Can someone explain the dimension theory of commutative rings to me in a clear fashion, please?
Posted by bzbarsky at February 13, 2003 2:17 AMwell, I do know that it's the least upper bound of the heights of all the ring's prime ideals, but I haven't the foggiest idea what it's good for, so that probably won't help you.
Posted by: db48x on February 16, 2003 11:05 AMYeah.... I have the definition. It's computing it and working with it that I can't figure out...
Posted by: Boris on February 16, 2003 11:14 AMyea, it's about all I have too, and I had to look it up to be sure. I never had the benefit of a class on this stuff. I do recall seeing a computer program of some description that calculated it though. Maybe it was a mathmatica program or something. Has your book/prof told you what it's good for?
Posted by: db48x on February 16, 2003 11:22 AMNope. That's my biggest gripe with this class -- complete lack of motivation for the material...
