Gmail Notifier Progress

You can install it for FireFox (Seamonkey was busy doing usefull stuff) from here. Note that it seems that 0.9 itself won't work well, and that you need 0.9 branch builds due to a bug.

Its currently a toolbar item (I'll do a statusbar version next week), and you click on it to login (with an nice login window). After you login, clicking on it will open gmail.

I stress that this is a hack - I am loading gmail into a hidden browser, and when gmail refreshes itself, so will the icon.

***Update**
The number is the amount of new mails in the inbox.

Free gmail invites for better looking icons :)

Also, it seems that it fails if you have never logged into gmail before with the profile - must be a cookie issue or such.

Thanks for making this. Seems to work on 0.9, so far.

Could you add middle click to open in a new tab?

Posted by: Devon at June 25, 2004 03:51 PM

Lemme know when it works in the One True Browser. :)

Posted by: MightyMu at June 25, 2004 06:28 PM

A suggestion: make the icon look disabled (greyed out) when there's no new mail, and make the icon colored when there's new mail. Use a tooltip to inform users of new messages. I don't know what "2" is in that image but I assumed it's the number of new messages, and it looks kind of out of place...

Posted by: berkut at June 25, 2004 07:15 PM

"2" means "beta"?

Posted by: minghong at June 26, 2004 12:11 AM

I found an icon set here:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=67&t=179449&st=0#entry2306411

Maybe you'd like to contact its creator.

Posted by: minghong at June 26, 2004 12:17 AM

I really appreciate the work you have done on this plugin. A request for the future: the ability to toggle between http: and https:, I prefer to login to my GMail via the https route.

Thanks again!

is a great idea doron :) great extension :)

Posted by: Zootropo at June 27, 2004 03:33 AM

Why not just use the Mail icon from the original Winstripe theme? It's GPL licensed anyway and blends in with the default theme.

Posted by: David Tenser at June 27, 2004 04:01 AM

I just found this page, this is much needed, thanks for creating it :)
It's working fine for me in 0.9 also.

Posted by: Rob at June 27, 2004 11:25 AM

This is great but how do I keep it loged in? I have to relog in with every browser load? I must have missed something. :(

Posted by: Bill at June 27, 2004 07:34 PM

I am not storing the login info after closing the browser because I didn't have time to figure how to do so securly.

Posted by: Doron at June 28, 2004 07:40 AM

I can't seem to get it to log in but I'm sure it's my own fault. Anyway, here's an improved (hopefully) toolbar icon: http://users.telenet.be/ct/fx-gmail.png

¡¡Buena idea!! Good idea!!

Posted by: Antonio at June 28, 2004 10:58 AM

For an icon, I would suggest just using google favicon. It's small and to the point. The current one is too large.

Posted by: Chris at June 28, 2004 12:18 PM

1) It seems to me that when click the icon, I got a http://gmail.googl.com, instead of https://gmail.google.com. I would prefer the security one.

2) I would like to see a function that it can be middle-clicked/dragged to be openned in new tab.

This is dead sexy!
Thanks!

Posted by: Jason at June 28, 2004 02:25 PM

After a quick try and find it really a nice extension. For the comments I made above, I just find quick fixes for them:

In your gm-notifier.js, I modify your gm_notifier.prototype.login function into following:

gm_notifier.prototype.login = function (){
if (!this.is_logged_in) {
this.login_window = window.openDialog("chrome://gm-notifier/content/gm-login.xul", "_blank", "chrome,resizable=no,dependent=yes");
} else {
var newTab = document.getElementById("content").addTab("https://gmail.google.com");
document.getElementById("content").selectedTab = newTab;
}
}

Well done job!

Posted by: morphis at June 28, 2004 02:33 PM

I installed the extension but the icon didn't appear on mi toolbar.. what can I do?... I have FF 9.0...

Posted by: cubis at June 28, 2004 04:01 PM

This is a nifty extension, it'd be neat if you could figure out how to make the login persistent -- perhaps some clever tie-in with singons? Regardless, I'm enjoying it. Anyway, the icon I use is one of my own creation...

http://amuck.ath.cx/Fx.Buttons/Gmail.png

It's small but to the point, roughly about the same size as the Google favicon but it fits in better with my favourite theme, Phoenity.

Posted by: Wuff at June 28, 2004 08:04 PM

nice...i was working on the same thing, but i'm sure some other users have a few gmail accounts, or at least more than one person that logs into a gmail account on the same browser...

hence my suggestion of being able to store gmail usernames and passwords and be notified if any have new mail.

this idea would help with the problem the the "Don't ask my password for 2 weeks" box isn't checked because the extension would have the username and password and could login itself to check for new mail.

maybe do a check to see if already logged in, otherwise login.

it's a great start! thanks a bunch!

Posted by: sean at June 29, 2004 09:26 AM

When you click on the mail icon, Firefox attempts to open http://gmail.google.com and Gmail will not open. It should be https://gmail.google.com for Gmail to open in Firefox.

Very, very nice. The icon, though, needs changing -- that set linked to before had some nice ones (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=67&t=179449&st=0#entry2306411).
Also, middle-click for new tab would be great, as would auto-login, and a status-bar versions. It's still much nicer than just leaving a tab open though :)

Posted by: Parikshit at June 29, 2004 04:29 PM

I've noticed something of a peculiarity.

Close Firefox and reopen it, click on the GM-Notifier icon so the login dialog pops up. Instead of entering your usual login, just type in your username and leave the password field blank. Click login. Also, try writing random nonsense in the password field and then logging in. Both offer the same result. You get logged in no matter what's in the password field.

My only thought is that Doron's hidden browser is using the cookie and logging in automatically. So indeed you don't have to enter your password every time Firefox starts, just once about every two weeks. I know this is true because on my last session, I logged on this way (with no password) and I got mail. The little '0' changed to '1', I clicked and indeed, my account had mail.

Just thought I'd let Doron and everyone know about this.

The gmail favicon :

And this is another icon with an enveloppe :

Posted by: Lim Chee Aun at June 30, 2004 04:58 AM

This would be a nice extension if it worked! You cannot bring up your Gmail account by clicking the icon after you have login because the extension refers to http instead of https which is required by Gmail. Gtray works, Doran's extension is broken.

I added this to my GoogleBar using the 'googlebarExtrasOverlay.xul' file.

Posted by: Guy at June 30, 2004 05:26 AM

Guy, could you detail exactly hows you added it to your GoogleBar? Is this for the Googlebar in IE or the GoogleBar for Firefox? Thanks.

Posted by: observer at June 30, 2004 11:01 AM

Of course it is the googlebar for mozilla (http://googlebar.mozdev.org/index.html)
This bar have a file named 'googlebarExtrasOverlay.xul' in this file you can add buttons to googlebar. http://googlebar.mozdev.org/fb01.html#181

I copied the most of 'gm-fb-overlay.xul' to this file and changed the phaths to the other files of this extenstion so I can use them without installing it.

Posted by: w0073r at June 30, 2004 12:47 PM

I use the Qute theme and I just extracted the envelope icon and put it inside the gm-notifier.jar and it blends in quite nicely.

http://www.andycouch.com/gm-notifier-qute.png

Posted by: Andy Couch at June 30, 2004 03:52 PM

Open your Start Menu.
. XP/2000: Click on Search.
. 9x/Me: Click on Find then Files or Folders.

Type in gm-notifier.jar in the search field and hit return.

When it's found the file, right-click it and select open with.

Now you'll have to open it with whatever compression program you have on your system; be it 7-Zip WinRAR, WinZIP or whatever.

Once you have it open, select content and hit return then select gm-notifier and hit return.

You should now be in a folder with a whole bunch of files, find gm-notifier.js and use your program's 'Edit' functionality. By this I mean use the program's ability to edit files on the fly, which means you can change a file's contents and then store it back into the jar.

Edit the gm-notifier.js file.

Find all instances of http and change them to https. Problem solved.

How often does this addon check for new messages?

Can I configure it to check my email every one or two minutes?

Posted by: Eddie at July 1, 2004 08:01 AM

Eddie,

I don't know how often it checks for mail, but it appears to check in real time. The mail icon updates automatically as soon as I receive new mail.

Posted by: observer at July 1, 2004 03:40 PM

- Eddie

"I stress that this is a hack - I am loading gmail into a hidden browser, and when gmail refreshes itself, so will the icon."

From this I surmised that Google themselves must refresh the page to some schedule. First, I went to my inbox and used Ctrl+A to Select All, then I utilized View Selection Source.

I couldn't see any references to reload or refresh so instead I decided to watch the tab with an Eagle-like eye for the word 'Loading'. Sure enough, after a minute, it came up.

So did it the minute after and the minute after that.

Logic would dictate then, as Gm-Notifier loads and monitors a hidden browser pane, it would be restricted to Gmail's own refresh (check) rate. This being one minute.

I cannot get it to work. The login thing pops up, and it doesn't go anywhere when I try to login

Posted by: Bill at July 2, 2004 09:48 AM

you need to clean up your extension a bit more, code-wise. there's lots of "test" and "filename~" files in there that are taking up room, and chris pederick's name and "user agent switcher" are in half of it.

but I like the end result, thanks.

Posted by: eric at July 2, 2004 04:49 PM

A ponderance...

It seems that entering the password in the dialog matters very little as the whole system of this extension relies on being able to 'login'. I can do this from the site and then go two weeks without needing to enter a user/pass at all.

A proposal...

For those who know what they're doing, why not offer an auto-login function? What it would do is bypass the login dialog and start immediately with Firefox. When it fails to login it will simply popup a "Cookie has expired." message.

One cannot speak for others but I believe this might be a rather handy alternate solution, rather than logging in every time Fx is launched.

Posted by: Wuff Mastaile at July 2, 2004 07:14 PM

Bah, stop complaining and do a better job yourself! Or wait till I get back from vacation. Poor little blog is getting massacared.

As for cleaning up the code - I said it was a quick hack, and for some reason firefox decided it did not like my contents.rdf a lot, so I reused someone others to get it to work. The 0.2 version I have already fixes that.

FYI. I installed the July 6th trunk build of Firefox and was getting a XUL error until I uninstalled GmailNotifier 0.1. After it was uninstalled I was able to run firefox with no problems.

Just in case anyone else comes up against the problem I had.

I DID run an older version of firefox (official 0.9.1 release) to get a working browser to run the uninstall.

Posted by: matte at July 6, 2004 12:16 PM

I am still running firefox 0.8 for various reason. I
re-packed it into 0.8 compatible and made some some minor changes as I posted above. In case some guys need it, please post your request in mozillazine or send feedback through http://morphis.eu.org, so that I can send you a copy.

Hope doron returns soon, makes a official 0.8 compatible version and adds many other interesting features.

I like Doron's Gmail notifier. Since I modified it so that it opens https, it has been without problems. Here is a link to a new program that was just released, I have found it to be a little buggy but it does work.
Gmail Agent API v0.5 / Mail Notifier & Address Importer http://johnvey.com/features/gmailapi/ Copy and paste the URL or click on my name for the link, html is not working on the thread. I am sure that Doron's has some things up his sleeve so as to surprise us in the next release.

Posted by: observer at July 7, 2004 10:04 AM

Ok, I have decided not to use the Gmail Agent API v0.5 / Mail Notifier & Address Importer since it is too buggy. Doran's is the best notifier so far,IMO. The preview email mode as well as the multiple account option is nice in the Gmail Agent and perhaps Doran can implement something similar in his next release.

I wanted to add my notes to the request list:

1. https login
2. "open in a new tab" option
3. Clicking on the button the first time (if it's not logged in) should try to just log in so that you don't have to do that separately (you know: Click the button, click on login, then wait for the window to go away... somewhat annoying) Then, a second click could open up gmail.com

3.5. Actually, perhaps that could be an option too. Maybe someone might want to click the button and have it log in *and* go to gmail.

Two ideas for a gmail invite:

1)Go to gmail (http://www.gmailswap.com/ ) swap and offer to exchange something

2)Do something for google to make them give you a gmail account. Google is more than just google. For instance they have blogger and other things. If you are in one of their side interests you might be likely to get a free invite.

Line 296 from gm-notifier.js:
// var val = aData.match(/\["ds",.*\]/);

// var myArray = eval(val[0]);
// if (myArray[1] > gGMailNotifier.new_emails_num)
// gGMailNotifier.newMailNotification(myArray[1] - gGMailNotifier.new_emails_num);

Posted by: Alex at August 3, 2004 08:38 AM

I realize that my previous post may have been unclear...
I meant to have the popup and audio notifications become options in the preferences menu. I know there's already a popup notice, but some users may want that to be optional, rather than "always-on." It'd also be great if I could pick a wav on my computer to play whenever I get new GMail.

What if the notifier also checked soon after you had clicked on it? Right now, it still displays a number even after you've checked your mail and read the messages. Or maybe just that it simply resets to 0 once you click it.

Thnk you for making this available. It seems to work on Mozilla Firebird 0.7 also.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031007 Firebird/0.7

Hi,
I think Gmail Notifier would be one of the best tools that have ever been coded, if it would only work on my system. I downloated and installed version 0.3.3 on Firefox 0.9.3 and everything seems to work fine ecxept the login. Do I have to open a special port on my firewall to get it to work or is there a bug that blocks this? Please, help me!

Posted by: max at August 22, 2004 07:28 AM

Here's a thought: automatic login. When you start Mozilla it logs in automatically instead of asking you to log in even when you have "rememeber password" checked. If there's no automatic login then there's not any difference in using this extension than it is to put a link to gmail in your Personal Toolbar Folder.

Unfortunately the plugin seems to have stopped working in some respects.

Google have put in a 'spot the gif' thing - lovely for the blind.

Fortunately, it *seems* the plugin uses the persistent cookies. I've just tried it. So once every couple of weeks, log in manually and check the 2 week box - but auto login no longer works, but it will use the cookies!
