A Shortstop/Chess playing blogger?

Katrina (note: not K'Trina) might think this is funny...

Tonight I got to play shortstop again. I asked my coach to let me play so I could have something to blog about. Turns out several of my teammates did not know what a blog was. Now they know. And they are very frightened...

Katrina: You also need to check the timestamps - I am not blogging until 2 A.M..

The Film Shoot

As promised, here is an update on the documentary film shoot I participated in this weekend:

Traveled to Davis on Friday night. Long day of shooting on Saturday. Another long day of shooting on Sunday. There were no creative differences and the director was kind enough to put up with the somewhat temperamental cinematographer who was rather insistent that they not leave until she got her broom shot. The crew was well fed and we also had peanut M&M's, which made the cinematographer happy. Preliminary review of the footage indicated lighting was good and in general the director was pleased with what we got. Editing should begin sometime in early June. The film will likely be submitted to some film festivals for consideration.

The film focuses on a hair salon in Davis called "The Hair Saloon." It was the owner's dream to open her own salon, but shortly after doing so she was diagnosed with cancer. We shot a day's worth of footage of clients coming into the salon as well as interviews with each customer after they had their hair done. On Sunday, we shot interviews with the owner, co-owner and one of the employees.

As time progresses I will update this blog with what is happening in the editing room.

JFK in a riff

Heard this is in a riff today - liked it and found out it was JFK. JFK liked to record his thoughts on a tape recorder and this snippet comes from tapes recorded during his campaign against Richard M. Nixon in 1960:

"The magic of politics is not the panoply of office. The magic of politics is participating on all levels of national life in an affirmative way, of determining, of playing a small role in determining whether freedom will not only endure, whether in Mr. Faulkner's words, freedom will not only endure, but also prevail."

Marcia's Quote of the Day (Yes, this is an original quote by me): "Those who triumph against unheard of odds shall revel in the beauty of their own excalibur."

Back in the film biz...

This weekend I will be back behind the camera lens after a long hiatus. The last time I shot a film at USC, one of professor's made the comment, "What was that?" (I think she didn't appreciate the music that I used in the film). Anyway, I will be shooting a documentary film with a friend of mine who is taking a film class at De Anza College. Stay tuned for more details.

I just saw the trailer (again) for the movie "The Day after Tomorrow." I thought I spotted Ian Holm of "The Sweet Hereafter" fame - am surprised he would take a role in that movie. BTW if you haven't seen "The Sweet Hereafter," I would recommend seeing it.

Sharks win

Good day for the San Jose Sharks - they won on the road and now come back to the Shark Tank to try to go one up on the Flames. My feeling is if the Sharks don't advance past the Flames, then their Stanley Cup days are numbered. When you get this close you have to get there.

I think the commercial for the Saturn Ion is pretty funny - I don't believe the car is as indestructible as they make it out in the commercial. I am thinking about going to a Saturn dealership and crashing into the side of the car to see if I can dent it. If anyone out there is up for the challenge, let me know.

Speaking of automobile ads, it is clearly evident that Mazda switched advertising agencies - the ads for the Miata and the RX-8 are quite stylish.

Came across this today - quite interesting .. I like it when people go on rampages http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/1084549209

Finally, the next thing I would bottle up for my snowglobe collection: A Jimi Hendrix guitar solo

More things to bottle up in my snowglobes

pure adrenaline created by drinking 6 caffeinated cokes and eating a entire bag of M&Ms

neurons firing when Pav is trying to beat me at a game of chess (the brain energy generated by Pav may surpass the energy unleashed in the new film "The Day after Tomorrow")

the combined frenzied energy of polar bear and sparky when they have their standoffs at the Moz Foundation offices

Random Quote of the day (don't remember exactly where it came from): "Dada is the only savings bank that pays interest in eternity."

Quotes about thinking too much

"Think enough and you won't know anything." - Kenneth Patchen

"You think too much, Boss." - Anthony Quinn in Zorba the Greek

Item #3 I would bottle in my snowglobe: Fear. lots of it.

Item #4: the inner peace exuded by the Dalai Lama

Gabba Gabba Hey!

listening to the Ramones in the car today made me remember...

a long time ago
in college
when the Ramones played our Spring Concert at UCONN
and at the end of the concert, Joey said to the crowd
"Thank you Marcia"
I wish i could find a bootleg of that concert
just so i could hear joey say that again. not sure why.

Item #2 I would bottle up for my snowglobe collection: the passion of a Martin Luther King, Jr speech

Asa made my day!

My sister came over to the Moz Cantina tonight, and Asa apparently did not realize that we were related. So when he found out, his first comment was "And you are from the same parents?" Memories came rushing back of when I was young, and people used to think I was the "cousin" or possibly a result of an early milk delivery by the milkman.

in other news, after a valiant effort, i lost yet another chess battle to Pav. Asa advised me to lay down my king, and trusting his chess instincts, I readily complied. sigh.

oh, and i forgot chofmann's quote of the day "I've gotta stop eating pizza."

oh, and i also forgot the kinds of things I will bottle up in my snowglobes.

(1) The rush of adrenaline you get when you go skydiving for the first time.

Tune in tomorrow for #2.

Unleashing the power of snowglobes

still in the conceptual stage, but here is the basic premise: bottle up various energies and store them in snowglobes.

tune in tomorrow for stage two

Have you ever heard of Netscape?

I had to call AOL customer service to cancel the 1+1 account that I gave to my relative. After using every conceivable argument to convince me to keep the account, the CS rep finally asked me if I had ever heard of Netscape. My answer - "No... I have never heard of Netscape. What do they do?" sigh.

Softball: Playing Shortstop

Last night we had a shortage of players, so I actually got to play my favorite position - shortstop. I almost turned a double play. Of all the infield positions, I feel most comfortable at short. I might also mention at this point that in my Tuesday league we almost always play with an all-women infield, and we commit few errors. However, our W-L record could definitely use some improvement.

Lost in Muir Woods

Note to self: Pay more attention when hiking - don't enter a trail and find out that you are on a 4 hour hike and failed to bring along any water. Luckily there is a 7-11 not far from the Muir Woods exit so I was able to re-hydrate myself.

In other news, looks like people are actually reading my blog, I actually got a comment. guess I will have to kick things up a notch.

Been using Thunderbird 0.6 - it is really great. Kudos again to Scott.
