Comments: Cut-scenes and Save Points

When are you going to put cut-scene skipping into safari? :D

Why don't you go get yourself a great big steaming cup of Shut the Fuck Up? :)

I agree, it can be irritating, the reason why they don't place save points after some tough boss fight is because if you save, your helth is raised, and sometimes the developers want you to stay just s you are left by the tough boss.About the cut-scenes, well they proabably make them unskippable so that you follow the story, but I do agree that the game should let you skip cut-scenes which you have already seen, but then it would have to save everytime after a cut-scene.

Can't you pause in the middle of cutscenes in FFX though? I really like that feature. That way if I have to answer the phone or listen to the wife bitch about something in the middle of a cutscene, I don't miss anything. :)

No, you can't pause at the middle of cut-scenes. At least as far as I remember, it's been a long time since y last played it. I'm really waiting forward to see FFX-2.

The cut-scenes near the end didn't bother me that
much (although that mini-game did) because I really beat the crap out of the final boss. But the one before the fight with Yunalesca is a bitch because I had trouble beating her. I had to sit thru that corny cut-scene several times. Actually these cut scenes aren't too bad compared to Xenogears. (I don't remember if Xenogears allows you to skip cut-scenes though.)

That's exactly why I find Onimusha annoying...

Posted by Bob at March 18, 2003 2:13 PM

nano - exactly. I'm at Yunalesca now, I've sat through the cut-scene several times (albeit a few months ago), and I'm not doing it again until I get Holy (which requires about 6 more levels for Yuna, something I've been meaning to do for a few months now)

In Halo it's quite inconsistant. Most cut-scenes it lets you skip thru, but not all of them. We found it very annoying when my friend and I were trying to finish the game in under three hours (after 4 tries we missed it by 13 minutes, and then gave up).

Death to all cutscenes. I HATE cutscenes. I know, I have no appreciation of plot in a game, but most of them don't have one worth following.

Square has always been notorious for placing save points in places that suck. I remember cursing at the save point in Final Fantasy II (US) where I had to walk through a door and some other crap to get to the final boss... encountering several energy chipping fights along the way.

I agree that FFX is the WORST save point wise. That freaking game can take forever and it's practically impossible to figure out what's going on the first time that you do it. Totally pointless...

As for cutscenes, nothing can beat the collosal wastes of time that are in Metal Gear Solid 2. You can skip them though. Konami 1 Square -2

The "collosal wastes of time that are in Metal Gear Solid 2" are most of the game :-D

If you're really good you can probably run through the entire playable parts of the game in under three hours by skipping every cut scene.

However, I like the series because of it's blend of cinema and interaction but as a stand alone game it's rather boring.

FF8 was really bad for the "Save point" issue as well. between that and the ridiculously slow speed at which your characters walked around on the map...

actuall, FF8 was just a really bad game overall.

Best. Comment. Ever.

my boss actually came over to my desk to see what i was laughing at.

If you're going to make up rules for cutscenes, I'd like to suggest that cut scene should be unskippable the first time, then skippable thereafter.

Although it's annoying to be forced to sit through them, it's equally annoying to miss a bit of critical information because you bump the X button.

Sandy McMurray - most of us will probably agree that's the best way, but that also requires a "special" save right after the cutsceen, saving the fact that you watched it, which simply isn't very feasible with the long save times most consoles have (although I've noticed that, at least with Super Smash Bros. Melee, the GameCube saves /really/ quickly, so maybe it would be possible with GC)

What might work, though, is hitting X would show a dialog that says "Are you sure you want to skip this cutscene?" with X being yes and Square being no (or something like that, depending on the game/console)
