I have just confirmed with Enfield Council that I can now technically be prosecuted for leaving my bedroom door open because, as of yesterday, it bears an ugly blue "Fire Door - Keep Shut" sign.
The Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006, section 10, paragraph f).
Time for a change of government, I think.

Posted by: Matthew Wilson at September 4, 2008 3:39 PMThe regulations are designed to protect poor families in large houses from dodgy landlords with dodgy properties. As such, it's a good thing.
Posted by: JD at September 5, 2008 8:02 AMJD: the regulations don't apply to "poor families in large houses", unless there are multiple families sharing the same house. I agree that protecting such situations from dodgy landlords is a good thing, but I disagree that legislation which makes it illegal for me to leave my bedroom door open is the correct way to go about it.
Posted by: Gerv at September 5, 2008 8:08 AMWow, that really is quite bad. Talk about micromanagement!
OTOH, a change of government is typically rather painful as well, unless you can somehow manage it without the usual complementary civil war.
Posted by: Jonadab the Unsightly One at September 9, 2008 11:36 AMGerv the rules are there to protect the poor from exploitation. maybe you should stick to software and leave politics to someone else.
Posted by: ed at September 10, 2008 1:21 PMEd - what a condescending and arrogant point of view. I can take one of two things out of your comment; 1) You believe politicians only should be allowed to make laws, without the burden of input from their constituents, or 2) You have a different opinion than Gerv on the matter, and subsequently believe that his opinion should not matter or count.
As to protecting the poor from exploitation, I believe that was a primary cause for the Bolsheviks.
Posted by: Paul at September 11, 2008 5:05 PMGerv, do you think that it is reasonable to ask you to keep your bedroom door closed?
