent days casually searching for more info before I found the answer. In the meantime I was seriously tempted to give up on Safari and go back to Firefox. I have really mixed feelings about the way Apple always hides power options like this. On one hand I'm glad they exist, but discovering them can be difficult.

Great work on the new Safari.

One area that needs to catch up to others is cookie privacy. Safari badly needs an option that accepts all cookies as session cookies. On today's internet that is the only cookie privacy option that really makes sense... you really can't just say 'no' to cookies across the board. Only an option to accept, but discard cookies automatically at the end of the session allows users to avoid storing on-machine cookies but still successfully interact with the web.

"To open RSS feeds in Safari, you need Mac oS X 10.4 or newer."

That's such bullshit. I don't want to open the feed in Safari, I want to open it in NNW, just like I was able to with 1.2!

Posted by anonymous coward at April 18, 2005 1:18 PM

Don,

I don't know... the option key has been used for a loooong time to provide additional behavior on the mac. I routinely press the option key in menus to discover additional functionality in a wide variety of apps. I guess I'm so used to it that I didn't think twice to press the option key when I didn't see the Save As.. item.

But, the issue of Apple not fully documenting changes in updates IS very annoying. In the System 7/8/9 days they used to at least publish detailed tech notes of all the changes in each update, now users and developers are left to discover these changes on their own. That's unfortunate.

Bwana, the manpage displayer, is now at version 1.6 (at http://www.bruji.com) and works with Safari 1.3's new JavaScript implementation.

Posted by John Baltutis at April 18, 2005 2:06 PM

One thing that's very annoying about the new Safari 1.3 is that you can't change tabs when you have the focus in a single-line editfield. I can understand disabling Command-Shift-Arrow when you're in a multi-line field so that you can select a line at a time, but when you have a single line editfield, the chances of using Command-Shift-Arrow to select text are about nil.

The result is that with Safari 1.3, I can't type a search and immediately go to the next tab (where something is already loaded).

Perhaps a compromise would work: Command-Shift-Tab would switch to the next tab if a text field has the focus but another page is already being loaded. So if I type a search into Google and hit Enter, I can then press Command-Shift-Tab to go to the next tab.

The Yahoo Search Tabs displayed along the top portion of the Yahoo frontpage no longer are displayed with the updated Safari 1.3. These search tabs are very usefull, but now are no longer available with Safari.

Moreover, right clicking to download a file "Download Linked File As..." whereby presenting a Save dialogue box is simply common sense. Please give this feature back to users (without making us use the option key as well). Why else would a user control click on the link to do the same as just clicking on the link to automatically download to common a download folder. This option gives the user control to specify a different name and also a different location.

This change was a HUGE step back, and this way of doing things simply goes against common sense. Users must be giving an option to change the name and location to download a file when right-clicking or control clicking to download a file.

I can't access the Bookmark manager without Safari 1.3 crashing. Dragging a bookmark out of the bookmark bar also crashes the app… I've activated the debug menu with Safari Enhancer, so I've been able to export my bookmarks, but is Safari Enhancer actually the culprit here? TIA

Posted by Krapster at April 18, 2005 2:38 PM

As a programmer I use command-shift arrow keys to select text ALL the time. So I welcome that particular change :)

"Users must be giving an option to change the name and location to download a file when right-clicking or control clicking to download a file."

I just love the irony! You want the option? OK, press the option key ;)

The Bookmarks need to Open in Tabs only the sites in them, not the sites in subfolders within a Bookmark. This is imperative! Having subfolders is nearly the whole point of having folders, but opening up every single thing inside every single folder just wastes time. Subfolder-by-subfolder is how it used to work and how it ought to work. What can we do to fix this?

Posted by Carl Caputo at April 18, 2005 3:46 PM

For some odd reason, the Safari 1.3 update cause Safari to render Yahoo.com to its old version. The Search Tabs are no longer visible, instead is the old style pop-up menu.

These Search Tabs were just recently visible to Mac users. Before only WinIE users displayed the tabs, but since Yahoo updated its front-page, Mac users got the luxury of displaying these very useful tabs.

But now with the update of Safari 1.3, Mac users can no longer display the very intuitive Search Tabs on the Yahoo front page.

Please fix Safari 1.3, Mac users miss the Yahoo Search Tabs!

Why was the ability to right-click on an image and choose a folder to save the image to removed? This powerful feature should immediately be restored. I can't believe that removing this feature from Safari was purposely done!

Great to see Safari get some support all the way until Tiger's release. But I was wondering one thing: What's the word on keyword searches? I heard some rumblings that it was going to make its way into Safari eventually. It's currently the only feature which makes me want to use FireFox over Safari, and it'd be nice to see it in Safari. And for those who are thinking of recommending Sogudi, I already have it, and it's just a bit too hard to use when you encounter any kind of slightly advanced search engine.

I've noticed a bug in the new canvas code. The bezierCurveTo method on the 2d drawing context ignores it's last two arguments; looking at the code posted at http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/WWDC2004/WebCore-146.1/khtml/ecma/kjs_html.cpp , it appears to be a copy and paste coding error. In the following code, you should be accessing arguments 4 and 5, rather than 1 and 2 again.

float cp1x = (float)args[0].toNumber(exec);
float cp1y = (float)args[1].toNumber(exec);
float cp2x = (float)args[2].toNumber(exec);
float cp2y = (float)args[3].toNumber(exec);
float x = (float)args[2].toNumber(exec);
float y = (float)args[3].toNumber(exec);

Crash Safari 1.3 without Java

I don't have any wierd whacko wicked Safari plugins or Safari add-ons or haxies or nothin'. Just a close to vanilla OS X 10.3.9 and Safari 1.3.

I can crash Safari predictably by going to wild360.com and clicking on the "More" button.

I've tried removing the sIFR Flash stuff on that page and Safari still crashes.

The crash is a Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)\
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000\

I've tried re-installing 10.3.9 (Combo) and then applying the Security Update 2005 02. Still crashes. Can anyone else get this crash? Any ideas what I can do to work around this until Safari is fixed?

Well I like most aspects of the update bu still have some bugs in table/css when working with td's colspan attribute.

If i set the width of the header's column to an fixed value and let span it over 3 columns then all these 3 columns use the same width as specified and don't divide the width by 3 (like Opera and mozillas does).

I must set the width to the expected width of the 3 spanning columns to fix this.

this causing me to write a browser switch in php or whatever.

I had stopped using Safari for Gmail in favor of FireFox (while still using Safari for other tasks, mainly because of .Mac bookmark sync between my Macs). there's one more issue with css on table elements:

i use to take advantage of elements like in more complex tables, in order to give it a certian scructure as well as applying certain design elements via css, like background-colors. unfortunately safari still seems to not display e.g borders to such structural elements. that's a pity, because it's a good/common way to seperate e.g the thead from the tbody in certain layouts. it's the same issue with tr elements, too, by the way.

finally, i'm not so very sure if the fathers of css intented structural table elements to be styled with backgrounds and borders, but on the other hand in don't find anything in the w3c css specification negotiating that ... after all that is much closer to the cascading idea behind the style sheets, than creating extra classes to be applied to certain table cells.

by the way, there's a feature i looooove!!!!!!! even if it's not only new in 1.3: the implementation of css 'text-shadow'!!! great effect! too bad that the css-specification is missing a corresponding 'box-shoadow' ...

Hi,

Not sure this is a 1.3 regression, but when doing a submit button only 30px wide with a 0px border the standard Aqua widget is used, so the rounded corners is causing the button to only have the label "O" instead of "OK"... that ain't good... Very nice, but one by me occassionally posted (Safari Feedback) behaviour hasn't changed since 1.2. I cannot remember if previous versions of Safari also react like described.

Intensely surf eBay. Open several dozen tabs (I browse a list and Cmd-click the interesting items to look at them in detail later). Then I close the tabs again to get another load of new tabs, all night long.

Safari after a while gets *very* slowly on my iBook G4 and shows the spinning ball very often. Other windows of Safari are also "dead" until the pages have loaded. It remembers klicks so far but it's a bit confusing.

The interesting part is that Safari slowly eats all available memory. After surfin' eBay a hour or two, it get's really painful. 768MB RAM get full and my iBook starts to swap. Inactive memory is a huge percentage according to Activity Monitor.app. Closing Safari windows, waiting for some cache to expire, nothing helps but closing Safari itself, reopening and starting over.

This should be no rant, please. Safari is still my Browser of Choice. It's lightning fast (with eBay for the first 30 Minutes :-) ), it load's seemingly all pages I surf to, it's small, it has a nice look and it's somehow symphatic. If this Bug (?) can and would be fixed somewhen, I'd be the happiest person on earth ;-)

Thanks for reading so far.

After applying the 10.3.9 update, Safari now has a contextual menu that is screwed up. Specifically, when bringing up the CM on a live link, the first, third, and fifth items in the menu all say the same thing:

"localized string not found"

The second item still correctly works -- "Open Link in New Tab"
and the fourth as well -- "Add Link to Bookmarks..."

I am about to reinstall the Java update and the Security update that have been mentioned all over the web as possible problem-solving fixes, but I just wanted to post this as a heads up. I'll report back shortly as to the success or not of re-applying those updates. Did I mention this is a pain and a hassle?

Posted by Scott Elliott at April 20, 2005 11:09 PM

Well, no change. Was not allowed to re-install the Java update, and although the Security Update did allow for reinstallation the installer announced that 0 KB was needed for that install. Rebuilt prebindings, ran Panther Cache Cleaner, ran maintenance scripts, repaired permissions...

Any suggestions?

The actual screwed-CM items still work, it's just the "localized string not found" is what shows when accessing the contextual menu.

Posted by Scott Elliott at April 21, 2005 12:47 AM

I noticed that the property list file format for Bookmarks and History changed from xml plist to binary plist. Oddly enough, I was working on a Cocoa app that uses Safari's bookmarks and history files, around the same time that I applied the 10.3.9 update...for a short bit I thought I'd blown it and corrupted the files somehow. I'm wondering if this was intentional and if so, why? Just curious -- I mean, obviously it doesn't matter to a user of an NS- or CFDictionary which format the file is serialized as but it may matter to someone doing text filters or incremental backups to a text file or some such thing -- something I've messed with myself from time to time. So intentional or 'oops'?
And, it seems like most of OS X's plist files are xml. Is this changing system wide, i.e. are more plists going binary? Anyone?
Otherwise, so far so good. And it's fast!

There are a lot of great features and fixes here! Congrats! However, there's one bug that has been with Safari since the beginning and 1.3 doesn't fix it.

I do presentations for clients of web app forms and the like. Oftentimes I print the forms on paper so we can do iterative design changes in meetings. However, when you print pages with form elements (buttons, pulldown menus, etc.) via Safari, the printouts show these elements way mangled. I'd really like to be able to print via Safari because of the other UI niceness, but the form elements are much too ugly to let me do it. Is this fix doable? I know it may sound minor, but the web professionals I've talked to find this really annoying and inconsistent with Apple's general pattern of great visuals. Thanks!

Posted by John Cady at April 21, 2005 10:40 AM

Why I don't use Safari...

For me, the big thing missing in Safari is "Auto-Detect" for "Text Encoding" as in Firefox/Mozilla. Without this feature it is difficult to view Japanese (and I assume other languages like Chinese). As far as I can tell, Safari only switches to Japanese encoding if the page is marked as such. Unfortunately this is very often not the case. Safari requires manually changing the encoding (to one of four possible choices!).

I hope this gets to someone at Apple.

Posted by Dave at April 22, 2005 6:47 AM

It's barely noticeably faster on our machine, where 1.2 was gowing ever pokier -- although still as good as any browser we've run. OTOH, the box is a G4/400 with about 444 megs of RAM running 10.3.9 (obviously). Is that is? Is the machine just too %$#@ing old?

Posted by Mitchy at April 23, 2005 1:14 AM

My comments are more of a "me too" than anything else, but since I don't see any replies to the ones above, I'll chime in too:

1) Adding proper-undo (*multiple* undo even!) in web forms text boxes is awesome... But losing the ability to switch tabs while in a text box is a *major* drawback. Smart tab shortcuts was one of the few things that was keeping Saf ahead of FF for me lately (FF's cumbersome shortcuts to change tabs just aren't nice)... Please an effort (or an easy way to customize that)...

2) As Kurt mentions above, when it comes to dealing with non-US encoding (I only have first-hand experience with Japanese and Latin ones, but these are striking), Safari is really sub-par. While it is probably the fault of the website itself most of the times, it is just too common an occurrence (website assuming their browser either detect the proper encoding or uses the good one by default) to ignore it...

Thanks for all the great work otherwise!

i love it! especially after upgrading to tiger. i'm very happy with the RSS feeds, and i'm now using safari as my main RSS reader. No easy feat, I was tracking 60 feeds and some were frequent updaters. great job!

my first enhancement request (i'm such an ingrate!) would be to allow me to sort the feed so 'new' items show up first. right now i sort by date and use the coloring scheme to find new items, but I'm packing 20 feeds into a single bookmark folder and loading them all at once. So often items i've already read show up before items that are new, because the blogs and news feeds have different time stamps or post items with slightly older dates.

i know it's a nit, but if you can add that to the long list of small tweaks to the UI I'm guessing it would be a good enhancement for folks beyond me as well.

thanks again, you did a tremendously great job with this release. i really am grateful and in awe!

hello everybody.

First of all I have to admid that I didnt upgrade to 1.3 yet - since my system's not fresh enough..

I'm just about to cry about an issue with Safari 1.3 vs. Frames: I have this type of frameset with a content frame in the very middle, which should be scrollable only horizontally.. no need for vertical scrollbars. But it seems that Safari 1.3. adds vertical scrollbars - no matter what I do against it - and then "forgets" about them after a reload.
Is this a known bug..? Does anyone know a workaround for this..?

thanks a lot! greetz, till.

I don't know if comments from an end user, instead of a developer, are welcome here, but here goes. I use Safari as my main browser every day. When Apple first adopted KHTML, customers worried about compatibility problems, since most Web sites are designed first for Internet Explorer, and every other browser sometimes apperas to be an afterthought. All too often, Web sites are not tested for Mozilla compatibility, much less Safari.

With each new release of Safari, the problem has grown worse, and some new Web site incompatibility always seems to rear its ugly head. Early versions did not work well with the many bank bill paying sites and it took nearly two years to get most of the problems sorted out. That is unacceptable.

Now, Safari v1.3 in OS X (10.3.9) and Safari 2.0 in OS X (10.4) broke Blockbuster.com's movie Account Management.

I don't know what the cause of the communications and coordination problems are between Apple and the KHTML community, but you ought to get them fixed and remember that first and foremost, the major concern for end users is compatibility with as many Web sites as possible. Thank goodness we have Firefox to see us through these never-ending compatibility issues - without it, Mac users would be in trouble.

It's time for the young Apple and the KHTML development community to grow up and make compatibility Job 1.

I hope apple can do sth about it. it is really a nightmare of this update. I cant work on my own mac and have to switch to other computer.

Can somebody tell me why safari has so much trouble handling anchors. not only in 1.3.

He cant handle anchors inside a div with overflow: auto.

apple should have taken the gecko engine so the problems for webdevelopers would have been a bit smaller.

i know the world looks much brighter with hundreds of browsers.

greets neil

Re: Scott with 'I am not seeing getComputedStyle working in Safari 2.0/412'

Yes, I'm seeing the same thing.

Despite the claim that 'DOM methods like getComputedStyle are now supported.' they're not.

And whats worse is that when you try and detect if getComputerStyle is available, Safari says it is, but its not actually available when you try and get the property of some object.

For the newly introduced HTML Editing to be really useful, there would need to be support added for executing CreateLink, InsertImage and the like. Until then, there won't be any Rich Text Editing in Webmail or in Content Management Systems. Is this being worked on?

FRUSTRATED ... WITH THE BOUNCING SAFARI ICON OFF OF THE DOCK?

DAVID

I DO HOPE YOU COME ACROSS THIS POST BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE HAS BEEN ABLE TO HELP ME OUT

I'M RUNNING A POWER PC G4 QUICKSILVER 733 MHZ WITH 1.5 GB OF RAM

I HAVE OS X (10.3.9) INSTALLED ...WHEN I UPGRADED FROM (10.3.8) I WAS UNABLE TO USE SAFARI (1.3). I HAD TO REINSTALL SAFARI [1.2 (V125)]
THE PROBLEM I WAS HAVING WITH SAFARI (1.30 WAS THE FOLLOWING...

WHEN I TRIED TO OPEN SAFARI FROM THE DOCK ALL I GOT WAS A BOUNCING SAFARI ICON THAT WOULD BOUNCE FOR A SHORT WHILE THEN STOP I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO OPEN WHAT I THINK IS SAFARI 1.3! ALL I GET IS A BOUNCING SAFARI ICON...
AND YES I AM VERY FRUSTRATED!

IN FACT FIREFOX IS STARTING TO LOOK GOOD...DIDI I SAY THAT?

CAN YOU OR FOR THAT MATTER ANYONE OUT THERE SOLVE THIS ISSUE FOR ME?
