Firefox Roadmap Updates

I've just updated the Firefox Development Roadmap, revising and tightening up details about

the 1.0 launch and for the first time placing info about releases following 1.0 - a release off the trunk tentatively called "1.1" scheduled for sometime around March 2005. We don't have ambitious goals for this release aside from getting the branch landed on the trunk and ongoing HIG compliance work for Aqua/GNOME, as well as general bug fixing. After this point we will begin our 1.5/2.0 feature cycle, but at this point we don't quite know what that will entail so it's not officially scheduled.

Following the 1.0 release I'll be posting a postmortem of 1.0 development, project management etc here, so look for that in about a month's time.

Extension Version Rev

I have just rev'ed the app extensions version to 1.0. This means that all Preview Release extensions will break. You must update the maxVersion values in your install.rdf appropriately when you update your extensions and themes. Please read this document for instructions how, and how to update your listing in update.mozilla.org if you're listed there.

Project WOW Vlad

Another off topic post.

This is an effort to get Vlad into the World of Warcraft beta test. If you have a spare access key, and you appreciate Live Bookmarks in Firefox, are looking forward to Animating PNG and <canvas>, please send him email!

Release Schedule

I've just updated the Firefox Roadmap again - outlining what we think are roughly the release dates. They are, if you don't feel like clicking: 10/18 for RC1, 10/25 for an optional RC2 if needed, and 11/9 for final.

Now, for the rationale:

We would like not to slip off 11/9 if at all possible... (we had initially wanted 11/2, but the odds of getting decent press coverage during the US Presidential Election seemed slim).

So, we are going to aggressively manage and drive The List (see previous entry) towards zero, try and kick something out that more or less represents final on 10/18 and hope we're not too surprised.

The reason we do so so far before 11/9 is because Software is a game of surprises.

I understand that some among you may be upset that bug(s) you consider important are not on this list. All I can tell you is - bugs I would have liked to have fixed are not on this list either. We need to try and ship something this year. This really is "alternative browsers"' day in the sun - and we intend to make the most of it.

If you want to help this initiative, please consult The List and help with steps to reproduce/attach patches.
