theora 1.1 crosses the finish line

w00t

Theora 1.1 has been released. This release includes huge updates to the encoder and some pretty solid updates to the decoder.

Read all about it over at the Mozilla Hacks blog.

Coolness.

I'm not sure how long this has been around, but I came across the Firefogg add-on (via http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/TheoraSoftwareEncoders) that converts local video files to ogg. I've had issues with VLC and MediaCoder but none so far with Firefogg. http://firefogg.org/
Media-convert.com is another good service, but sometimes you're placed in queue.

Still no Dirac support in FF. Too bad you don't just use Songbird's GStreamer code in FF...

Markus, there's currently no plan or interest from either the Dirac people or Mozilla to included Dirac in Firefox. Dirac isn't ready yet and even when it is, it isn't an ideal solution for the Web.

Theora is not an ideal solution for the Web neither.

Dirac is ready since quite some time (since the release of Schroedinger 1.0 actually). Dirac is very good for HD video. HD video is increasingly popular on the web. Theora is OK for low-res videos, but not for HD. By leaving out a HD codec you basically pave the way for AVC.

Just use Songbird's GStreamer code.

1.1 is a very big improvement.

Although I am not on the Mozilla ship (Opera Ship actually) I do love how you support Theora so much. Please keep it up. :)
