The application deadline for the Google Summer of Code is 12 noon PDT / 19:00 UTC on April 3 (that's tomorrow). So if you are a student and want to flip bits, not burgers this summer, then check out the list of projects (or think of your own) and apply!

Dan: one reason is because the Mozilla Corporation has an intern program, many core Firefox developers are involved in that instead. But over and above that, you'll have to ask them :-) Mentoring is a time commitment; not everyone has time.
