Comments: Safari Newsflash: Recent WebCore Work

Cool, can you drop any hints as to when we will see a new Safari build for testing? ;-) I know, I know, YEAH RIGHT! Apple....

Dave, you need to sneak out a build of Safari, set up a rogue nightly ftp! Though I suppose we wouldn't want you to get fired, seeing as you're doing such a great job and being very informative to boot.

Heck, even a release of the WebCore framework would be great. Those of us obsessive enough to build and install it ourselves could try it out for you.

Hmm ... Aside from liabiliy issues on Apple's part (from complaining customers who don't understand the concept behind the idea I'm about to mention), what would the chances of a nightly build being curl-able from Apple's Safari site, Dave?

I suppose the big stumbling block would be the hordes of users not used to the nightly build idea, thinking each is a completely sanctioned and relatively bug-free(er) release (as if the BETA of Safari currently available didn't also fit into the "unfinished software" category, to begin with).

What does the Daveinator say?

WebCore has been updated. It's at v53 right now if you go look at the site. (The latest Safari release is v51). I know someone who even hacked the v53 WebCore/JavascriptCore so that they could be dropped into a v51 Safari.

I don't understand a fraction of the technical stuff. I just wish for the tabbed browsing. And world peace.

There may be no nightly builds, release schedules, or whatever. But, what other Apple product do you get to see evolve in such detail?

Although all this info makes the anticipation of the next release even greater!

Keep up the good work, Dave.

Ya, this is like a backstage pass to the future, if any of you know what I mean... :)

I am thrilled to see Apple focusing on WebCore. Once a usable library is available, it will be interesting to see how html is integrated into desktop applications other than web browsers.

Hey Dave, who hacked WebCore so it can be dropped into v.51 Safari? I just downloaded v.53 WebCore, but I don't understand enough to turn it into the proper form to put in Safari.

Posted by Kevin at February 4, 2003 5:10 PM

Yeah, how did he do it? I just built v53, but it doesn't work when dropped into Safari.

a form of grouping opened pages is necesary!
and being able to open new pages in an opened group or making a new group and being able to switch between different pages in the groups and having different pages or groups visible at will...

or you could just go with tabs :p

but this form of organization and browsing speed boost is necesary. i so much desire safari and apple for that matter to just pull ahead and be like the best thing every. apple already is that for me but safari lacks a form of organizing and seemlesly switching between opened pages and grouping opened pages in the way that tabs do for chimera.

i would like to note that pith is horrible. it takes too much space and doesnt allow grouping.

groups groups groups. please.

man this is so popular, if you guys get some cool idea for this out there that works nicely like apple is so well known for.

man... i will be so impressed i will love apple just so much. i hope this browser makes it big.

thank you to the developers ^_^ good work you guys.

As for the v53 version of WebCore - how about just typing "safari webcore v53" into the Google search bar? Well, the page is in Japanese but you'll find the link to the dmg easy enough.

Then it is just a matter of replacing the Frameworks in the Safari package - worked for me;-)

Why does this not sound good? Am I not understanding this right? Nothing should be hacked onto in 1st party apps.

Posted by Fun to hack on!? at February 5, 2003 8:57 AM

Surely "hack on" and "kludge" are distinct.

Translation: We old school on the heazy cizzodebizzase, j0. Wai. Or something.

The Surfin' Safari Blog has a problem on IE and one on Safari:

on IE the right column sticks into the header (the header is rendered too wide

on Safari the Rust theme shows no content of the Blog.

I love Safari - it just does either not show complex elements on sites or it crashes - is there a way to somehow alert the user that "not all code has been rendered please check" - I made myself more than once a fool when surfing in synch and chatting on iChat and getting a "what do you mean you dont see the submenu? It's right there"

Hope this helps - email me if you want screen shots

So, I typed "webcore safari v53" into google, and all I get back is a result of this page!

Can anyone help us fink the hacked WebCore more helpfully?
