Winstripe Reloaded

Lim Chee Aun has made some very nice attempts at making Winstripe look more native on Windows XP. He recreated vector versions of the Reload, Stop and Back icons and applied some styles to make them look more like the Luna interface. Very nice work, and at least worth a peek by the creators of Winstripe.

Being allowed to create derivative works like this is one of the benefits of a free icon set.

Without the right to create derivative works, you'd need to draw completely new artwork to see whether a particular idea would improve the theme. With the new theme, anyone can create improved versions, and the Winstripe authors can make use of those improvements in a similar fashion.

Those modifications looks great and, in particular, the 1 arrow reload icon. I just don't like the Luna like modifications because I don't want Firefox to look like IE.

It's really interesting seeing alternate interpretations of the same icon set. Some early prototypes of the Winstripe icon set had the back and forward buttons inside circles like Lim Chee Aun's, but I expressed a preference for the distinct shapes because it made each button look clearly different from each other, even peripherally.

Interesting, but for some reason I really dislike the 'arrow in a circle' approach. Lets hope to see some improvements in winstripe by 0.9 final!

Since there aren't comments on Lim Chee Aun's webblog, I'll reply here. Very interesting stuff. Nice work. I've taken this to the Visual Identity Team and we'll all have a close look at it.

Yay for open-source licenses!

It would be nice to have native SVG support in Firefox, so that we could use vector icons to start with!

Are the icons available in SVG, for leisurely tinkering purposes?
