Comments: Abu Ghraib and American upbringing

Having worked at a summer camp while i was a teenager and into my early 20's. I can tell you that it is true that there are many children growing up in America that are being abused by others, or are being the abuser.

But, i think its important to note that people do try to change that. We have many many diffrent organization that do not tolorate that type of behavior and do try to help children grow up into honest, careing, respectful and responsibly adults.

Maybe the images of our soliders abusing Iraqis should be used in ads to help promote youth programs. If you dont want your child growing up to be like that, send them to a YMCA summer camp!

My basic point is that if you are outraged by the images from the prison in Iraq. If you are outraged by stories like the hellmouth series on slashdot. Then a good way to work aginst this trend in american culture is to help programs like 4H, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, YMCA, Youth sports, ect... None of those programs are prefect, and there are people there that teach the wrong things, but overall they are good, teach good values, and every one of us can help.

Your post mirrors the pessimistic things I've been saying for some time. I know many people who are decent, compassionate, even altruistic. But I really fear that the ugly face of our country, as reflected in our government, our big business, and the behavior of our representatives overseas, is not an aberration forced on us, but a very real mirror of who we are as Americans. I kept fooling myself for years with the conceit that, if the truth would out and Bush/Reagan/Nixon/My Lai/you name it were exposed for what they were, the American people would rise and put all to right.
Now I think these creatures hang on and thrive in spite of everything because they ARE us, and they are exactly where most of us want them to be...in power and ruining the world.

Rather a disturbing post, Chris, but true. Bowling for Columbine made me nearly sick.

When you are on the road, and you need a car rental, you shoudl be able to choose one that you enjoy driving. You should be able to gind a rental car that doesn't leave your wallet empty. The car rentals agency should be helpful and courteous. Last but not least, the car rental should be dependable, affordable, and fun.
