Gloria II

Soon.

I said several years ago that my next system would be a Mac. That was before I had actually used my OS8.6 G3-450 machine at AOL and seen first hand how slow, unstable and crappy they were. For about a year in 2002 and 2003 I had the opportunity to use a G4-550 TiBook (courtesy of AOL) and despite being painfully slow (still), it was a jewel-like machine of exceptional quality. OS X had dramatically improved since the early days and there were now some applications on it that I could not do without (iTunes, OmniGraffle). Unfortunately the 7/15/03 hit and I immediately lost that system. Equipped with a stranded iPod I knew I had to get a new system. I contemplated a new or slightly used Quicksilver, a new or slightly used 12" Powerbook, but decided in the end to break the bank and order a Dual 2GHz G5 after using a 1.8 G5 at Fry's and discovering for the first time a Mac without significant UI sluggishness. I got the Dual so I could build more quickly (Mozilla builds on the TiBook took over 2 hours), and so that I could start addressing some of the issues that are plaguing MacFirebird.

I'm tentatively calling this new system, "Gloria," after my old G3-450, but that might change. ["Gloria" is Nissan's full size performance sedan, featuring a turbocharged 3.0 litre six cylinder engine, and is currently sold in the United States as the Infiniti M45]
