what mars couldn't
What Mars couldn't do to the amazing Mars Exploration Rovers and Mars Odyssey, the US government has done -- begin killing them off. What a shortsighted shame.
Apparently it's more important to waste money playing around on the Moon again than to actually learn something new about our solar system and the origins and histories of the terrestrial planets.
What a fucking shame.
reactions, thoughts, comments, etc.
My understanding is their operating capability has slowly eroded over time anyway, to the point where it won't be a lot longer until they're not really doing much useful anyway.
But that aside, it's such a shame that at the first economic sign of trouble the space industry is the first to be hit. Here in the U.K, we've lost access to some of the best telescopes, but the U.K government doesn't want to put the same level of money in to astronomy anymore.

I couldn't agree more. With so many homeless in this country, with the economy in a shambles and a possible depression staring us down, with unemployment on the rise and healthcare that is for the wealthy... we're going to whine that the Mars mission has been shelved. Man, you are really living in a dream world. I see so many who have nothing around us and it's wrong. There has to be a greater emphasis in this country in providing adequate healthcare to ALL its citizens and not just those at the top of the income ladder. As for space exploration, no need.

According to the article, the cost is $20 million per year. In US budget terms, that is ridiculously low. Why can't they keep this useful mission going and take what they need from the military budget? Then they'd be taking it from something that isn't useful: the war machine.

For those of you saying money should be spent differently, perhaps you should call for a movement of funds from the largest military in the world (the US spends more money on defense than all other countries in the world combined.)
Taking money away from science and exploration is shortsighted and stupid when there's an abundance of money (imagine, again, if our military spending was just ridiculous instead of criminal.)
This is a rich country and what it spends on science and space exploration is relatively so small as to be almost invisible.

I don't appreciate being called short-sighted and stupid because my priorities don't happen to align with your interests. Therefore, I will cease coming here and recommending it to my friends and acquaintances. No point in inflicting my views upon you and a few of your supporters, Asa.
