Browsers At The BBC

It was on Slashdot, but perhaps not everyone reads that, so: here's a very thoughtful article giving detailed stats on the browser breakdown for www.bbc.co.uk. The number you are looking for is 9.7%, but the rest is still worth a read.

I reckon the homepage probably isn't representative. People using things such as RSS and bookmark keywords which direct you straight to specific content without going through the homepage are the sort of people most likely to be using alternative browsers.

So the figure for the whole BBC site is likely to be higher.

Sigh, people will always manage to think of ‘but’s’.

What about, maybe the number of people using RSS feeds are only a fraction of the total amount of visitors, and thus this scenario you mention will not make a large impact on the statistics?

Given that Firefox is subscribed to the BBC's RSS feed by default, in terms of Firefox the RSS is probably significant.

People will always think of "but"s with web stats, because they are pretty tricky to analyse in a way that you can draw any useful conclusions from. That's why it's good to read the rest of the stuff, rather than just looking at the 9.7%, which doesn't really tell you much.
