New Car: 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

I bought a new car today - a 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid (manual, darkish-blue). It gets 46-51 miles per gallon according to fueleconomy.gov (and the sticker on the car). We'll see how much it actually gets, but most reports say that the sticker MPG is pretty accurate. I'm pretty excited!

Congrats. I have normal gas-o-holic version.

Sweet. Hybrids rock. (My dad drives a 2003 Prius)

Cool stuff, just remember to trade it in before the battery dies out (or the warranty is up, whichever comes first). Those batteries cost about $1,000 to replace.

congrats on the new car dude. let me know if you wanna race ;)

Posted by: Armen at August 14, 2005 11:53 PM

Did you have any trouble getting your hands on one of those? I've heard different stories at different times about the supply and demand of hyrbids in general.

Posted by: Chris at August 15, 2005 7:55 AM

Good deal, read this article, http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2005/08/13/state/n091301D38.DTL

Apparently this guy can mod your car to get 250 mpg. Mind you you'll probably kill the car in 12 months and/or blowup. But fuel savings will be amazing in the mean time.

Posted by: Nicademus at August 15, 2005 8:14 AM

Chris: I didn't have any trouble getting the car. I bought it on Saturday, it gets delivered today (Monday). My dealer just did a trade with another dealer to get the car in the right color.

Armen: I'll race you, but only if we can race for 500 miles and no stopping for gas :)

Posted by: Josh Aas at August 15, 2005 12:11 PM

Awesome, Josh! Does this mean you'll be driving back to Minnesota next time, instead of flying? My next car will probably have to be a hybrid, but that won't happen until my jetta dies.

Posted by: holly. at August 15, 2005 12:51 PM

Nicademus, actually, he can't mod his Honda that way. only the toyota-hybrid-system cars, such as the toyotas, lexus, and ford vehicles, can get that mod. main reason for that is that the honda hybrids can't drive on electricity alone.

and why would he kill the car?

Posted by: lensovet at August 18, 2005 5:18 PM

I just bought one on about a month ago and am getting a lousy 35 mpg: 5 speed manual, and doing all the right things! Did I get a lemon?

Posted by: Dave at August 18, 2005 8:04 PM

Dave and all...

I bought my HCH in June...and have put 7500 miles on it already...I live in hilly territory and commute 80 miles a day. I wasn't getting anything better than 43.5- 46 mpg on my commutes...but on flatter terrain, and in slower traffic conditions, I got 49 MPG. I've also adjusted my driving habits to get the better MPG...going 65 instead of 72, coasting downhill, etc. I think (don't know) that the car improved slightly over the break-in time, too...

I have been thinking about getting a 2005 civic hybrid or maybe even the accord hybrid but I'm looking into it more. I recently traded my 98 bmw 328i in for the 2002 toyota 4runner that I currently drive. Any advice would be appreciated.

There are a few minor problems with My Honda Civic Hybrid. The brakes make a noise and will release when the brake is applied, letting the car accelerate some before stoping (bad when in traffic, do not travel too close). The power jacks blow the fuse when pluging any thing in (can not use the jacks for phone or computer while traveling). The service department said this was common on all Honda hybrids. There is a recall for the MPG indication, you may not be getting the MPG you think, this is a special order replacement part.

If solitary confinement, which removes prisoners from contact with others is severe punishment, what is being kept alive, even in the absence of expressed wishes to the contrary, in what is essentially a super solitary confinement inside your skin? Of course you can argue that TS is happy in the presense of her parents, but can you be sure? What if she is grimacing, but her confused neural pathways make is come out a smile? What if what she is communicating even now is “please let me go?” You cannot assume that if she is in a MCS, therefore she wants to continue that way. Can you imagine the utter frustration of not being able to meaningfully communicate and knowing that you cannot communicate?

To add to the comments offered by Movies on September 13, 2006 12:42 PM, I've encoutnered a problem with Honda hybrid braking systems on two models (the 2000 Insight and the 2003 HCH - both manual transmissions). Recently, ambivalence cost me dearly. Driving on the interstate, a truck cut me off. I hit the brakes but found myself accelerating towards the truck instead of stopping. At the last minute, I swereved to avoid the truck and ended up skidding, rolling, and finally crashing to a stop. On a positive note, I walked away from the accident with some minor scratches and no one else was hurt. But needless to say, I'm reluctant to go with Honda again.
