BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | UK military awaits Skynet launch
After watching Terminator 2 the other day, where Skynet is the name of the defense system that becomes self aware and wages war on humanity, the title of this story gave me pause when I saw it. I wondered if the movie influenced the name; this is Skynet 5 (a military communications satellite), to replace Skynet 4, so this isn't the first one, but according to Wikipedia, Skynet 1 launched in 1969, which by far predates the film.
