We just crossed the two days since release mark at about 8 million downloads. Not bad at all.

Ferdinand, people will be notified by Firefox about the availability of a "major update" in 4-8 weeks.

I thought major update was used immediately for this release.

Chris, a major update is _available_ should you go to Help -> Check for Updates. It's not automatically prompting users though. That's going to happen with Firefo 3.5.1 or 3.5.2.

Firefox 3 reached eight million downloads in just one day. And now it's one year later and there are millions more Firefox users than before, I thought Firefox 3.5 would reach ten million downloads in the first day.

maki seldt, last year Mozilla organized a huge campaign to get as many people as possible to all download on the same day. We encouraged people to stay up late and get up early, to ditch work and help others get Firefox, to organize installfests and all kinds of activities focused on one 24 hour period. We did that to set a record. 8 million downloads a day doesn't happen "organically" with a user base our size.
But fear not, I'm willing to bet $10 that we reach 90% of Firefox 3.0 users updated to Firefox 3.5 considerably faster than we did from 2.0 to 3.0. It's not all about the first day unless you're trying to set a world record. More important is the months after a release and how many new users we can attract and how quickly we can move 300 million users to the new version. One day is a drop in the bucket for these larger tasks and since we already set the record, we decided to put our efforts on longer term (weeks and months) goals rather than just one day.

Are non-automated (upgrades) included in the number, or just full downloads?
However you look at the numbers, they’re still impressive - especially since Apple had 11m in 3 days for automated updates, no?

John, this is only user discovered and user-initiated downloads. There are no automated or even prompted user downloads in this number.
If a user decides to visit http://getfirefox.com or decides to click on the Help->Check for Updates... menu in Firefox she will get the download. That's it. No prompting. No automatic downloading.

According to Statcounter, Firefox 3.5 now have about 3% from total of 30% user share belongs to Firefox. I guess most of the other 27% are not too familiar with the update and will upgrade only when they would be asked to.
Chrome 2.0 now has less user share than Firefox 3.5, as Firefox passed it two days ago.

Most people that knew that Firefox 3.5 was coming probably already ran one of the Beta's and RC's. They wouldn't download Firefox 3.5. And the people that don't know about a new version will be upgraded in about 6 months right?
