Mozilla Thunderbird 0.1 Released

Mozilla Thunderbird 0.1 was just released. Congrats Scott! So where's your blog anyway? ;)

I've updated the download page to look more like the Mozilla Firebird download page. The colors of the boxes were taken from the Mozilla.org front page.

Oh, and I just put up a draft of the release notes for Mozilla Firebird 0.6.1. We're getting closer...

Mozilla 1.5a is out

Go get it.

As always, good work Asa and everyone else working on this release. Not that I'm using the application suite myself of course...

Going official

After an irc chat with Blake it's now for certain that the site formerly known as Mozilla Firebird Help is the official end-user site for Mozilla Firebird.

After another chat with Asa it turns out that the mozilla.org/projects/firebird space will most probably be reclaimed once a new project site has been made. Ben has put his thoughts about this on print in a document that pretty much explains the whole idea. The project site will be for developers and testers, while my site will be for end-users and possibly also the "product page" he is referring to.

Things are still a bit confused (at least on my end) and we're trying to sort all this out. In the meantime, I've updated the download page to be a little easier to use, since the old project page is gone.

Firebird checkins

I just discovered that Blake has effectively removed the official Mozilla Firebird project page, now pointing to my site instead. Does this mean that Mozilla Firebird Help is now the official home of Mozilla Firebird?

On another notice, noririty just got CVS access to mozilla/browser. Finally, someone who has time to squash some of those small bugs and start checking in good patches! Good work so far, noririty!

Mozilla Foundation

Interesting changes at mozilla.org and the new Mozilla Foundation. I'm sure this will lead to a better and more independent mozilla.org!

Update: There's a lot of confusion floating around and many questions unanswered. I advise anyone who wants to get a deeper understanding on what's going on at mozilla.org to read the article at SlashDot. Gervase Markham of mozilla.org is there to answer many questions which at least helped me understand this better.

Bug 212433

OK, I've updated the css. Does the calendar look better now?

Update: Please Shift+Reload the page before reporting any problems. If things still look weird, please provide a screenshot. Thank you.

Qute gets improved

Arvid has been working with the default theme for Mozilla Firebird lately and fixed a lot of small css issues I mentioned, as well as improving the overall appearance of the toolbar icons.

Screenshot of Qute theme

The differences are subtle but very important for the overall professional appearance. Good work Arvid!

Yes, I'm also using the icon pack extension by Jed Brown for the window icon, originally designed by Lim Chee Aun.

Update: The recent changes in Qute was just checked in by kerz!

mozillafirebird.com

Jack Baty writes:

I keep preaching the benefits of Mozilla Firebird, and for good reasons. The trouble begins when I actually convince someone to try it. Great! Go to mozilla.org and, oh wait, can’t find a link there. Try the projects page. No link there either? Well there’s always Google.

How about mozillafirebird.org? That’s got to work right? Well it doesn’t. Or at least it didn’t until now. I registered mozillafirebird.org .net and .com not 5 minutes ago. I’ll create a nice page pointing to the Mozilla Firebird project page for those folks who try hitting the obvious domain. Should be available in a day or two.

Yes, I know that the roadmap says that the name Mozilla Firebird is temporary and will change right after Mozilla hits 1.4, but I’ll bet in the ensuing confusion folks call it “Mozilla Firebird” for at least another year or so.

He certainly has a point there. Mozilla Firebird is a bit hard to find for first-time visitors of mozilla.org. Blake thinks that the domain names should point to Mozilla Firebird Help. We'll see what happens.

Anyway, thanks for the domain names Jack!

Now sharing the same extension database

The Extensions pages at Mozilla *bird Help now indirectly uses the centralized database at database.mozdev.org!

Stephen Clavering wrote a temporary XML parser that generates JavaScript files. These files are compatible with the current listings at *bird Help made by alanjstr so it required little change at my sites. Now I don't have to care that much about maintaining an ever growing list of extensions anymore, which is a big relief!

As mentioned earlier, the JavaScript files for the themes listings have been copied to database.mozdev.org, but there will be a true XML database for themes too in the future.

Trying to keep myself up to date

alanjstr has agreed to help me moving the js files to database.mozdev.org until we can setup up the XML parser for the *bird Help sites.

Moving the files to this more public location will help me keeping them up to date, since more people have access to the files. I find myself having less time for these stuff nowadays...

Update: The js files are now moved to database.mozdev.org!
