well, I do know that it's the least upper bound of the heights of all the ring's prime ideals, but I haven't the foggiest idea what it's good for, so that probably won't help you.

I do recall seeing a computer program of some description that calculated it though. Maybe it was a mathmatica program or something. Has your book/prof told you what it's good for?
