Laptops in Sweden are expensive. A Dell Inspiron 6000 costs $739 in the US, and the same system costs SEK 7237 in Sweden, which is $1048. That's a 42% price difference!
Posted by djst at March 4, 2005 1:10 AMThe VAT might not be added to the US price. Add that and some toll fees and you're probably sniffing around the prices we pay here in Sweden, unfortunately.

Posted by: sunilonln at March 4, 2005 7:29 AMDon't know what you're complaining about. It's 67% more expensive in the UK.
Posted by: Alex Bishop at March 4, 2005 9:05 AMI think both systems are NOT identical. The german website shows an offer which costs 749 EUR. But the default configuration includes a 3 year warranty with at-homne service. This increases the price to 1132 EUR. With the one year warranty it costs the 749 EUR.

I think "4 463 kr" is the danish price and not the swedish. Maybe they redirected your link (from germany) to the danish site. Sorry for the wrong information.
Posted by: Daniel de Wildt at March 4, 2005 10:14 AMMy current laptop is a Dell and it's rubbish, often have to hit the keys really hard to register, the fan has recently started sounding loud like it's about to die soon and it's always gotten extremely hot when running CPU intensive tasks.
I'd certainly look at a different make if possible. Shame the mac isn't suitable, personally having a familiar unix like backend removed the desire for me to have to install Linux on my Mac Mini so I doubt I will when I finally get a powerbook so I won't be able to comment on the Linux hardware compatibility on that platform.
However, would it not be possible to use a third party wi-fi card with the mac which would have Linux drivers? (does anyone know the answer to this).
Whatever brand of laptop you do buy make sure you check to see the hardware support, because you may find your wifi card not working in a PC laptop under Linux too. I had hell setting mine up initially.

Posted by: Abdulkadir Topal at March 4, 2005 3:24 PMDon't blame us for having an undervalued currency. Buy one from the US and have it shipped over. Incidentally, the company I work for has its global HQ in Sweden, and the currency exchange rate kills our profits from the US sector.
