Arvid has made a new application icon/logo for Mozilla Firebird:
Arvid's icon is so much better than the official one, and for several reasons:
Red suggests "aggression, hostility, heat, stop, error, warning, danger, error, fire, lushness and passion". Blue, on the other hand, "symbolizes calm, peaceful, water, sky, harmony, therapeutic, trust, confidence, cleanliness and loyalty". Gives people energy. Safe color to use in design.
Choosing red as the primary color in an application icon is just not a good idea. I installed AntiVir on a friend's computer the other day because of the Blast virus and one of the first things he reacted to was the lousy application icon they use! He immediately felt that there was something alerting and wrong with it. I'm having plans on making him switch to Mozilla Firebird soon, but I'll definitely replace the current icon.
Arvid's icon is actually descriptive enough to tell the user what the program is about. At the same time it's unique because of the wing resembling the letter "F" for Firebird. The current icon, however, reveals absolutely nothing of what Mozilla Firebird is. It could be anything from a firewall to CD burning software.
The current icon only uses two colors, if you count the black border out: two intensively saturated shades of red. Arvid's icon uses calm colors, conforming with the Windows XP icon guidelines. It also has the drop-shadow discussed in the same article.
The bottom line is simply that we should use Arvid's icon for Mozilla Firebird instead of the current one!
Update! Arvid posted his own comments about the icon in the Firebird General forum of MozillaZine.
Posted by djst at August 16, 2003 4:58 PMMozilla Firebird is going to be renamed "Mozilla Browser" when Firebird/Thunderbird/GRE replaces XPFE.
I hate to see people waste their time like this. Make Mozilla dino icons, not Firebird.
Posted by: netdragon at August 16, 2003 5:24 PMdjst has some good points, but i don't like arvid's new icon, either. it's the f. it looks stupid.
to what netdragon said - it's going to be a while before fb becomes moz, so it needs to be an attractive program now. we shouldn't wait until fb & moz mate before getting new users to use fb.
Posted by: tolremeno at August 16, 2003 5:45 PMNot a Firebird user (Moz 1.4), but I like the icon better than the old one. The "F" looks a little strange (I assume) because it's attempting to emulate a bird's wing.
Posted by: Marc at August 16, 2003 6:18 PMI dont like any icon that shows a big "F". Why do we have to copy the "e" style?
Anything with a bird instead of F would be much better.
Posted by: vfwlkr at August 16, 2003 10:39 PMim with netdragon on this one.
attempts should be made to reinforce Mozilla not firebird!
Posted by: at August 16, 2003 10:47 PMI like it very much.
I think other posts reflect the geeky nature most of the current fb users have ;-)
The icon looks more professional than current one, I definitively agree.
Posted by: DAf at August 16, 2003 11:02 PMWow, David. I never thought you are still sticking to your no-red-color-in-icons concept. Arvid's icon is pretty nice and even I myself is using it now, but.. in my opinion, an icon shouldn't have any letter(s) or alphabet(s) on it. 'F' might just mean anything. 'Fireworks'? 'Falcon'? Just my opinion...
Posted by: Lim Chee Aun at August 17, 2003 2:31 AMThe F doesn't belong, but the all red icon could be confusing. I don't like the red dino icons, it'd be nice to have the green lizard back again :)
Posted by: at August 17, 2003 3:50 AMI didn't even know people were fighting over this. I don't like either of the icons. Why shouldn't Firebird represent aggression? We're trying to take over the browser market. The "F" looks silly to me.
If anyone chooses to not use an application merely because they don't like the icon, they they don't realize that you can use whatever icon you want.
Posted by: alanjstr at August 17, 2003 4:27 AMI like the new icon, but i love more that blue one where u can find it on mac os x builds... it's 100 times better designed, more stylish than this one, this it's ok if we compare it with the flame red icon but seriously it seems to be an Internet Explorer Family icon...
No jokes.
Posted by: mini-d at August 17, 2003 2:14 PMUnfortunately, I don't like either one of the icons.
Posted by: John at August 17, 2003 4:40 PMActually, my favorite color is red, and has been for over 25 years. The walls of my house are painted red. My bed sheets are red. My backpack that I take back and forth with me to work is red. Hell, even my jacket is red. I live in a red world. :P
Firebird's red icon helps me remember what it is, and makes it more attractive to me.
Posted by: Jack Comics at August 17, 2003 5:30 PMArvid's icon is nice, but I have grown accostumed to the red fire (flames).
I agree with many, that the F doesn't look right.
Don't get me wrong, the globe looks great, and the 'F' looks great also, but something about the combination (or maybe the f's position) just don't ad up right
Arvid's new icon looks 'better polished', but...
It is sadly much too close to 'another Internet Explorer family icon'. And anyway, it's not worth fighting over something soon to be deprecated =)
Let's hope we (?) can find an effective icon for the future Mozilla Mail. No bird, no dino, mail&news.
I like that it scales on Windows XP better than the flame. I also think the picture of the globe in the icon is a good idea on helping people think that it is a web browser. Thunderbird has a piece of mail in its icon so should Firebird have some symbol to associate with the web.
Posted by: Seamus at August 18, 2003 2:59 PMAnything's better than the current Mozilla logos. Those are nasty.
Posted by: brooks at August 18, 2003 5:02 PMI'm not sure if I love the new icon, but the old red flame thing has to go. It might as well be a big red box. A new user would never expect that icon to lead to a web browser, at least the new icon has those hints included.
I liked the world in the icon (that is an icon for browser today), and the way that the F resembles a wing of a redish bird without being red :) (i agree that red is a dagerous color for an icon)
but well, i also think that it's nice to focus on mozilla and not firebird.. but what the crap, the guy did a good job -- althou i think it lacks some flames hehe. maybe in a background?
peace

Quite frankly, both icons are monumentally idiotic in both style and representation.
The newer one, though, does have a slight advantage over the ugly red one in that it uses more than three colors. Other than that, it sucks just as bad as the cheesy red one.
Either icon, however, is perfect well suited for firebird.
I don't like the current red Firebird icon. But I have to laugh when people try to push another icon using the argument "this new icon is descriptive." Please. Nobody looks at a globe and says "Oh! The Internet!"
Posted by: Blake at August 22, 2003 9:29 AMAs a logo for the word Firebird, it is very effective. It communicates the F, the idea of flames, and the concept of flight in one symbol. The impression of giving a wing to facilitate navigation is an appropriate comparison to a browser allowing you to travel through the internet.
Posted by: Luc at August 23, 2003 9:48 AMI like the new icon. The old one simply is not at all professional nor is it at all current. One more comment: some of you people are obnoxious as all get out. How in the world can an icon (ICON!) be "monumentally idiotic"?! Spend some time away from your computer and pick up some manners...and some taste and a pair of eyeglasses wouldn't hurt either.
Posted by: Axon at August 28, 2003 5:23 AMI just get an X is the top left hand corner of the window when I run Firebird...
Any icon would be an improvement, but I can't work it out....
I too think that the official icon is more appealing than Arvid's. For me, *Fire*bird needs to have some red in it and is suited well by the simple icon right now.
Posted by: h3h at September 9, 2003 6:51 PMI love the winged icon. We should either use that icon, or beef up the current icon to a high-color icon.
