Nice link for the Camino. But at least Chimera made me think of one of my favourite cars...to be found at http://www.tvr.co.uk/intro.html, you need to work a bit but look under virtual showroom and you'll see a variant spelling of the name... vroom, vroom, beep, beep...Perhaps Cerbera would be a good name...
Anyway enough cars, this is about web browsers;-)

Posted by Nick at February 18, 2003 12:33 AMThat's a problem with names they can mean anything in any language, what can be good in one can be really bad in the other, that's life, deal with it.
Posted by Shadow3333 at February 18, 2003 1:18 AMWhen I think about "Camino", I just remember those cheap Honda motorcycles that were popular among european teens in the early 90ies...
See it here : http://student.iu.hio.no/~s97936/moped/
These were often "tuned" with custom exhaust tubes or any other cheesy stuff but they always made an awful lot of noise...
That's why i think it's terrible name for a browser :)
Posted by Xavier at February 18, 2003 1:35 AMExactly the same for me. (Thanks Xavier I was looking for a picture of an Honda Camino.)
This really worst than an El Camino!
Terrible name.
Posted by Azark at February 18, 2003 3:44 AMCamino is an Ugly name.
Chimæra was nice.
I second Cerbera - Only because I used to have one!
Perhaps Tuscan or Tamora!
Alas - they are definitely going with Camino (ugh!)
Posted by Diggory Laycock at February 18, 2003 4:57 AMsure, he SAID no suggestions, but what did he expect? telling everyone NOT to and then providing them with a comment link just below...
i bet the turnout was better (proportionately, out of his readership) than an election. with the number of faithful users of that browser, you can't expect not to get feedback when posting an article like that. people just want to help!
camino is a strange name for it, and i keep thinking of the car when i hear it. which is probably not the best thing.
also, with all this idle time before the 0.7 release waiting on a name, have they been able to develop it further? or is it in the same state as it originally was if the delay hadn't occured? basically, have they used the time constructively, or is it not that simple.
Posted by mangoduck at February 18, 2003 5:33 AM<scream in pain? Camino? You are kidding me, right?
Posted by Chris at February 18, 2003 6:03 AMYou have GOT to be kidding me!

Posted by franCk at February 18, 2003 6:19 AMwait a minute here! apple has a browser named safari and you're picking on camino? perspective people, perspective. camino means path which is very fitting for a browser name. besides, its a kick ass browser ... who cares about the name. most will still call it chimera or navigator anyway. safari, on the other hand ...
Posted by D Gallagher at February 18, 2003 7:02 AMI've already suggested it elsewhere, but I thought it would amusing (although silly) to call the thing:
Tabula Aqua
Posted by Jonathan King at February 18, 2003 7:10 AMI like Camino- it reminds me of the Russian (and other languages, I'm told) word Kamin, meaning fireplace.
Posted by Adam Atlas at February 18, 2003 7:14 AMI always liked 'Chimera' because it reflected what the browser really was: an unlikely conglomeration of numerous parts. I wonder if ChimerIcon and ChimeraKnight will be renamed.
As for me, I'll call it 'that browser that used to whip the llama's ass, before Safari came out.' ;)
Just for the record that picture is for a Chevelle not an El Camino. Also for the record I used to have a SS 396 Chevelle that would blow everything else off the road. I went on a road trip across the country and beat anyone tht wanted to run in a stock SS 396 Chevelle. The El Camino has the same capabilities. It is /was an awesome car.
Posted by Tarlach at February 18, 2003 9:25 AMWeird. When I think of Camino, I always think of this.

Posted by Brad at February 18, 2003 1:28 PMWhat is up with all the people dissin' on El Caminos? I had a GMC Caballero (their version of Chevy's El Camino) with a 350 V8 in it and I consistently whooped on any Honda (or otherwise) driver that cared to test their skills against me. Right now I'm driving an Acura Integra and I miss the days of putting the pedal to the floor in my '78 Diablo ;)
"Camino" is a great name, in my opinion. What in God's name is a "Chimera" anyway? Sounds like some little fuzzy animal that bites your ankles when you're visiting Central America.
Posted by Bernie at February 18, 2003 2:11 PMI don't think it's necessary to bag on Chimera. Camino is a respectable name and Chimera is a respectable browser and a good example of why Mozilla needs to pare way down and concetrate on nothing more than a browser. However, Camino is going to be slightly late as Safari is proving to be a very adept and well-implemented piece of software.
Posted by pb at February 18, 2003 3:24 PMI am so confused! The link displayed the image of a 1969 Yenko Chevelle. Let's see, from the factory, the car had up to a 425 hp 427 cubic inch V8 powerplant. These things weren't just "fast", they were "I'm squashed back into the seat under several G's of acceleration" fast.
Now, if we were talking "Chevette", then I could understand ;
Maybe if *someone* did their research before naming Chimera there wouldn't be this problem now. ;-)
Posted by Jeff at February 18, 2003 4:14 PMI find Camino a funny name....in italian it means "fireplace", but it could be even be "walk" in spanish (in italian to mean "walk" it would be "Cammino").
Yes isn't a speedy name, but well Safari..... :) And Camino is more funny... :) in my imagination i see "Camino" like a big and a bit stupid metal giant, with a a big heart, friend of the childs.... well i smoke too much tonight :))
this is a joke... right? Camino?
oh Lord. Marketing people you are not.
Posted by bitfactory at February 18, 2003 6:20 PMHyatt, whatever you say your weblog groupies will follow you. Nice way of giving the competing product negative press :).
I'm half kidding.
Posted by Jeff at February 18, 2003 7:23 PMCamino was the planet of the cloners in Attack of the Clones. So I guess the creators of Chimera consider themselves to be cloners...?
Posted by Scott Lahteine at February 18, 2003 7:39 PMAt least people will know how to spell *and* pronounce Camino.
Posted by John at February 18, 2003 10:11 PMCamino?
Doesn't anyone watch 'Attack of the Clones'??? Yeah, I know, it's not worth watching, but weren't the clones made on Planet 'Camino'.
Better make sure that Lucasfilm doesn't sue over that.
Besides, the name sucks... Go for something Greek, or Latin, or Classical...

Posted by Harry Zink at February 19, 2003 1:04 AMPeople, the planet in StarWars:EPII was "Kamino", with a K. "Camino", with a C, is spanish for path. While this name doesn't stoke me either (my vote was for Voyager, or Gemini - which would have still represented the "duality" of the project), it is important to just pick one and move on.
Posted by Ted at February 19, 2003 6:30 AMActually, 'el camino', can be roughly translated as 'the road', which is fitting, for the car and the browser.
Posted by Paul Laroquod at February 19, 2003 2:42 PMhttp://www.redwoodcity.org/commun/projects/medians/Before1.jpg
lovely...
Posted by Jonathan at February 19, 2003 11:22 PM'Safari' isn't much better than Camino...when I think of a Safari I think of shooting large animals in a Third World country.
I think Chimera should have changed to 'Chevette'--now there was a real piece of crap car. I drove one in high school, it wouldn't do 55 off a cliff. The highlight was one day the rear-view mirror just fell the hell off while I was driving. Buy Japanese, that's the moral to my rambling...
Posted by Bored at Work at February 20, 2003 3:10 PMIt's obvious NONE of you are Ween fans. Don't you remember the song El Camino???
'El Camino - she's always fast, never slow.'
it's on God Ween Satan. Go get it if you can find it.
Posted by chris chapman at February 21, 2003 12:04 PMCamino is good!
In danish it also means fireplace (Kamin), so keep the browser hot!
(I'm still using OS X 10.1.5)
Posted by shumo at February 24, 2003 10:44 AMCamino reminds me too much of "El Camino Real" near where I live. On that road it takes way too long to get where you're going because you pass by all of these useless stores along the way. While I do actually understand spanish and know that it's just another word, it still will feel like a bad name whenever I use it.
Posted by andpoul at February 24, 2003 6:36 PMIn italian "camino" means exactly "chimney" but also "fireplace".
"Cammino" with two "m" means "path".
P.S.: In my english dictionary the word CHIMNEY comes right after the word CHIMERA. By the way the next is CHIMP! :-)
Posted by Fabio at February 25, 2003 8:02 AMI like "Camino". I guess it all depends on how you make your way (which is what the word means). For me, it does suggest speed ;-)
Posted by David at February 26, 2003 1:00 PMThe Camino is actually also that Pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, in Spain. It's a long walk. Maybe that's why they called it Camino. And indeed, everyone will finally know how to pronounce it's name. With Chimera took me a few months to figure out it's pronounciation!
Posted by Bengt Lundvik at February 28, 2003 8:38 AMI just named my 80GB Firewire hard drive "Chimera". I dare any lawyer to come hassle me about it.
*takes out baseball bat*
Posted by David Portela at February 28, 2003 3:32 PM...And just why was the name changed anyhow?????
Come on, don't just talk about it why??
Posted by Stashman at March 11, 2003 10:35 AMCan anyone help? Looking for info on when, where and who named the Chevy El Camino. Also, where dose the name come from and what does it mean?
Any help would be appreciated--------$
