Gmail Notifier Extension 0.3
New stuff:
- Seamonkey support! (with uninstaller)
- Firefox 0.8 support (people were asking for this)
- Context menu for access to:
Toggle Statusbar item
Check Now
Logout
Preferences
- Automatic login preference
- Once logged in, a preference to determine what happens if the icon is clicked on: either open in current tab, new window or new tab.
- On windows, when new mail arrives, a systen notification is shown (like mailnews/tbird does for new mail, or the ff download manager). Can be disabled in the preferences panel.
[UPDATE]
The statusbar item toggling was broken, 0.3.1 released to fix this.

Excellent update. With automatic login and a notification, this extension is perfect. Thanks a lot!
Posted by: steeef at July 14, 2004 10:06 AM
I can't seem to turn off the status bar item. Everytime the browser is restarted, the status bar entry reappears.

I love the update keep up the good work this is my favorite extension
Posted by: Fernando at July 14, 2004 11:29 AM
Thanks man, great extension.
Posted by: larryni at July 14, 2004 11:43 AM
Oops, forgot to ask something. Is there any way that the status bar notifier keeps itself up-to-date when opening a new window? With each new window it looks like I haven't logged in yet, ie no number showing, and when clicked it just pops up the login box again instead of going to my inbox.
Posted by: larryni at July 14, 2004 11:48 AM
Remember's login details across launches now, but the status bar text reappears after a retsart (if disabled).

I love this extension ! Any chance of getting it listed on update.mozilla.org so we can take advantage of update notifications ?

This is a great extension, Doron... a suggestions for a future update: register as default email handler.
How you might do this:
- create a mailto: protocol handler (can be done as a js component)
- use bryner's forthcoming gconf service/future changes to nsIWindowsShellService .. there might be something we can do here for Mac, too. (talk to me for details - this might be a good excuse to get a more generic set of system registry apis set up) to set up registry keys to register as default mail handler
- when user clicks on mailto: link in antoher app or hits Ctrl+M in Firefox GMail opens to a 'compose' page in same tab/new tab/new window per your existing preference...

Additionally, the popup notification of new mail could do with a little 'beautification' !

Ben: Something along those lines already exists:

Hey i noticed that filterd laters dont count as "a number recived" is this a bug?
Posted by: Fernando at July 14, 2004 2:30 PM
Hi,
I have a problem logging into GMail. This might have something to do with not having an account. ;-)
Anyone got a spare invitation, by any chance?
Thanks,

Does this extension break Gmail TOS?
Posted by: anon at July 15, 2004 3:53 AM
Could you make it use SSL connections instead?

Is this supposed to work on Firefox 9.1 for Mac OSX? I installed it on my iBook and my G5 and neither display a Gmail icon in my Navigation Toolbar.
Posted by: Citizen Keith at July 15, 2004 10:41 AM
Nevermind... I didn't realize that I had to customize the Nav Toolbar before it would work.
Posted by: Citizen Keith at July 15, 2004 10:42 AM
Hey, I just wanted to give thanks for this awesome update. Fine tunings will come, but right now this is probably my favorite extension. The auto-login is great. Thanks again.

Hi,
Thanks to Techno Lust, I now have a Gmail account!
I've installed the extension, and indeed, it's awesome! Definitely at least 1.0 quality, I'd say.
I only have one minor suggestion so far:
I don't know if it os feasible, but it would be nice if the Gmail popup menu had an entry like “New Message” which would open a compose window.
(For consistency, the menu should perhaps also have an entry “Open Gmail”, which does the same thing as a left click.)
Thanks,
– Michael

great extension...
only thing i can think of that would be a nice additional feature is the option to have multiple gmail accounts saved, and then have the option to select anyone (suggestion by right clicking the status bar Gmail) and have that be the account for the status bar. kinda like select the account from a list and the checked one is the active one.
handy if you have more than one account or if multiple people use the same computer and have gmail accounts
great work!!!
Posted by: sean at July 18, 2004 4:45 PM
one more idea...
what if the popup contained the subject of the new email?
kinda of like this gmail taskbar agent...

Is the auto-login feature supposed to display your new e-mail without having to click on anything?
Even with the box checked, I still have to click on the Gmail Notifier icon and click "log in" to get my unread mail to show up.
Is this a bug?
Posted by: Troy at July 19, 2004 8:20 PM
hey great extension. its a great idea.
my suggestions i think is fairly simple, when you click on the gmail in the status bar, it opens a tab which is nice except the tab is not brought to the front of all the other tabs. you have to manually click on the tab to get it to bring to front.
other than that, i've had no problems
Posted by: gmailuser at July 20, 2004 3:54 PM
I agree with the last post that the tab should be focused. I would also like to see an option to include a notification sound when new mail is found. Thanks for making such a great extension!

I have the same problem as Troy (see above): I have to manually log in each time I start FF, despite the fact that I have set the auto login preference.
My specs:
Win98
FF 0.9.2
Gmail notifier 0.3.1

Hey, I just installed this today but it won't let me log-in. I've double-checked my login details, but still no luck. Has something at gmail been updated that stops the plugin from working, or is it just me?
Posted by: Tim at July 28, 2004 1:29 AM
OK so maybe I just tried it again and it's working now :o
thanks for a great plugin :D

I can also confirm its not working. V0.3.1 fails to log in. There is no other error message except the "Failed to log in" message.

Posted by: halfchicken at August 11, 2004 9:58 AM
hum... i have an idea for a new wonderfull extension :)
If you browse a lot of forum / news site you will have to check often if there is new posts or new articles to read (in other words if the web page change).
Why not put in the statubar a small icon if a web page change?
The idea is to have a window where you can put a list of web page to "check" (every url have it's "timeout", for example i want to check the changes of www.gnappo.com every 40 seconds)...
If you click on the small icon you will have a menu with the pages changed, if you click on an item of that menu a tab with that page will be opened.
