I just placed an order for a Dell Inspiron 6000. However, I managed to trick the web system by choosing a pre-configured system with Pentium M, and then removed the ATI graphics card and all of a sudden I saved SEK 2800, compared to buying the exact same system from the cheap Celeron link. What I get is:
So basically, I got the upgrade from Celeron M to Pentium M and the DVD burner for free. I also chose the higher resolution on the screen, to justify the large 15.4" size. I'm sure looking forward to get the computer! :)
Posted by djst at April 11, 2005 9:02 PMExcellent choice. You'll love the wide screen in 1680x1050. That's the one I have. 1280x800 is too big and 1900px width is too small.
I have one recommendation though: order as soon as you can a 60GB 7200rpm hard-disk, you will _really_ notice the difference. Of course, no need to order it from dell...
Speaking of batter life, don't dream. There's not a single laptop with 6 hours battery life on a single battery. Be happy with 3.
I have an 8600c (precursor to the 6000 I think) and also have that screen. It's really nice! I've just bought the 6000 for my wife :)
Thanks for the tip on the 7200 rpm drive Daniel - I'll look into getting a 100GB one if I can as 60GB isn't really big enough for me :)
Posted by: Rob... at April 11, 2005 10:28 PMThanks Daniel. Yes, 6 hours may be a bit optimistic, but I actually read about it on the Cnet review (http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_Inspiron_6000_for_Home/4505-3121_7-31259392-2.html?tag=top). They tested the 9 cell battery and it lasted for 5.5 hours, so it seems to be well above average at least. I also read a user review on NotebookReview, which got 3 hours with the 6 cell battery, so I can only assume the 9 cell battery will be better. :)
I don't think I will give the hard disk that high priority though. Right now I have to focus on affording this system, buying a wireless 802.11g router, paying our vacation, a digital camera and more. The solution here: selling my almost unused Peugeot 406. :)
Posted by: David Tenser at April 11, 2005 11:36 PMI second getting the faster HD.
I upgraded my thinkpad with a 7200RPM drive about a year and half ago. The difference was like a processor upgrade and RAM upgrade. It's a new system.
You don't realize it, but you don't utalize most of your CPU because of those clunky laptop HD's. They are to slow to really take advantage of your hardware. Until you move to 7200 RPM... your really only using a small piece of it.
Posted by: Robert Accettura at April 11, 2005 11:39 PMnice choice, the pentiumM is definitely superior to the Celeron option...
and considering your savings, it was really worth.
Posted by: rubens at April 12, 2005 1:10 AMDavid, after stumbling in to mozillas website and spotting your off-topic discussions about your personal computer purchasing amid the firefox/mozilla news, I have to say, on behalf of the rest of humanity, "WHO GIVES A SHIT!!!"
-We don't care about which Dell, what computer, what processor, how much or when you're going to get one.
So keep you little masturbatory rantings to yourself and save the rest of the world that doesn't need to stop random people in the street like a retard and start blathering about the latest dramas in their little pathetic life. Honestly, you sound like a dimwitted patient from a CBRF that just jumped out of the van at the Wal-Mart.
If you need to talk about your little Dell, www.dell.com has a special forum for people to talk about their hard-ons for their new 'puters.
Posted by: anonymous at April 12, 2005 3:49 PManonymous coward, no one forces you to read my personal blog. feel free to go away and deal with your own life instead of polluting my blog.
Posted by: David Tenser at April 12, 2005 5:14 PMWell,
angry anonymous fellow...
Sorry, actually David's description of the new laptop system was very helpful to me. I got a very similar system and it was good to compare our layout and affirm that I am not the only one on earth who thought that Dell's offering was a good investment.
Furthermore, what else is a blog for other than to log the experiences of it's author. Yes, it should be helpful to the users, but now we have determined that it *was* helpful to a user, namely me.
Please think your statements through before simply insulting people.
Posted by: Coopa Troopa at April 13, 2005 4:56 AMI had such a bad time with the cheap, plasticky Dell Latitude 840, its crappy components and the woeful Windows XP that after ten years as a PC user, I switched to Mac. That should say it all. I'm now working on a 17in Powerbook and will *never* go back to the Wintel World!
Posted by: spk at April 13, 2005 11:24 AMI recently bought a Dell 9200 -- I just *had* to get a 17" screen =) -- and am very happy w it. I get just over 3 hours of battery life out of mine. Can't remember if I have a 6- or 9-cell but either way you should get decent battery life since your screen is smaller, it should suck less juice.
(btw, I think I have a 5400 RPM drive and it's fine speed for me, I'm sure 7200 would be faster but if you never see the diff then 5400 doesn't seem as slow =)
