"Change", right

Today I got a spam from the Obama transition website. I characterize it as spam, because it was clearly a mass mailing, and because I never requested them to mail me anything. I did provide an e-mail address when filling out their policy suggestion (required to send one in!), but there is no indication that this will be used for mass mailings (as opposed to followups to the suggestion in question). The privacy policy for the site is silent on this matter, but does distinguish "eligible individuals who affirmatively request to receive e-mail or other services from us" (which wasn't me).

We'll see whether they actually process my request to unsubscribe me, but I'm somewhat disappointed that there's actually an opt-out process involved here. I thought that sort of thing was limited to scum like phishers, nearly-bankrupt airlines, and wedding-registry-providing merchants (Michael C. Fina, I'm looking at you).

I can't say as this has harmed my opinion of Obama, of course, but that's because as one of his ex-constituents I didn't think all that much of him anyway. Here's hoping I'll be wrong in my low expectations long-term. Indications so far are not that promising.
