So now it's possible to spam a blog using trackbacks too. I wish there was an easy way to close all comment and trackback abilities for old blog entries. Movable Type, please incorporate this!

Posted by: sebastian at September 29, 2004 3:03 PMThere are easy ways to control spam. MT-Blacklist and other plugins help keep spam at bay. Elise has a great tutorial on how to combat it http://www.elise.com/mt/archives/000246concerning_spam.php
Posted by: Arvind at September 29, 2004 3:30 PMI don't know of an easy way through movable type's interface, but it should be fairly trivial to directly to the database.
In the mt mysql database I am looking at right now you could tell it to set entry_allow_pings to NO for any entries in the mt_entry table with an entry_created_on before a certain date. Don't feel up to working out the SQL for this right now, but it shouldn't be too tough.
Posted by: UltraBob at September 29, 2004 3:45 PMUsed to get a lot of these a while back. They seem to have stopped though. Don't think it's a coincidence that I've switched to WordPress too.
Anyway, I think MT3 does have an option to automatic ally close comments after X days, or if my memory fails me, then it should be an MT plugin that you gotta install.
Posted by: Cheah Chu Yeow at September 29, 2004 4:04 PMI wrote a plugin for MT3 that automatically closes commenting on old entries in a way that is DBMS-agnostic:

I could probably add automatic trackback closing without too much trouble if anyone's interested.
Posted by: jacob at September 29, 2004 4:47 PMTry MT-Close2: (http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~cammy/sw/000480.shtml). It will close comments and trackbacks in MT using any type of database.
Posted by: Jeremiah at September 29, 2004 7:09 PMAbout 3 weeks ago, after extensive and cautious research, I finally felt that Firefox would be SAFE to try.
With Firefox 9.3, Noia 2 and all of the recommended extensions without glitch's and defiantly fun, I was ready for a NEW experience!
With all the extensions that I had selected, the placement seemed to take place easily.
Using Firefox provided me with more Enjoyment in doing absolutely anything! For 3 weeks I was in Bliss, and spent more time on the Internet than ever!
Then a few days ago I decided to download my favorite search buddy, Google, but in the form of the GoogleBar.
As soon as I clicked download I found myself looking at my desktop. There was NO Firefox...!?
Where did it go? I sought out and clicked on every place that I had the ability to click to open Firefox.
NOTHING worked!...?
I have a fairly workable knowledge of my computer, and my software, but after spending enough time to know that I had no available access to Firefox, I called...
I was greeted by someone with amazing knowledge of this problem. He was familiar with the incompatibility of the Googlebar.
The Good News was that the problem had been recognized, but the BAD News was that it had NO fix!
I KILLED FIREFOX!
I was informed that I would have to wait until the next release... in a few weeks!
I hope ya'll understand how this has made my Heart sigh, a lot... for I have in 3 weeks, found Firefox... personalized one for me... found the Internet more Enjoyable than I've ever known, and easier to find what I needed.
...and now it is GONE!
But, I will wait, and check with Ya'll once or twice a day... or more.
But after using Firefox it would be worthless and Dangerous to hook up IE6 again, except to check in with Ya'll.
Waiting Impatiently!

Posted by: Rohn at September 29, 2004 10:24 PMRohn: I don't really see how this is on-topic -_-;;. Anyways, forget the Google toolbar, it sucks anyway ;p (it's not like a 'regular' FF toolbar, last time I checked). There's a perfectly good Google search field in Firefox, and there is also an separate extension to show pageranks. And there should be one which highlights search results as well. Popups are blocked by Firefox itself. Did I miss anything?

Posted by: Laurens Holst at September 29, 2004 10:38 PMp.s., on a more on-topic note: A while back I was really getting a load of referrer-log spam on my website. It was quite horrible, as if my site was a sex portal -_-;; (and the most annoying thing was that I couldn't keep good track of real referrers). But now, it's all gone. I did code a blacklist for the log, so that I could easily remove the offending referrers and prevent them from coming back, but the strange thing is, now I haven't received referrer spam for months! So either that spam method stopped (perhaps it was uneffective, or Google patched up their system to make it so), or my filtering method is really really really effective. Personally, I doubt it's the latter, because back then they seemed very inventive coming up with new hostnames for the same page loads of times.

Posted by: Laurens Holst at September 29, 2004 10:44 PMMy appologies to ~Grauw, and to the group.
From various words at the top of this page, seeing Firefox and the "Comments" I thought this is the place where I could post my note...?
I will try to find the appropiate place to make that post.

The reason why the burning edge doesn't have most of these spam is because Jesse implemented some anti-spam measures. mozillaZine should do it too!
